GameStop exec says PS3 in stock

Game retailer's COO says Sony's new console is now in abundant supply--while the Wii remains hard to come by.

For first-party game companies, 2006's holiday season was a critical point in the next-generation console war. Industry trackers have kept a keen eye on the sales performance of the Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, but official numbers aren't expected out of NPD until later this month.

However, at CES yesterday, Sony confirmed that it had shipped out more than 1 million PS3s to North America, and expects 6 million to be available worldwide by March. Now it appears that Sony has overcome its supply issues.

Daniel A. DeMatteo, vice chairman and COO of GameStop, late last week said PS3s are available at "hundreds of the company's 3,700 outlets," according to the New York Times. The Wii, on the other hand, is still hard to come by.

"We got some [Wiis] in yesterday in really limited supply, and they virtually disappeared," DeMatteo said, according to the NYT.

The $250 Wii and $499/$599 PlayStation 3 were very difficult to purchase after their November launches, as gamers lined up outside stores at times days in advance to buy the systems. DeMatteo says this is the first time that PS3 stock has remained unsold in his stores.

Over the weekend, GameSpot editors visited a local EB Games, which is owned by GameStop, and found PS3s available for purchase. As for the Wii, one clerk told GameSpot, "We got some in earlier this week and they were gone in five minutes."

The availability of PS3s can be spun good or bad, depending on which side of the next-gen war one is on. Pro-Sony gamers will note that more PS3s in stores simply means more PS3s that will be sold. On the other hand, doomsayers will simply see ample stock as evidence that consumers aren't buying the system.

    i should pick a ps3 up from gamestop... i have a nice spot on my floor for it. ohhh crap nvm, i forgot i have carpet, and my house will go down in flames after 5 minutes of gameplay. xD but yea, i would like to get one anyway, and a x360.. until then, enjoyin my wii, which i had to camp out for.

    When they get games for it i am there, but R6V and oblivion getting pushed back to late march is bad news for Sony. What is the PS3's biggest release for January? Sonic. What is the only PS3 release for January? Sonic. I mean really whats going on over there, one freaking game in all of January?

    PS3 remain on stock.. i think is because the holidays is already passed, every parent money already empty at their wallet.. so they cant afford 1 PS3 for their child coz.. they already buy others thing for they lovely child... still trusting PS3 will have something out that make you guys shocking...360 is good too.. but right now iam still thinking to buy that coz i have a PC that good enough to play new game that came for pc, as we know 360 game have a similliar title from PC dont bash each system.. just wait n see.. coz we cant make something like they build.. respect others respect yourself

    Don't kidd yourself. NOBODY is going to buy a $600 system. Never have and never will. Hardcore Sony fans (FF,MGS,HS,DMC,whatever) have already brought the system.

    Well, that is because currently, not many people want the PS3 (of course this will all change once the good games come out) Another factor is that at this moment, the PS3 is still extremely expensive. People are not buying, therefore, they are sitting on the shelves. And there will continue to be a supply sitting on the shelves. I think Sony maybe made too many of them, or shipped over too many on this shipment, cause they made a miscalculation based on how crazy it did during it's release. They used that info. to help determine how many to ship in the future. The Wii is hard to find because it seems that everyone wants to pick one up, and being that it is that much cheaper than the PS3, can you really blame them? What I find hard to believe is that 360's are sitting on the shelves. Even with the fact that there were many systems made, many shipments, and the fact that it has been out for awhile, I am sure that many people want 360's and do not have them yet. I am one of those people. I'm surprised that they aren't flying off the shelves like hot cakes.

    Everythingj, you are a complete tool. At every retail store I walk into, I see nothing but piles of 360s sitting there. If it has such great games and is so much better than ps3, why is this? Because buying a $400-600 gaming console is no small purchase for most people. Do you react the same way when you drive by a car dealership, and see so many cars just sitting on the lot?

    i'll repeat myself again and again until the ps3 don't have some AAA games out so that leave me with my ps2 cause none of the next gen have games that appeal to me

    You know nothing you said makes sense. You're like right now the PS3 is worse then the 360 when the PS3 has been out for 2 months and the 360 has been out for over a year and still isn't that impressive. Besides Gears and Halo's "potential" nothing is great on the system or extrodinary. And don't say games like Saints Row and Dead Rising that are less then impressive. Honestly you can claim 360 is doing good right now, but in a few months when Sony starts releasing the same titles that gave it the edge last time around, then what would you be saying then. Also the fact that with a 360 I have to buy a HD DVD drive add on for $200 more is stupid. At least with the PS3 you get bluray at a great price and a good hard drive compared to what you would be getting with the 360. Also whats so next gen about the 360. If any system will be boring and dull down the road, it's easily the 360 as all of its competitors have moved past the standard gaming the 360 has tried to push. Controller is only wireless and the graphics are nice where I could have total innovation with the Wii and the DS, or I could get a PS3 with sixaxi, great games that will be coming out, bluray, and better graphics and I'm only paying $600 for a much better deal. Also I like the 360 just hate when people blindly bash Sony because they can't stand the system their parents got them because it's cheap isn't going to fair out as well as they try and believe.

