Sony shares rise 6 percent

PlayStation 3 maker given boost with announcement that US targets were met, reports Bloomberg.

2006 was a tumultuous year for Sony. Delays hit its US and Japanese launch dates for the PlayStation 3, and there are still a couple of months before it hits Europe, with no specific date yet disclosed. On top of that, a series of thefts and violent incidents marred the US PS3 launch, and the company has been taken to task by mainstream media outlets like Time and The New York Times.

In spite of that, the company is off to a good start financially in 2007. Sony shares closed today at 5,550 yen (approx $46), a 6.5 percent jump, which was the company's single largest gain in more than a year. Leading investment bank Goldman Sachs added the company's stocks to its "buy" list, and Tokyo-based analyst Yuji Fujimori raised the 12-month share-price estimate to 6,200 yen ($52) from 5,150 yen ($43), reports Bloomberg.

However, gaming wasn't the primary reason for the Goldman Sachs upgrade. The bank increased its rating on the stock from "neutral" to "buy" on the basis of the electronic giant's TV sales over the holiday period, and its cheap valuation.

The company recently announced that it had met its goal of delivering 1 million PS3 units to the US last year, after supply-constrained launches of only 400,000 units in the US and 100,000 in Japan.

BUT still, you'd have to be a really desperate fanboy to say stuff like:'lmao u wish sony is lying, bravias own' or 'You can go yapping about anything you want but to me 1+1 will always = 2 same to the equation Sony=Quality.Period.' or 'Sony will win this gen in the end,it's enevitable becasue of their name' I really feel for you guys, it really makes me wonder what kind of person is on the other side of the screen.=)"

Personally I think it's Ken Kuturagi and Kaz Hirai posting all the pro Sony stuff on here. They just took out a bunch of GS memberships. That would also explain the horrid spelling and grammar on these sonyboy posts.

I'm almost suprised they made it to 1 million... almost. After starting production, it gets easier as they make more. If they can keep them coming, and come out with more (better) games, they'll have a chance again. Just about everyone (besides the diehard fans) thought Sony was messing up their lead with this system, but it seems they have room for redemption.

bghattas. Its generally not a good idea to moan about people moaning. It only entices more moaning of which the latter seems to be dispised by the very person who begins with the moaning against the moanee!

    Anyways...

Easy ways to spot fanboys (dang, fanboy now is the new emo...) is when there is a topic about 1080p. I have a wonderful TV in the flat I am staying in at the moment. Its an LG, I bought it specifically for my stay here. It can only scale up to 1080i.

To a fanboy, 1080i vs 1080p is something worth writing pages and pages of abuse for. Its crazy.
HECK, I remember the days when I scorned console manufacturers because of the lead they supplied didnt fit my TV! (my saturn came with a scart, my tv didnt have scart!). Now, we are spoilt for choice!

Also, remember the days when you had to buy speclai adaptors to have sound going into a hifi!
Because of DVD's scarts are now a thing of the norm. Scart is a wonderful device for us UK gamers, however there are usually only 2 ports on a TV! This means those awful scart boxes..
But then, a revolution! In a wonderful red white and yellow! In they come! Its composite connections!
Now tvs have a setup compartment specifically for games consoles! Nice. And the red and white can go right into a hifi or amp... sweet.

Today, people talk about 1080p vs 1080i like its some massive difference. I am mildly short sighted, to apreciate such clarity only really matters if you are playing a game on a super sharp quality, expensive PC monitor.
Alot of plasma screens below £2000 have, what is known as, colour blending. This reduces the sharpness of the image.

You need some screen engine greater than Sony's Bravia to produce ultra sharp colour projection.
What Im saying is - Arguing over nothing! Its pointless! Gamespot print news, if they print ps3 news, which is either positive or negative. Its no big deal, ignore it, dont reply to it. The fact that you write in hear says that you are interested.

You want GS to stop posting Sony news? You will see that the negative Sony news ranks up user comments into the thousand. They print what we seem to want to read!
You want the government to ban smoking indefinately? Then you have to stop the entire nation from smoking!... sheesh...

At the end of the day... fanboy this, 1080p that... no matter what news brings (for example, 360 having 1080p) there will always be someone there to say "ah, but its through component..."... this is the part where everyone slaps their own foreheads with shame of another long and pointless argument.

Lets look at the facts of this news - Sony gains some plus points! WOW! Everyone should be happy, right? I mean, most of you have been saying things like "at last, GS printed some Positive Sony news!". But basically, Sony are gambling away alot of things this time, of course it's going to cause a bit of a stir, a loss of profit.

