PS3 coming to Europe, Oz March 23

Sony sets date, price for console's European, Australasian debut; console will retail for 599 euros, AUD999.95, and have 30 games for "launch period."

Sony's PlayStation 3 finally has a release date for Europe and PAL territories. Originally meant to have a worldwide launch in November 2006, the PS3 saw its European launch delayed because of production issues with blue-laser diodes. Now, according to Sony, the PS3 will debut in Europe and Australasia on March 23.

The other PS3 detail up in the air was the console's final price in some of the regions. Sony is forgoing the dual-SKU approach it took in the US and Japan and only releasing the 60GB model--initially. As previously revealed at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2006, the console will retail for 599 euros (approximately $777) in Europe, but it will fetch GBP425 ($836) in the UK, AUD999.95 ($781) in Australia, and NZ1199.95 ($840) in New Zealand. To compare, the same model of the console retails for $599 in the US.

The 20GB model will be available later according to Sony but hasn't yet been priced. "Responding to retail and consumer demand, SCEE confirmed that initially only the 60GB model would be available, with the 20GB model to follow later in the year, depending on demand."

There will be 28 retail games available for the console's "launch period," as well as eight games for download on the PlayStation Network. Among the games are familiar titles from other regional launches (Resistance: Fall of Man, Ridge Racer 7, Call of Duty 3), as well as anticipated games yet to be released in the US (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Virtua Fighter 5, Def Jam: Icon). This doesn't necessarily mean that all games will be available on March 23--Sony does not define how long its "launch period" lasts. A full list of the launch lineup is below.

This announcement comes after uncertainty and speculation that the March date would be pushed back again, fueled by Sony CEO Howard Stringer himself, who told CNET that the "European launch in April...is very important to us." Both Sony Europe and America later issued statements reaffirming that the March date was still on, and that Stringer had simply made a mistake when he mentioned the April date. However, toward the end of January, there was still no firm date or pricing details.

The PlayStation 3 launched last year in Japan on November 11 and in the US on November 17. High demand and low supply left many who had camped out for the systems empty-handed in the US. As a result, the US launch was plagued by a series of crimes, including muggings, robberies, and shootings.

However, that may not be the case in Europe and Australasia because Sony promises 1 million units will be available for the launches in those regions. Sony only recently announced it had shipped 1 million units to both North America and Japan.

Well as of right now the Euro has a greater value then the US dollar. So Sony thinks that if the up the price of Europe's PS3 they will make up the money they lost in US and get a profit out of it too.

theruiner1 "Go back and read my first post. The only game I mentioned from that whole list you just posted was MGS4, and all I said was that it may end up on the 360 and it might, you never know. I was just messing around with that other guy for hist post. Which had nothing to do with the topic above.
By the way. I'm not mad at you and I do respect your opinion. The question is. Why are you mad? " I think it's because the xbox sucks.

GTA 4 w/ Exclusive content. ROFL.

As Sony PlayStation 3s and Nintendo Wiis are becoming basically impossible to grab before the holidays, parents are forced to rely on last year's Microsoft Xbox 360. But many previous consumers, including a teenager with a long list of signatures, are urging consumers to avoid the troublesome game console.

Darius Jahandarie, a 15-year-old from Storrs, Conn. has started an online petition to recall the Xbox 360. Microsoft has maintained that only three to five percent of 360s are failing. But after reading so many complaints and message board posts, Jahandarie concluded that that just wasn't true. So he started an online petition to Microsoft to recall the 360.

"After spending a decent amount of time on the official Microsoft Xbox forums, I saw hordes of these "3 Lights of Dead" threads in the Technical Support section," Jahandarie wrote in an e-mail. "I decided to do some investigation on the matter," he said. "I found that Microsoft could be making millions of dollars off of broken Xboxs. So, I decided that it was necessary to do something about it, and started a petition to recall the faulty Xboxs."

Jahandarie started the petition in August after one unnamed individual left this post on a message board:

There have been about 8 million Xbox 360 consoles sold. So, let us fantasize that the failure rate that Microsoft gave us is in fact true, at 3%. 3% of 8 million is 240,000 defective consoles. Let us say that half of these consoles have gone out of their warranty. Now, 120,000 defective consoles. Let us say that 75% of these people pay to get it fixed. 90,000 people with defect consoles paying Microsoft $129. $11,610,000 made strictly off of defective consoles using very low statistics in favor of Microsoft. When ConsumerAffairs.Com first found Jahandarie's petition about a month and a half ago, it had less than 100 signatures. As of this writing it has 557. ConsumerAffairs.Com has received about 370 complaints as of Dec. 5.

"Every month I get more signatures," he wrote.

But it's not enough. He plans to collect 5,000 before he officially sends the petition to Microsoft. He hopes media coverage will spur more frustrated 360 owners to sign.

By the way, Jahandarie owns an Xbox 360 and as of this writing, it has not failed. Microsoft's Public Relations company, Edelman, which unfailingly refers to itself as "powerful," did not return our calls and Jahandarie said they have not responded to him. Consumers with faulty Xboxs are urged to file a complaint with ConsumerAffairs.Com and to sign Jahandarie's petition.

