Godfather spawns new versions for PS3, Wii

The Don's Edition and Blackhand Edition of open-world gangster game to make use of new systems' motion-sensitive controllers.

Electronic Arts today released an update on its extended family of Godfather games, with the first details of the series' debut for the PlayStation 3 and the Wii. As with the other console versions of The Godfather, The Don's Edition on the PS3 and the Blackhand Edition on the Wii (both spotted on retailer Web sites yesterday) will cast players in the role of a soldier in the Corleone organization with ultimate designs on becoming the head of the family. However, both versions will bring something new to the table.

On the PS3, The Don's Edition of the game will take "full advantage" of the Sixaxis controller, though EA was vague as to the specifics. The Don's Edition will also include added gameplay in the form of "The Corleone Expansion Pack." As of press time, EA had not responded to requests for comment on exactly what the expansion pack contains, or if, when, and how it would be made available to owners of other versions of the game.

For Wii owners, the Blackhand Edition of the game will have elements of its gameplay redesigned around the system's controller. Players will use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in conjunction to beat down opposing thugs, or use weapons to pick off enemies from a distance by pointing directly at onscreen targets.

Extra features common to both systems include new contract hits, a pair of reworked rival-family compounds, and the ability to enlist larger hit squads when the need arises. The Don's Edition and the Blackhand Edition of The Godfather are both scheduled to ship in March.

Alright, let me just say this. This game looks like crap, graphics wise. Im a 360 guy, but im not one of those ignorant a$$holes that think the PS3 is pure sh!t. I know its good, but i know the 360 has better graphics. But about this game, im not comparing to the 360. Im comparing to the Wii, and last generation (xbox, ps2). The graphics on the Wii dont look that much worse than the screens of the PS3 version. Seriously, they really dont. And the screens of the PS3 version, seriously couldve been spawned on the last generation with xbox and ps2. Easily. Theres nothing next-gen about this game. Im dissappointed sony wud sink to this level with a system that has huge potential.

what? Godfather was a dope game and fun as hell. and it used the material well without changing it at all. and the ps2 version was tight. half of you are haters and just running off at the mouth about a game you've never even played. close-minded idiots who diss games and consoles they don't own and haven't played. therefore your opinion is irrelevant. just younger more confused versions of the politicians who critique games they've never played. but you think you're true gamers. that's the sad part. lol. what a joke. i'll be picking up the ps3 version cause the ps2 version was hot and with new features, families, missions etc i'm all in.

Sounds like a crappy pair of gimmicks in order to flog the game off on more consoles, if you ask me.

    Posted Jan 15, 2007 2:53 am PT

Talk about flogging a dead horses head. This game was pants, why does EA think everyone wants to play it? One day, EA will make a decent game, one day. Till then we can just carry on playing the Godfather and Superman Returns. For a developer with so much money it boggles my mind why they cant just make decent games. What happened to the old Electronic Arts games like Road Rash and the Strike series? EA are just whores now. I've seen prostitutes with more dignity than EA..

You guys know the Godfather game follows the movie pretty close. so everyone saying its a bad storyline insults the movie. Id say the aiming and general control is what makes this game suck not the story, although the story was short.

um, its one thing to try and port a game to one console, or two, but god damn enoughs enough. i can forgive porting to the 360 with bad graphics, or even the marketplace $*** they pulled, but this is outragious.

Can't they just bury the game in the desert.

The Godfather game should be left alone, it's a bad use of license in my opinion.

Agreed, but at least it's a somewhat good game. I just hope the expansion pack will be available for 360 too.

    Posted Jan 12, 2007 8:54 am PT

I can see the advantage of a Wii version, but the PS3 version is a waste of time. Judging from the MotoStorm demo the SixAxis motion control is crap and there is already a PS2 version that you can get cheap

  • theKSMM

    Posted Jan 12, 2007 8:37 am PT

Again, the playing field for gaming levels out somewhat. This is great news for Nintendo--the lack of good third-party titles killed the GameCube. It may be less good for Sony who may lose their stranglehold on good exclusive titles.

To Latinbro1: The motion sensing capabilities of the Sixaxis are nowhere near the level of the Wii remote. The Sixaxis only recognizes tilting and twisting motions (hence the name) while the Wii remote and its Nunchuck attachment can recognize those rotational movements plus a full range of translational movements (e.g. sliding through space).

So while the Sixaxis can tilt a plane or unscrew a bottle cap, the Wii remote can be used for taking a shot with a pool cue, stabbing someone, or playing tennis. It's a much broader range of sensation and movement.

How many said that and ultimately disappointed the fans, I wonder?
If they are gonna milk the series, at least do it properly. Motion-sensing is great, but that doesn`t mean to include just some small, unimportant commands.
A Godfather redesign for the PS3 and Wii with motion sensing (and hopefully better graphics for the PS3) sounds great overall, and I hope EA isn`t gonna do another one of their attempts to cash in by releasing a bad port.

Interesting, but like the poor Far Cry conversion for Wii, I can only see these being sub-par games. I mean, the Godfather game wasn't particually good anyway. I wonder if the PS3 version will boast 'next gen' graphics? I doubt it.