Mark my words, when PS3 goes worldwide, can you imagine the net loss sony wil incur? The advertising, the packaging, the shipping, the security, the insurance, the theft, the demand, the taxes, the translation costs... all of this stuff has to be paid for.
All Sony will get for the next year or so is bad news, Microsoft had bad news, too. All Nintendo had when it named their new console "wii" was bad news...

The most important thing here, is that the company has the gumption to follow through.

At the moment, the Sony Computer division has caused a stir, and also with the shock of their media forcing antics onto their gaming section. This, reduces gumption to follow through.

ALSO, did anyone ever sit and realise what news is? news is negative! Everyone loves to see humpdy dumpdy fall off the wall, its just the notion of the actual fall and the whole "putting back together again" that makes a good read. You take that out of the picture and you just have a boring egg... existing, with an army which has nothing to do.

But isn't it a free world? If people like to voice their opinion -even though the said opinion was voiced by a person with tunnelvision(ie fanboy)- is still an opinion and thus they may freely expres it as long as they don't hurt anyone with said opinion. It just makes me wonder what kind of persons say these kind of things.
At first you just seem to be a Sony fanboy, but with a statement like:'Ignore Pencilpusher69. He lives in a little dream world with unrealistic ideals and pastel colors. I'm not afraid to say this: I despise him.' You seem to be more then a Sony fanboy and I don't mean that in a positive way.

But then you say:'Sad that some gamers seem to put console/company bashing on the 'Net ahead of the actual PLAYING of the console themselves.' Which makes you a more reasonable person. ^^

I second that opinion btw, there is a console wars thread and should be used accordingly. BUT as they say:'All is fair in love and war.'
Oh well, some people have fun playing games, some people have fun flaming and I happen to love watching fanboys flaming each other. =)

Angelserval, perhaps GameSpot should not allow people to post opinions in threads that might incite console wars because it seems that every time GS puts a positive story about Sony, people then come in and try to start a console war.

It's sad that some gamers seem to put console/company bashing on the 'Net ahead of the actual PLAYING of the console themselves. I play my PS2/Xbox 360 way more than I do bashing Nintendo on the 'Net.

BTW, God knows what comments these fools would have if you were allowed to chime in on Greg Kasavin's departure.

    OMG!

Look at the the Sony fanboys scrambling for this bit of good news. ^-^
And indeed it IS good news, Bravia finally became a viable purchase option in the medium range HDTV segment. Their stock is up 6%, not bad at all.

BUT still, you'd have to be a really desperate fanboy to say stuff like:'lmao u wish sony is lying, bravias own' or 'You can go yapping about anything you want but to me 1+1 will always = 2 same to the equation Sony=Quality.Period.' or 'Sony will win this gen in the end,it's enevitable becasue of their name' I really feel for you guys, it really makes me wonder what kind of person is on the other side of the screen.=)

There are even some nice people here. Like Blackace with a funny metaphor. Grimbee with his practical, observant views. Now before I get axed by some Sony fanboy. Sony as a whole performed well, does not equal PS3's performance was good too. And if you DO believe that misconception, then the Gamecube was also doing great and the XBOX would've done even better. Oh well, let's hope for the best. ^^

BTW, despite the alleged "killer apps" on each console, why do Nintendo fanboy and MS fanboy seem to spend more time whining, crying, complaining and trolling on the 'Net than actually playing their consoles? At least Sony fanboys, PC gamers and multi-consolers PLAY their games. The rest just annoy people with their phony alliances and BS propaganda.

Perhaps it's because you all know that when it is all over, Sony will win this generation, too, because they know what they're doing. I also think the Wii will fade when people realize it's a novelty. Personally, I think it's a POS that no real gamer would play. Real gamers play PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The Wii is for non-gamers and people who don't know any better.

Stop trolling and play your consoles. You're not wanted here.

Sony stocks FALL, thanks to disappointing sales.

"News of a possible shortfall in Japan helped send Sony shares plummeting as much as 2.7 percent Wednesday on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The stock ended 1.8 percent lower at 5,450 yen ($45.79) amid an overall decline in the market.

Eating into Sony's sales at home was the unexpected success of Nintendo's Wii gaming system, according to Enterbrain. Nintendo sold 989,118 Wiis domestically from its Dec. 2 launch date to month's end, nearly double Sony's total.

