Minor 360 dash update today

New dashboard update for Xbox 360 released today; Microsoft says it isn't major, "just addresses a few performance and stability issues."

Xbox 360 owners with Internet-connected consoles have been awaiting dashboard updates to their consoles with anticipation (and sometimes, trepidation). Microsoft has promised two major updates a year, each one adding new features to the hardware such as video downloads or webcam support.

Another update was released today, but those expecting new features will be disappointed.

The next time gamers launch an Xbox Live-connected Xbox 360, an autoupdate will be downloaded to the system. However, Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb (also known as Major Nelson), says on his blog, "There is nothing major in this one, it just addresses a few performance and stability issues."

The next major Xbox 360 dashboard update is expected this spring.

Firmware updates are one of the most compelling features of this new console generation. It's exciting to see what new capabilities your system will acquire each month.

I noticed that the update fixed my wireless headset!! Wahoo!! Now I can walk around my house and talk on it and if I go out of range it easily reconnects by walking back in range.

To those who have Xbox media connect setup with their PC and did the update:
does it mess up your network settings (reset) it? I don't wanna have to redo it again cos it's a pain.

It is dude. I just got sick of all the people coming over to all the PS3 news and posts bashing it, so I figured I'd return the favor.

I feel bad for all the people who's 360 bricked on this update. My friend is still pi$$ed at MS for the disc read error on his GoW. Bottom line - everyone will have problems, don't just bash one system because.

I noticed the performance improvements str8 away.

Hopefully the "stability" issues are the occasion where one access their gamercard via the guide button, where on occasion the 360 would crash.

TEKKEN 6 COMING TO THE 360 I just read this article guys!!!! hahahah PS3 SUCKS!!!!

    http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/02/rumor-tekken-6-on-xbox-360/

Stirred by Sega's announcement of an Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5, comes rumor that Tekken 6 is also bound for Microsoft's console. The source of the rumor is the same anonymous "IGN insider" who has been apparently credited with breaking the Virtua Fighter 5 news before Sega confirmed it. If his latest spill proves valid, expect Namco Bandai's next Tekken on 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year. There is no indication that this multiplatform initiative would extend to the recently released downloadable version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which looks to remain a PS3 exclusive.

While console versions of the Tekken series have traditionally be reserved for Sony platforms, Tekken 3 was eventually released for Dreamcast Tekken 3 was emulated on Dreamcast; and Tekken Advance was specifically designed and released for Game Boy Advance. If Tekken 6 does land on Xbox 360, the move is not unprecedented.

I'm liking this dashboard thing more and more with each update. It's seems like the major updates are going to become pretty regular, which is cool, because something better is added each time.

What the F*** is everyone complaining about? I'm glad it updated itself - everything uses firmware updates.... PSP, Modems, PS3, 360, Cell phones....... so what the f*** is everyone talking about? Sony fanboys are here saying MS charge people $$$. They don't realize someone like myself streams all video content, shows, HD movies, pictures, music, and soon XNA games wirelessy or directly on a local network on demand from my PC, which has a 250 Gb hard drive for what ever I want, directly to my Xbox360.... HOWEVER, MS fanboys are claiming unreliability or instability for SONY, when obviously they are not going to fail. ****, I love and own a PSP (MGSO) and I'm interested in the PS3 to go down in price so I can get my SOCOM Next-Gen on, but in all honesty my 360 will still be KING of the living room - c'mon, you I can watch and listen to EVERYTHING on your PC through my big HDTV and Stereo and still accept game invites and play instantly....

i think this update killed my 360. i just turned it on after being away for a week, then it asked me to update, but when it restarted the screen went blank and 3 red lights appeared. i almost made it a year without any problems, march would have been my anniversary, but its dead. oh, well, i guess i gotta make a few calls now.

But again enough about the PS3 or Wii. BTW.. just got the PS3 and it made me sick. I started playing my 360 even more after. Nice job with the update!

I think a lot of the sony fan base is having a hard time with the 360 doing so well, and most of the ps3 exclusives gone. I think they are also having problems with their ps3. I have heard they have major backwards compatability problems. I have heard if your tv doesn't support a hative 720p it downsclaes the image to 480p.

I don't know where you sony fanboys get off saying the 360 scales the image up. Please show me some proof of this. I have read from quite a few places saying the 360 is leaps and bounds above ps3 gpu. I even read it is directx 10 compliant where as the ps3 isn't. You have to do it with software. Anyhow I am glad microsoft is updated their systems. I find it great.

"YourDaddy88 - We don't complain about the MS updates because A) the first two updates added lots of cool functionality"

Most if not all of the Sony updates also added some sort of functionality, yet people labeled them - and still do - as patches to fix errors.

"and B) The 360 is not fundamentally broken the way the PS3 is."