    Gamespot finally puts out some good PS3 news but the haters always find a way to bash this system. It's ridiculous, don't you guys have anything better to do... Maybe play with your 360 or Wii?

    Also lets not forget, in the long term, that every XBOX 360 sold is most likely going to be a HD-DVD solider. They can get HD-DVD(if they actually want it, i have) for 200 dollars. If they dont want it(Because they dont even have high def) there is no need to purchase it(unlike the ps3, its stuck into the price). In case you are unable to see what most retal business's are doing, let me try to explain.

    I believe its called the apple strategy. Get your customers to buy the latest and greatest, and in 1 week after sales start to slow down, release a better one. Do this while making sure they use your technology. XBOX360 is trying to do that because you have to hvae WIndows Media Computer to link PC-XBOX360. You'll see it more and more as time goes on. Is stupid and not fair to the consumer....so be careful.

    well if we compare ps3 with 360 same time last year by jan 9 i still could not find a 360 anywhere but low and behold i've seen ps3's in stores before new years. the fact is sony wants you to believe its because they are shipping out more consoles when the fact is the demand has definately slowed $500-$600 is too much for a gaming console period.the fact is the ps3 makes a better computer than the 360 but when it comes to games the 360 is superior. all you fanboys talk about the potential of the ps3 which is hypothetical because the fact is they say what it will be able to do not what its able to do now which to me is more important than what it can do 5 to 10 years dowm the road right now what people are seeing is that ps3 is not as superior as sony want us to beleive. now maybe 5 years down the road if it turns out to be more superior than 360 maybe i'll get one and by then im sure the price would have dropped but right now for the money im 360 all the way better performance better games better online community better all around, FACT! lets talk NOW people not LATER. sony has a record of over promising and not delivering hint hint ps2 and its emotion engine, everything microsoft has said they have delivered.sony has dominated for so long now people are starting to see thru the smoke and its time for the king to fall!     Here is why everything is diffreetn front the past.


    FIrst it was 2d. then it was how many things you can get into 2d @ a great frame rate. Then came 3D games and rumble(n64 for both). It revolutionized the industry. Then came better textures, a more complete package but still missing things(ps2, and no antialiasing was stoopid). Then MS came along and added things that people will actually pay extra for. HD, XBLIVE, HDTV(wasnt arond before MS released their HD ready system. yes ps2 had it but it was never focused on. who wants to see jaggies in 720reso).

    then the new system war brewed. 3D has been done, hard drive has been done, online service has been done, rumble feature has been done so what is there really to upgrade with? Sure you can get bigger and faster of everything, but the demand for innovation(like going from snes to n64)was expected and neither Microsoft or Sony really innovated.

    Sure the CELL Processor is neat, but no the average consumer doesnt need it in a PS3(neither does the developer). Sony was still salty from losing the beta max/vhs war and open spoke sayin they will not lose this next format war. They dumped billions of dollars into it and put in things that werent needed(CELL). MS just followed the upgrade path. A complete package of everything with a great abiltity to upgrade(lets not forget they are a software company).

    Wii on the other hand saw where things where going. The thing they were missing was innovation. They brought the rumble feature. They brought the N64. Heck they even brought the cool NES. SO then the Wiimote came into play. Its what people were looking for in a "Next Gen" console. Sure, a lot of poeple want a better video card, hard drive, cpu, blah blah blah but only a select few are really going ot understand everything and actually give a hoot.

    Nntendo has done their research and they chose the right path. Their controller senses motion(six axis does not), it rumbles(six axis does not) and even the stupidest looking game can be a blast(ps3 cant do stupid looking games because they marketed towards the CPU gear head). tHen they release the system for 250 and its what most people actually want! Thats why we've had the same 6 ps3 sitting in our store(Gamestop) for 8 days and we sell out of wii's the hour we get them in stock.

    here in europe the ps3 is not really the big issue at the moment! the nintendo wii is dominating the family side of gamers and the 360 for the hardcore. however over xmas the fastest selling console here was the nintendo ds! i work in retail and all figures show that the nintendo ds past the amount of sales of every console even some put together!

    the psp had few sales and i believe thats the way ps3 will go. they r aiming for the teens and men not family and woman! while the wii is exactly reaching the whole family unit! i have a wii and i hate it, mainly due to no games that i enjoy are out yet, its mainly just party games! i believe the 360 will dominate europe. After everything sony has put us through they will need 2 do something extra special 2 makes us buy that black fingerprinting grilling dustbin machine!