In contrast to the PS3's focus on super-realistic graphics and high speed action, Nintendo's Wii turned to a revolutionary motion-sensitive wand controller hoping to lure a wider crowd of players - not just young men."

Sony met their goal after changing their original goal from 2 million to 1 million. It's a shame that they didn't meet their launch goal however. Still, it's good to see their HDTV division do well during the holidays. I, myself, have a Sony WEGA LCD HDTV. So far it has worked great. I have 3 Sony T.V. and never had any problems with any of them. What's even cooler is all their remotes work with each T.V. too. Even though I'm not fond of Sony's management, I do appreciate some of their quality electronics.

I think Sony have tried too hard to be an all-in-wonder company, instead of slowly but surely taking over each section at a time.

For example - The reason why Nintendo are ahead of their game right now is because all they have to concentrate on is games, their name.. and GAMES.
Microsoft has apple to contend with, with windows. So far they are still winning. But you see, Apple then began to take a different route. Get people to buy stuff, THEN get them to use their software.
With the IPOD, and now the Iphone (looks awesome, by the way) slowly but surely securing a good product down, then moving slowly onwards with things. You have to earn a name, to flaunt it.

Microsoft, however, after dominating with their own software (word, office, internet explorer, windows.. etc, etc, etc) and the fourthcoming vista, they chose to take away the mistakes with the xbox, and slowly piece together their plan of the 360. And by heck it seems to be working (it made me get one anyways!)

The wicked thing is - I can stick in my wifes ipod, it shows up on my 360, and I play music as I game. I press the guide button to cycle tracks, or see whats on the entire ipod! Playing gears of war to megadeth is superb let me tell you

The ps3 doesnt have this kind of connectivity, dont think it will anytime soon... why? Because Sony's problem is that they think everything should be sony. Want a camera? You need Sony video tapes, Sony memorysticks.. no matter how much the consumer complains that its too expensive, and "all the other cameras have SD..".

Same thing with the PSP, I guarantee that if Sony took away the UMD drive, and had games run from a memory slot (which could have a variety of cards set in, SD, compact flash, etc) it would boost up the video space, games will need much less battery (no disc loads) and if Sony did an apple (as in, supplied great file managment software for converting music etc, but for videos) then all you would need to do is insert a dvd into your pc, and the sony software should convert it to a file of your choice size and compression.

But Sony are intent on covering every single base. As with the Ps3. What if the future wants hddvd? Sony doesnt care, because everything has to be Sony. Which is why I am totally angry with Sony this time around. When they make a universal product (i.e a TV, or dvd player) they are great. But as soon as they started meddling with their own media formats and pushing people to have sony EVERYTHING, it started to suck. Not for Sony, but mostly for the end user. I totally loved Sony products (especially walkmans) and in the industry that I am in, Sony cameras for movies (etc) are absolutely great. Sony monitors, sony tape decks.. etc.
But whats it all edited on? A mac with final cut pro 5, or Avid. Nothing sony there...

Instead of covering one base at a time (take a look at the ps1, it was a games machine, thats all it did) which I think sony should of done, they have turned to offering people only turns which Sony can provide.

This is why I am happy with the 360, at the moment anyways. Its very easy to use, nice on the eye games are the same price as Wii games. And if I want to I can upgrade it when I please.
The wii, out of the box, plays games. Does what its meant to do.

Sony's problem right now is that it is covering too many bases. Letting others with their focus firmly on only ONE base, use all their force to slowly take over the ground Sony has laid over the last few years with the ps1 and ps2.
If I was Sony, I would just take a few steps back and see what other people are doing, I think they are trying too hard to introduce too many new things for their portfolio and are trying too hard to capitalize their losses on other things like DRM, media formats and other things.

For a console, you need to concentrate on these things - Price of the console, functionality and choice of games.
Out of the box, the ps2 played dvds as described, played games. Easy.
    The wii plays games.. easy.
The 360 plays games, no fuss there. And you can do a bunch of other cool things too, like watch stuff from your pc hard drive, listen to tracks via an ipod, or even tracks right from your pc whilst you game.

The ps3 advertises things like "hd movie playback" but if HDDVD wins out, its going to get complicated. Likewise with the whole ps1 - psp games. Why would you need a ps3 to do this?
Sony concentrating on too many things like trying to make the ps3 sell more to get ps1 on psp, its ruining the psp...

Strange strategy. maybe the gamble will pay off if bluray wins out, its all pretty much riding on bluray format, and the cell processors being used in like.. everything.