Broken how exactly? Last I checked, the 360 still freezes, crashes, overheats and has disc read errors. I've only seen a couple of PS3s overheat (mainly store demos) and freeze (mainly game demos).

"And HDMI only pleases people with 50+ inch TVs, because no one else gives a damn about 1080p."

That explains why people praise the scaler chip in the 360 and bash the PS3 for not having one.

actually I dont know why everyone is trying to dis the updates. its great that microsoft is continuing support on thier system to make it better. and they're the first. let me ask every true gamer....do you remember how many updates the ninendo, ps1, ps2,and orginal xbox had? thats right. NONE. no one ever seems to be satisfied. at first the only way to get anything updated was to buy a whole new system, and now they update the one you have and you still wanna cry about it? microsoft really came through for console gamers. and these ps3 fanboys..please. sony had to bite microsoft and on top of that the games are horrific (well cept for resistance, I heard that was okay, not gears of war, but okay) and microsoft came up with the online download for movies and games from the console. dude..if it werent for microsoft our systems and the ps3 would never get updates or good online services on the console. and people say oh it shoulda had this and that out the box..well no system is perfect out the box, thats what the updates help...and if the ps3 is so great out the box, why does it have updates as well. my point stop complaining. microsoft really came through with the update supports be thankful not ungrateful. updates are great and microsoft did great to introdce it.

i still say they should update the 360 to have internet explorer in it... i mean, the wii, the ps3... for goodness sake, even the psp has an internet browser... but if 360 had internet explorer 7, they would definately be the winners in that category

vanhelendlrband, I agree with you all the way. Both companies treat gamers as if they are rich and will do anything to play their games. But of lately I'm really mad at what Sony is doing.

  • vanhalendlrband

    Posted Jan 9, 2007 7:16 pm GMT

henry_the_horse, in some cases i agree with you and some cases i don't.

In the case of Windows, i don't agree with you, as i had Windows 98 SE for years with support from MS. On the other hand Windows Vista and its 6 packages are a joke and a half. I'm not impressed. Considering how they ripped people off with Windows ME when they upgraded from 98, and were forced to buy the full version from windows 95. So you get 95, 98, 2000, and XP (2002). Yea i agree with you from that point. Vista probably is about as useless as any other windows. And what have these new windows actually brought us anyways?

I own an XBOX and a 360 with a Windows PC. I do have to say XP kicks some serious ass, but i'm left wondering whether Vista is just another minor upgrade or not, Windows AERO or not. Just seems pretty weak too me, espescially when the company is in no danger whatsoever. XBOX Live Gold should be free as well, considering Hotmail has been free with a gig of space. How is it XBOX Live needs to be payed for? It just doesn't make any sense. Espescially when you have to pay for an MMORPG on top of it. STUPID.

I do like MS products, but the way they handle their customers is a joke, but MS is not alone in this. Sony treats their customers the same, as i bought a PS2 the day it came out and it went kaput within 100 days, 10 days after the joke of a 90 day warranty. 90 day warranties should be illegal. Nobody pays 500 dollars every three months, i'm sorry, but thats basically what they're implying. If their systems are THAT good where you pay 600 bucks for it or more, then they should warranty it for how long the system SHOULD last for which is at least 5 years. HELL my Saturn still works, why can't my XBOX or PS2 still work, or my original PlayStation? Pretty sad for multi-billion dollar rich guys to keep making the poor guy fork over the cash. REALLY SAD.

  • AgileNate

    Posted Jan 9, 2007 7:14 pm GMT

Tryme01, its not that it was broken they are just making it better. What doesn't get updated? Your complaining about the system's updates when you dont even know why. The 360's support is awesome and I am glad I didnt wait to get this system. Feel bad for the people that would rather bash it instead of enjoying it.

  • SpruceCaboose

Zephry is as of now vaporware, and its just a system reconfig anyway. Think NES, they had one after the SNES. Sony - They re configed both the PSOne and PS2.

Original Xbox... backed no more than 4 years by Microsoft.
Xbox 360... backed 1 year and counting by Microsoft.
Zephyr... projected to be backed for 2 months before Microsoft replaces.

Must be great how Microsoft treats you guys. The Xbox brand name is as disposable as an old mans Depends. Same goes for its supporters as far as Microsoft is concerned.

you know what??? when i firts hooked up my ps3 to the internet it required an emediate update! it took 4 ever. close to the 10 min rage maybe even more. the 360 has gotten alot of updates, but that just means they are fixing things, i havent had any problems with my 360, or my ps3 but that update on the ps3 took too long, compared with the 360 updates. what do you prefer fix the problem right away with quick updates, or wait till the problems pille on then release an update that takes 15 min? you chose!! i own all 3 systems, ps3, wii,360. keep those updates coming!!!!