    the PS3 is a technical masterpiece... 2 years ago. after the ps3 release Nvidia just made a video card twice as powerful. 50 gig blue ray disk?... they have some but not available cause it doesnt really hold 50 gigs. wireless internet anyone.. maybe not too darn slow to even be called internet more like 56k (old school internet). 20-30 gig harddrive? are you kidding me what year was this piece of hard ware made in the 1990's? ill break down the sales why it sold out 7% sold to fan boys, 10% sold to parents buying it for gifts for their kids, 83% was sold to bussiness oriented people who re-sold it at rediculous prices. why are there still some in stock you ask, because an average person can not cough up 600 bucksfor a system. dont get me wrong i believe the ps3 is well worth every dollar and more but im just stating the facts

    what you fanboys don't understand is there is something for everyone. NOT everyone will be satisfied with every console. some will prefer PS3 over 360 vice versa. What you fanboys need to realize is that you spend way too much time posting and reading peoples comments. Take an economics class, maybe you'll see that if one company dominates the overall quality of the product goes down. The only fanboys that we need are fanboys of the game industry , not fanboys of a particular console. If you don't realize this then stay in your room and "play" with yourself until you reach "nirvana". And what I have to realize is no matter what logic I explain to you guys, and no matter how much sense I try to slap in your face, you guys will never get it.....I can't believe I typed this much................

    from the guy who works at gamestop, "I did not expect to see a shipment of PS3's sit in the back room all day untouched because no one was asking for them."

    this is what i've been saying all along.. Once the initial wave of sony fanboys got their ps3s, the rest of the world took a good look at sonys latest product and said, 'uh yeah that's nice, but there's cool stuff on both the 360 and wii, - and those are both cheaper'

    Now the ps3 has to compete with the red hot popularity of the wii, and the 9mil+ console lead of the xbox 360. throw in the fact that sonys console is more expensive, has fewer exclusive titles, and doesn't even look or perform better than the 360, and suddenly, the world realizes that the ps3 is a really just expensive status gadget no one really needs. The truth is, pretty much the only people buying ps3s are really branded by the exclusive sony franchises, and they end up paying more for this machine, while playing less games for their money. They essentialy limit their gaming experience, paying more because they trust in Sony, without ever looking at the competition because it's 'evil microsoft,' or 'kids games nintendo' Well uh, rise and shine people, that's what sony has been wanting you to think, so you'd shell out the big cash to buy their next product.

    But honestly, i don't feel that bad for them. The fanboys of the universe are just trying to relive the past where the playstation was EVERYTHING; and simply the only console you ever needed. Well, anyone who's ever taken a marketing class can tell you why they feel this way. It's called 'brand loyalty,' and it's one of the biggest cards sony was counting on to carry the ps3. Well it's time to wise up people. Anyone who says that the you need the ps3 so you can play, "MGS, FInal Fantasy, Tekken" doesn't realize that the same argument is a reason NOT to get the ps3. If you drop the 600$ there, how are you going to play Gears of War, Halo3, Mass Effect, Twilight Princess, etc etc.

    Exclusive titles are not an argument to get the ps3, because you can play twice as many exclusives on the 2 other consoles that are honestly just as good.

    I think people that are trying to be smart about their money (and at 600$ you have to be) realize that getting a ps3, just doesn't make sense.

    How exactly is ample stock NOT evidence that consumers aren't buying the system? Sure, they're buying it, but not nearly in the numbers of the Wii's sales. And personally I've seen more than one PS3 available in more than one store on the same day several times now in my city (Sacramento, CA) yet for some reason I still can't get a Wii without getting one from a scalper. Why is that, exactly, if the PS3 is doing as well as we'd be had to believe? Key words there; be had.

    I'm going to go ahead and respond to your post from last night. Seriously, I couldn’t keep my eyes open. From what I can tell..you don’t need sleep. I have read every single post on this board and one thing is clear to me. Everyone here has different gaming needs. But one thing is for damn certain. You will never, NEVER see a FF MGS or what ever PS exclusive tournament, college or otherwise. I opted for the Wii60 and I believe whole heartedly I got the best of both worlds. Nintendo does not rehash. They take proven formulas and make them better (with the exception of some). Those of you who say that Zelda is the only game the Wii will have obviously have not played it to the end. I have and it was well worth the price of the system itself. Sorry. Smash Brothers and all the other myriad “rehashed” but proven franchises are just the icing on the cake. Madden was the top selling game of 2006. You know what was second? You guessed it! NSMB. Sorry. PROVEN FRANCHIES, TIME TESTED GAME PLAY= PWNAGE TO ALL. (fahttp://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3156114) As far as Gears being over rated, were we even playing the same game? Let me guess, you didn’t play that one to the end either. There will be so much HYPE FOR HALO it will be hard for Sony to breathe. But alas my needs are different from yours.     ok well just because retailers are receiving more shipments of PS3s then around christmas, that doesnt mean that people aren't buying them. The article never mentions andything about the PS3s not selling...also correct me if wrong but im sure sony has shipped more playstations then nintendo has wiis, so the people dying for a playstation are buying them while the people wanting wii's have to wait a bit. Besides, Sony is genius, let the rich people buy there PS3s then when sales begin to drop lower the $ for the less fortunate

