Dead Rising hits milestone, exec hints at sequel(s)

Capcom ships 1 million copies of its zombie-slaying action game worldwide; company exec says series can be used "for years to come."

Like the undead meatbags that mysteriously take over the town of Willamette in Capcom's action-oriented survival horror game, Dead Rising has swarmed stores across the globe. Capcom today revealed that it shipped more than 1 million copies of the game worldwide through 2006.

The Xbox 360-exclusive title, which won GameSpot's Best Action Adventure Game award for 2006, was released in August in North America and took just two weeks to ship 500,000 units. In breaking 1 million copies shipped, Dead Rising became Capcom's 41st game to eclipse the 1 million mark, claims the company.

The success of the game may be enough for Capcom to roll out a sequel or two. Mark Beaumont, executive vice president of Capcom, hinted that the dead may rise again. "Bringing out Dead Rising has allowed us to establish a new franchise that we can use for years to come," he told GamesIndustry.biz.

When asked about the possibility of a sequel, representatives from Capcom told GameSpot, "We have not made any announcements on another title."

For more information on the game, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

This game is so sweet it did get repedative after a while but still an awsome exciting game to play. I Love the story line. I think the zombies outbreak should manifest in a theme park or in the middle of new york somewhere that has plenty to explore. two finger crossed that there will be a sequel that lives up to the first with little improvements where needed.

I would love it if they came out with a new dead rising release. A multi-player feature would make it interesting.

Huzzah!! I heard this ages ago but i thought it was a rumor, A sequel would be great, i just hope they add an OFFLINE multiplayer,, say,, split screen or System Link.
    And no time limit
The ablity to use more items. i.e use hammer and nails to build a Barricade, only to realise your on the wrong side. Or build up a garden shed with Wheels with Slots on the side for Chainsaws, and u can paint anything, paint your shed or make an A-team van
Byt more than anything.....it needs a Co-op option, if one person dies, they wake up in a safehouse(AKA security room)

This game is sooo sweet. But if i had any thing to do with making it heres what i would fix. 1.) guns can be reloded (get more ammo instead of a new gun)

2.) More variety of fire arms

3.) can swith to First Person if you want

4.) at night zombies will run after you but there just a litttle bit slower then you

5.) NO OTIS or at least make it so you can jump and shoot while he's telling you someting stupid that you already know.

6.) Head to head or co-op multiplayer without the need of xbox live or system link.

I concur, the aiming should be improved along with survivors being smarter. The ability to crouch would also be helpful, Cletus would be an easier, and less frusterating battle.

"Dead Rising is one of the best games I've ever played. It deserves a sequel but I just pray Capcom doesn't turn this into another Onimusha or Devil May Cry or (God forbid) Resident Evil... all those series started on such great notes and then gave way to at least one horrible spin off or sequel. As long as we don't see Dead Rising: Dead Aim or Dead Rising Outbreak I'll be happy."

You're not suggesting that Resident Evil 4 was a terrible sequel, are you? If you are, you're sadly mistaken.

I'd say that the best thing that they could change if they did end up making a sequel would be to make the gun controls better. Like for example, pulling the L-trigger to go into FPS so that you can use the left analog to move and right analog to aim with the right trigger to fire. when you let go of the left analog though, you could still use the right analog to go into camera mode and attack with x button still. They could even make you lose accuracy if you moved while in FPS, like splinter cell, but at least you could get yourself in better firing positions. The current system gets me frustrated.

It would be nice to see a bigger area to explore(The mall was big but they should go bigger), online multiplayer(Co-op zombie killing need I say more?), more stores(goes with out saying), and more weapons(No tennis racket?).
Here's hoping DR2 includes all this and more!

i waited for ages for dead rising, but it got so repetitive so fast adn after youve spent the time getting the zombie genocider achievement you just get sick of it, it needed way more variety, possibly like a 4 player co-op mode or somethi' over live.
heres hoping a sequel is set in a giant area, alan wake style.

If they can make it an even BIGGER place to explore, that would be awesome. The mall was nice, but I'd kill for a full Grand Theft Auto size city with cars you can steal and run zombies over with...

Seriously Dead Rising on a GTA scale would be epic.

I played that game to death when it shipped last August... and man I can't wait for another sequel. I wonder what setting they're going to use this time, the mall set-up was rich, and it had a little bit of everything.

I'd love to see maybe one of these setups for the next Dead Rising. Maybe you guys have also have good ideas.

    A) Being trapped in a small suburban town being overrun with zombies.
    B) Traversing through an infested city, underground subways, buildings, hospitals, police stations
    C) Trapped in an underground army base a la Day of the Dead.

Anyone think they'll have you as Frank West taking pictures again following the storyline, or perhaps maybe Capcom will introduce another Character with another set of features?

    Any ideas on cool characters?

Hopefully they actually get the game good enough so that I will play it next time around. I mean sure I OWN it but that doesn't meant I play it. I don't like the idea of every time I get a hankering for some zombie slaying knowing that I am going to want to kill the janitor more than anything else in the game. The biggest challenge of dead rising....Trying to read the text.

With Dead Rising and SFII doing so great on the x360, it's practically a given that Devil May Cry 4 will head to the x360.

Capcom knows that x360 gamers will buy a good product.

Capcom's 41st game to eclipse the 1 million mark... DAAAAMMMMNNNN!!! thats rank!
Seriously, with what they learned in making DR, it shows in a big way in Lost Planet, and that game is taking the leap into online mixing which is a wild place to be with a game from Capcom.
If they were to be brave enough for a sequel, the best possible thing I could see working is redo Resident Evil Outbreak... tell me that wouldn't rock yer socks on the 360!!