    Talk about expensive.

And who was saying that the system is not expenive, raise your hands please so i can see them. 800 hundred us dollars, even though that converts into euros. Thats alot of booty. They really have to do something about that price. I'm sorry for the people who when out and bought it for such high price, for they are going to loose alot of money, when Sony decides to drop the price of it. I don't care how long it takes, they'll drop it, and even remodel it too. Ps2 anyone.

There is no way I am going to pay that price for a console, If I wanted a ps3 I would just import a jap one as It works on a uk computer lead as it handles 240v, and costs almost half the price, but the fact is that a 360 is better value and a better choice at the moment, maybe if the ps3 get some great games, but if developers go multi-platform than the ps3 is dead in the water.

chazzx21 "more expensive eh, so they are trying to sell LESS PS3's in Europe. What an interesting strategy."

They know that Europe is going to pay that thats why there doing it. Just don't buy it so they will be forced to slash the prices like there doing in some parts of Japan. Plus if they (sony) didn't leave it up to Japanese retailers to price the PS3 maybe they wouldn't have done such a thing?

How is Sony going to release PS3 in Europe, when they can't even meet their production quotas for the US? I would think that would be their priority just because retailers didn't even get to put them on their shelves and there are so few going around.

No way in hell am I gonna pay 6500kr for a console with 24 games. I loved the PS2, but this time I'm going to the Xbox360.

I cannot deny that PS3 might have a bright future. But it certantly does not have a good start. This console is absolutely terrible at this point. Haha!

I live in the UK, I already own a Wii and a 360, and am considering buying a HDTV in the near future (just as soon as I can get up the courage to cut off an arm and a legto pay for one) I saved hard to pay for those consoles as I enjoy gaming in my spare time, and I'm afraid I can honestly say I am not at all interested in the PS3 at the moment. It would have to be one HELL of a game that was exclusive for the PS3 to make me fork out half a grand, and none of the line-up even come close. Yes, it's a powerful machine that looks great, has top features and I am sure I will own one one day... but no time soon! Sony need to realise it is nearly all about the games for a system, and it's even more so in the UK where almost anyone who was interested in high-def gaming has bought a 360 already, so making us pay $237 more (£120) than the US for a late console that offers little that is different to the average consumer than the 360 smacks of over-confidence and arrogance. I'm not impressed.

The difference between your post and mine is that except for my opinion on The Getaway and my joke about MGS4, everything I said was fact. Your post sounded more like the desperate ramblings of a fanboy in denial. And no I don't see how my post is stupid, because in reality my post was meant to get a rise out of fanboys like you. Rip off - there is no justification for the mark up other than "we can get away with it". People are going to grit their teeth and buy it of course, but the media in the UK are not impressed and the negativity might deter casual gamers. One article mentions that current exchange rates put 599 dollars at 303 pounds and 60,000 yen at 250 pounds - exchange rates will fluctuate during the life of the machine of course, but > £400 is insanity. As for the launch lineup - some of these games will be in the bargain bin for the PC/X360 by the time they're launched on PS3.

Bioshock: Might come to PS3, but I don't care because it's only Single player. Forza: A good racer, but so is Gran Turismo and GT5 is on the way. GTA IV: I do believe that the PS3 version is getting downloadable content as well. VF5: Even though it's a timed exclusive, it's coming to the PS3 first. MGS4: No 360 version so stop trying. i think that seeing as u can get a wii AND a 360 for the price of one ps3 or just a 360 / wioi with a lot of extras (games, controllers etc) why would u bother paying for the ps3 when even if it is better on paper boasts the same games which are available across multiple platforms....and the fact u have to buy cables just to be able to run it at its best is a load of codswallop....if sony really wanted to deliver the best experience they would have a better pricing across the accessories and extras....im sorry but a high end pc or xbox 360 will do me just fine

I wouldn't advise importing your ps3 from America. One person I know of has imported one from Canada and had a problem with it. His warranty is void and Sony Europe will not fix it because it was purchased in Canada and it is not Sony Europe's responsibility to fix consoles not purcahsed in a PAL territory.

As for people complaining about the price, you are forgeting about the currency exchange rate. The American dollar is weak against the British Pound, therefore you get MORE dollars for LESS pounds. And naturally, things seem more expensive to Americans because of this exchange rate. SO we aren't necessarily being ripped-off, it's mainly to do with the currency exchange rate making it look more expensive than it is.

£425 is a resonable ammount for ALL that you get in a PS3 (yes, it sill is pricey). A blu-ray player costs about £1000 and you get one built into the PS3. So already you are saving. Not to mention that the ps3 is really a computer too. With the ability to run Linux, use homebrew, emulate WIndows XP, emulate games like Super Mario, Free online play for gaming with no subscriptions, and of course, the games that are on there way to it, such as:

    Metal Gear Solid 4
    GTA IV
    Resident Evil
    The Getaway 3
    Oblivion: Elder Scrolls
    Bio Shock
    F.E.A.R
    Resistance: Fall Of Man
    Virtua Fighter
    Call Of Duty 3
Gran Turismo (The HD version being FREE)
