Assassin's Creed, Fight Night R3 earn effects honors

Ubisoft's stealth actioner, EA's punch party nominated for Visual Effects Society Awards; Hellgate: London, Warhammer: Mark of Chaos also nominated.

Though it won't be out until later this year, Assassin's Creed is already being honored. The game has been nominated for an award by the Visual Effects Society, the nation's preeminent organizations of effects artists.

Assassin's Creed

Check out the VES-award-nominated trailer

Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Assassin's Creed--or, more appropriately, its trailer--is in the running for two awards: Outstanding Real Time Visuals in a Video Game and Outstanding Pre-Rendered Visuals (such as cinematics) in a Video Game. Ubi Montreal staffers Jade Raymond, Nicolas Cantin, Raphael Lacoste, Christophe Martin, Thomas Giroux, and Anne Mai Le Bouyonnec were mentioned by name as potential honorees.

Assassin's Creed's sole competition for the Outstanding Real Time Visuals Award is the PlayStation 3 version of Fight Night Round 3, developed by Electronic Arts' cryptically named Chicago studio, EA Chicago. Sjoholm Christopher, Kat Kelly Hayduk, Hilson Rob, and Jepson Celia were credited with the effects for the punchfest.

In the Pre-Rendered Visuals category, Assassin's Creed is up against the 2006 E3 trailers for Hellgate: London and Warhammer: Mark of Chaos (referred to by the working title "Warhammer Fantasy"). Both games are being published by Namco Bandai Games, and the trailers for both were crafted by Tim Miller and Jerome Denjean.

The VES Awards will be handed out at the Kodak Grand Ballroom in Hollywood, California, site of the Academy Awards and Nintendo's E3 2006 press conference. It is the fifth year the awards, the majority of which are for television and film work, have been handed out.

Assassin's Creed should easily achieve a 9.2 on GameSpot... and man!!!
Jade Raymond is so fine. I'm quite sure the guys working at Ubisoft Montreal studios have hit on her at least once. I know I would, but of course with respect for her craft. There's something special about an attractive female video game producer.

Assassins creed would be a great add on to all the great xbox games like itself ex. Splinter cell and Rainbow six series.

Interesting enough is that out of all the divisions for Ubisoft Montreal is the most successful. Splinter Cell: PT which in my opinion is the worst in the series was made by Shanghai as was Double Agent for the 360. Playing the original Xbox version of Double Agent is a completely different game. I have not been this hyped about a game for along time and as much as I want to play it I hope they take that little bit extra to make it the best it can be.

Jade has to be one of my favourite producers as well

  • GrimBee

    Posted Jan 10, 2007 5:50 am PT

oh.. wait... Playstation 3 version of fight night? If I remember correctly all they added to that was inferior lighting, slightly less quality backgrounds, a few new bruising and a first person view... Hardly a winner, especially as the game has been out for AGES now.

Resistance and Motorstorm should be up for the realism awards, if you ask me. Even though its highly implausable that vehicles explode at literally every bump, or aliens ruining the fun for the germans in resistance.. alot of effects are based on real-life physics, like the actual RACING IN MUD of Motorstorm looks quite realistic.

But please, an award for a game already extremely similar on another platform? Someones been handing out some wads of cash, if you ask me..

  • GrimBee

    Posted Jan 10, 2007 5:46 am PT

Im on my last belt in fight night round 3! Its a great game. However, the way the fighters fall down looks quite terrible. When they hit the ground, they can comedically land sideways, but then tilt so they are landing right on their forehead, with their butt sticking in the air, and their toes pointed on the ground, making them look like the letter A.
Its like freakin sesame street or something, heh heh.

If they sorted out the way the fighters fell, I think it would be a perfect candidate for the whole "effects" thing, but with this flaw its certainly not a winner. I would say gears of war was more of a winner than fight night with the whole chainsaw death thing, slicing people in half, literally in half.

But you know, awards are all clean...

Last year, Ubi launched many games but many of them were disappointing the gamer, I wish the " Assasin's Creed" will not be like that.

Assassin Creed is so good and I want to buy it,but why does it have to come around the same time as Halo 3,that's a bummer.I like to go from one game to another, not 2 at the same time, but I like to own the games when the first come out.....

Come on now, these guys don't even mention Crysis. Laughable. Some "society."

Also, I don't see how you can even compare Assassin's Creed 30-second trailer to something like Hellgate, which is like 5 minutes long.

  • CaptainLunchbox

lol.... awards for games that aren't out yet? Are consoles next? Can we give an award for innovation to the apple/macintosh console while it's still in concept???

  • Riverwolf007

Hell yeah! Lets just start giving out awards to every game thats not released yet. I say game of the year should go to FF 43 the way that it interacts with our cyber-neuron implants is incredible.

How could fight night possibly stand a chance against AC?

  • JimmyChalice

    Posted Jan 9, 2007 7:34 am PT

Well, as far as i know "Assasin's Creed" looks to me like a new "Prince of Persia" game only that instead of the prince its another character, and it is set in the crusades era..

Since "Prince of Persia" series came to an end with the "Two Thrones" (or so it looks like), they couldn't make a new "Prince of Persia"game for next-gen (which would sweet as hell) so they changed the character and called it "Assasin's Creed".

    Thats how i feel. !!!

    Dont you think so ?

  • BrianC6234

    Posted Jan 9, 2007 7:22 am PT

After Assassin's Creed got this award they better not blow it. So far it's not a game. I don't understand awarding a game that doesn't exist. Killzone had a great demo. It should get the award too. Who cares if it ever looks like that. Give it an award.

Come on people who give these awards. At least wait until a game is finished before you do this. Assassin's Creed should be great but we've all seen games have features cut at the end because of time constraints or it just wasn't possible.

the visual effects society is a joke. how can they award a game that hasnt even released yet. what if the game is canceled or something?
