Sega's Crush flattens PSPs

Puzzler for PlayStation Portable switches between full 3D and 2D with the press of a button; Kuju-developed game coming this summer.

Crush

It's 2D! It's 3D! It's really trippy! It's Crush!
Watch | Download

The move from 2D to 3D for platformers was a big step for gamers. However, the resurgence of retro games has proven that there's still enough room for both perspectives.

Now gamers can get the best of both worlds with Crush, a new PlayStation Portable game announced today by Sega. Currently in development at Kuju Brighton, the multidimensional puzzle game is expected to hit shelves this summer.

Gamers take the role of Dan, who is forced to undergo hypnosis for his insomnia. While under hypnosis, Dan must navigate a strange, dreamlike world to resolve his sleeping issues. Gamers will have the ability to "crush" the 3D world and flatten it into a 2D world, and vice versa, bringing distant platforms and objects together in the same plane. The effect of the game mechanic is to introduce puzzle-solving elements into the traditionally dexterity-driven platformer genre.

Crush has not yet been priced or rated.

Woah! At first I didn't get it, but half way through the video I realized what the game was about. Really cool concept, I hope it turns out to be a great game!

n2Deepeth "Wow, this looks like a really fun title to play. And I despise when people say a console is dead simply when it doesn't sell as many units as competitors. As long as the PSP's making profit, I would consider it to be far from dead."

Unfortunately, www.next-gen.biz has reported articles stating, that while the PSP hardware is selling well the software isn't. The ratio is absolutely horrid, and some of the top-selling PSP games in 2006 were released in 2005, with the #1 being GTA: Liberty City Stories. That's so embarassing.

I think I could pin it down to many of the PSP owners being tempted into either downloading illegal ROMs of the PSP games onto their memory sticks, and/or downloading from one of those PSP game & movie download sites with a one-off subscription fee (probably illegal). These sites have particularly been popularized by us gamers often noticing them in the google text ads here & in many other sites!

That is why I am so frustrated that Stubborn Sony is still refusing to provide or allow legal online download services for the PSP games to download onto your memory sticks.

The PSP isn't dead. It's actually selling pretty well here in England. I know more people who have PSPs than DSs.

the PSP is doing better in the US than in Japan but Sony keeps pouting all their money into the Japanese market and leaveing the US customers out on a limb. Hopefully this kind of game will do well in the US as it sounds like if they do it right it could be great fun.

Re HyperMetaDragon: Wow, you just stated how stupid you are. even if you were sarcastic, PSP is far from being dead. There was massive amounts of units prepared for boxing day and they were all sold-out. I got one of them.

Looks great, for about 5 mins. I hope they keep the puzzles really coming, and not just some sort of boring "oh look, just keep doing this same systematic thing over and over".

It seems more like a game like the DS should have, games like this sell much better on the DS. And the dual screen thing could be really handy for what Ive seen on the videos of this game, one screen could be a map, or hints etc.
The graphics don't look everly complex for the DS, but maybe this game needs a large data storage medium for quality music, and large levels (by the looks of things, mixing 3d and 2d like that can get pretty big).
But then, this might introduce large loading times, which is NOT good for puzzle games.

Which is why I think this should be on the ds aswell. If not just to show which console is better.

That is really cool. I love arcades and puzzles... I wonder if you can crush monsters from 3D to 2D and back...that would be cool too.

Wait, a new, unique, interesting concept. On a PSP. From SEGA.

If we're in a parallel universe, please don't take me back. The idea certainly has the "why didn't anybody think of that before" factor of Portal. Now to see if level design is up to par and we might have something on the line of Exit... but more fun to play.

An original IP from SEGA, and it looks great? Huh. Another PSP game to put on watch, but I'm still gonna hold off on buying the system until the inevitable version 2.0 is released.

This is the first game in a long time I looked at and went "wow". I doubt I would pick it up because I'm not into puzzlers, but I'm glad they're bringing innovative type games to the PSP. I hope it turns out great and does really well.

Very cool, these are the types of games we need to see more of on PSP, I could care less about ported PS2 shooters or action games. This is what the PSP was designed for, I can't wait to pick up this game.