Since every sony executive pulled a different number out of a hat then announced that number in the media then yes they met one of the ten or so different goals. I seem to remember that at one point the number was four million by the end of the year. You gotta love revisionist history. Oblivion and Rainbow Six getting pushed back to late February because of the low launch numbers is just going to start an ugly cycle of publishers not launching games because of low installed base numbers and consumers not buying systems because of a lack of software.

I never understand this sort of stuff... Pretty much the only thing I understand is if I see a Nintendo version of this, and a massive increase number. Any massive increase is good news.

The only thing I can think of this news is - what happens when Sony release LOADS of PS3's. Aren't they losing like $200 or so on each one? If my bets are right, I think Sony are aiming to get back their cash when bluray (if, actually) takes off and their download service is starting to be used for purchasing stuff.
Until then, I expect all Sony news to be quite negative (except the odd fixed awards ceremony or something, lol). Sony have literally taken a gamble, everyone knows this, and its a fact that they are looking to turn profit in the long run, not in the short run like Nintendo.

If it goes sour though, you can bet that Sony news will remain negative. When the iphone comes out, this means the walkman phones will be another section of the Sony corporation to lose out on masses of sales. The walkman phones did quite well this year, apparently.

Sony picked a strange strategy this time, its true that their progress is going to be slow, because they arent looking for a quick fix profit.
But right now its hard to see them becoming the top-dog. But you never know what we may want to buy as the year goes on!

Please check quarterly earnings reports because they are the ONLY true guage of sales from any corporation.

With that said Microsoft Q2 earnings report ending Dec 06

    Xbox 360 Launch
    1.5M consoles Sold
    .9M in North America
    .5M in EMEA, and
    .1M in Japan

Keep in mind NPD is not 100% accurate since they use select retailers to calculate sale figures in North America. I have heard over and over again how MS on sold 600,000 through dec 05 which isn’t accurate. Earnings reports are the ONLY true indicator of how sales, profits & loss revenues etc are collected and distributes to investors as well as the media.

So keep this in mind when NPD releases sales figures for the Wii and the PS3 as they will not be 100%. If you want the true numbers for the quarter you will have to wait till the earnings reports are released.

Sony makes great tvs. Its cameras are great too. It does not make good game consoles. The only reason it won the last generation was because the PS2 represented good value for the money (even though I had to go through two before finding one that worked for more than a few months), and the reason it won the time before that was because Nintendo insisted on its own proprietary cartridge system for storage instead of the cd, which was cutting edge technology at the time. In other words, it was mainly due to the mistakes of others (Microsoft delaying the release of the XBox for a year, etc.) that it ever dominated market share in the game console industry.

Now that Nintendo and Microsoft seem to have their acts together, there's no way it can dominate the same way. Sony's only good at engineering hardware. It's not as innovative as Nintendo and not as good as Microsoft at integrating hardware into neworks.

Not for long... Once news hits that they were literally owned in Japan by the Wii, selling double in almost half the time, and adding to that that they missed their Global/Japan sales projections, they might just turn around and loose the rise in share value they got lol...

As an Xbox 360 fan, its finally good to see some good news for Sony on Gamespot. Gamespot culiminates much of the PS3/Sony hatred.

With all these game systems out...its not the console makers who will win this cycle..its the gamers.

Keep it up Sony...I'm hoping to buy the PS3 once my college semester ends!

Beside Sony's electronic divison, their movies and music did fine. That one big company.

para your an idiot, the xbox 360 only had 500,000 units shipped by this time last year. Learn to read Microsofts own report before you start talking non-sense.

Playstation 3 is still a failure. The Xbox 360 sold more within this time period and demand was still not met. Playstation 3s are in stock at most GameStops now. Xbox 360 kept on selling out well after the Winter season.

no place around where i live has a ps3 in stock-they get one or two systems in and they are gone -just like that---so wherever they are sitting on the shelves at let me know so i can go there and get one--for for the guy making the comment about sitting on the shelves until easter 2015--just remember your ps3 bashing by christmas of 2007--sony will sale alot of ps3's--i dont see it as sony trying to get back on top--as i dont see sony loosing the tope spot in the first place--so ps2's sold almost as many systems as the 360 did over the holiday season--and the ps2 is 5 to 6 yrs old..so there..

Keep up with demand? I guess they are saving all those PS3's sitting on store shelves for Easter sale bonanza in 2015.

well with the ps3 getting off to a bad start and already showing a increase in sales--just wait until they are able to make enough systems to keep up with the demand--their sales will skyrocket to the moon and beyond--