    Well it depends on how you see it, in my point of view is only a mater of price tags, most have 250.00 to spend on the wii (that i belive is the game cube v 2 or gamecube 2). But also that it was hard to find(ps3) during the holidays . And the places tah have it were over priced (most times two times the cost). But as soon as new games taht realy take advantage of the ps3 capabilltyies and a little price drop at the retailers( 600 for the 60gb). we are going to see that those systems will be sold.

    Here's a funny little story for everyone - I work at a rather large electronics retailer who has had problems just like everyone else keeping both wii's and ps3's in stock. Just the other day we got a large shipment of PS3s in and had a line, not out of the ordinary to see once or twice a week. So we open the doors and the flood of people make their way to our gaming section where our guy tells them that all the accessories are on the table to his left and the PS3s are at the front, saying how many of each type we had. The customers stare blankly at him and one pipes in with "we want the wii", our guy had to break about 20 hearts that day in one fell swoop. On the average I'd say we have more people in line for the wii controllers than for PS3s. From what im seeing day in and day out it looks to be the Wii is winning - and to be honest im an Xbox guy so dont say my view is biased - when we get wii's in theyre gone the same day, we now have ps3 shipments doubling up and have had to put a display table in the entrance of our store to encourage the units to move. All in all no one knows how it will end up just yet but nintendo has the lead in my eyes.

    The problem is not the PS3, it's the games. I'm on the fense about getting one, as my friend has one and it is pretty cool, but right now it is not worth is for the games that are out. Most people are probably just thinking that just waiting a few more months for more and better games to come out, more of a system supply, and fixed hardware is a better option than buying a system right now.

    I have yet to meet a person that has a PS3, though I do know one that wants it... when/if he gets the money for it (he wants a 1080p TV first, so that could be a while).

    The high price is going to hurt Sony this gen for a long time, and may leave a dent in their sales compared to the PS2. To think most of this is because Sony's trying to pump out Blu-ray. I'll admit mixing Blu-ray with their popular PlayStation consoles sounds good in theory, as it could somewhat curtail their past proprietary mistakes (Betamax, anyone?), but it may bite them back in reality due to inflated cost. Only time will tell. A sudden spark in market appeal might be able to break past a costly price.

    yea i here that... im not a fanboy like most posting on this news lol... i have a 360 and i admit, its one great piece of gaming machinery... but i definately want a ps3 for the exclusives and for the simple fact of seeing what it can do... the only problem is... getting $600 saved up to actually buy it lol

    The Reason Their Are so Many PS3 is oviously because Xmas is Over And People are broke in thier pockets this is a huge mistake by Sony they should have just wated until they had enough units to go around in the US and Canada its bad enough they have a shortage of games and this rediculess price tag but thru time espically Tax time the sales will pick up but the way they are running things im confadent that i can work for the Playstation Dept and do a much better job of marketing and Stretighy

    Eagles5 you be the judge as to what it means. I was standing in the cashiers line waiting to pay so you're right, I have no idea what happened between the time I left and the time I came back. But what's obvious was that there were 8 or so PS3s on the sales floor. You be the judge as to what that means. If you can call it spin or Nintendo_ftw, I don't care. I just pity you for buying such an expensive machine (if you have one) and mediocre first gen 1080p titles to gaze at and not realizing the whole point of this Gamespot news bit is to show that in general the Wii's flew off the shelf and continued to fly off while the PS3's initial launch mass sell out was all hype. Now that the dust has settled, the tumbleweeds are dancing around the Sony boxes. Again, whatever your take is that's fine with me.

    I finally got my PS3 from GameStop yesterday. Funny story though, the manager that sold it to me was telling me to tell all my friends that they had them in-stock. He said they are having a hard time selling them now. I laughed and bought one, but after playing Resistence and Ridge Racer 7 and checking out the weak PS Network Store offerings I'm starting to feel that I payed to much for a system with not that many good games right now. Oh well, the 360 was the same when it came out. I'm just glad I didn't buy one off Ebay or I would have been pissed. Can't wait to find a Wii though.
