CES 07: 1m PS3s shipped in NA in '06

Electronics giant runs down the numbers during CES presentation, reiterates goal of 6 million units shipped worldwide by end of March.

LAS VEGAS--With the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show kick-off just one day away, Sony held a press briefing Sunday afternoon to show off some of its upcoming products. But just as the PlayStation division represents only one of many businesses the company runs, so too was the game segment of the presentation just one element in a sea of announcements for new TVs, camcorders, PCs, Blu-ray players, and all other manner of electronics for which the company is known.

And in comparison to last year's grandiose CES keynote address delivered by Sony Corp. CEO Howard Stringer--which included appearances by actor Tom Hanks and Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown--today's event was a nearly intimate affair. The invite-only gathering was attended by approximately 300 journalists, analysts, and assorted Sony execs and was held in the company's CES show floor booth. Stringer had a nonspeaking role, acknowledging restrained applause when introduced at the top of the 50-minute press conference.

In the portion of the event devoted to the company's game business, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille took to a side stage inside the booth to announce that the company had shipped 1 million PlayStation 3 units into the North American retail channel by the end of December.

In September, SCEA head of corporate communications Dave Karraker said the company's goal was to ship 1 million to 1.2 million PS3 systems to North America by the end of the year.

Dille also repeated Sony's goal of shipping 6 million PS3s worldwide by the end of March. The electronics giant will launch the PS3 in several new regions that month, including Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia/Asia.

    Hi im a fan of gaming and have bought the mega drive, dreamcast, ps2, ps1, n64, gamecube , xbox and have just bought the xbox 360 this christmas and already have nine games( gears, ghost recon, perfect dark, pes, doa4, kameo, oblivion, spintercell double agent and pgr3) I love my ps2 and would of rated it above all my consoles untill i bought my 360. Since having it and joining the online community i have to say althought there are more games out for playsation 2 i have had more fun with my 360 and due to it being such a success in europe and north america all of the third party games i wanted to play including assassins creed, virtua fighter, gta and unreal tournament 2007 are all gonna be on the 360. Althought i am a fan of tekken, gran turismo, metal gear solid, jax and daxter and final fantasy i have to say that with pgr and forza 2 and splinter cell da (next splinter cell is looking most likely be 360 exclusive), lost odyessy, blue dragon, oblivion, kameo and banjo and kazzoie, doa4 and virtua fighter i have all my gaming needs fufilled. plus ive been able to buy some of my games for 15-20 pounds second hand which has saved me money (bonus).

    I hope the playstation is a sucess for true gamers sake as competition is good and makes people strive for better and so improves our experience as gamers. But so far i have been really dissapointed with the choices that sony have made in general with the bluray being a big mistake due to production costs, difficulty in developing game for the system and the increase in loading times and other parts of the console suffering due to the cost plus the real lack of good games so far. I at this moment in time am not a believer and as such will not be buying a ps3 yet and maybe never due to its exspense. The 360 really has one me over due to the quality of the games the resonablish price and the fantastic competitive online gaming community (pes, gears, doa4, ghost recon and pgr3 rock online) and i would reccomend it to any gamer. p.S I have a 320 gig external hard drive which i bought for £70 which allows me to store as many tracks and films as i want and can play them all though my 360 which means i have no problems with space. Here hoping PS3 improves and either reduces its price or gives us somthing worht spending all that money on (don't really care about bluray give us some games.)

    FFXIII is gonna provide Sony a huge chunk of the market when XII couldn't outsell Gears of War or Guitar Hero II? It'll provide a sales boost, sure, but not enough to get Sony out of the hole it's in right now. One or two games won't win this generation; a steady stream of them will. Which is exactly why comparing Microsoft's launch to Sony's doesn't matter. As long as the 360 has games coming out NOW to compete with the PS3's offerings, it'll be pretty difficult for Sony to make up their lost ground.

    Ps3 wont be killing the market untill the release of its power house games appear...FFXIII and FFvsXIII.....at which point all of the SE fans are gunna pick one up....and thats a HUGE portion of the market

    ....Wii is cheap .....of course it will sell......plus Phoenix...ur full of BS....Wii is for the poverty stricten lol

    It's not a lie - I've been to the mall twice in the last week, and the three game stores (2 EB Games and 1 Gamestop) all had gigantic signs telling passers-by that they had PS3s in stock.

    No Nintendo Wii consoles, though.

    Don't think it's gonna make too much of a major difference if they don't drop the $600 tag down a bit. (And i don't want to hear any crap about "Get a job" from anyone because I know for a fact that the majority of people that say this don't have jobs themselves) Honestly i can truly find it more things worthwile for $600. I do know that systems in the past was worth way more, and it was a pain for me to get them back then, but the economy changes, and the rate at which people gain money changes as well.

    Yeah ric, the ironic thing is that at the Best Buy I work at, we've had PS3s in stock since Tuesday night (yeah I know, I know, PS3s in stock? I must be lying!), and yet we're sold out of PS2s. If someone doesn't buy these PS3s soon, they'll be "future-proof" simply because they won't even be opened until far in the future...

    What's really sad is that it's outselling the PS3 everywhere. And with the PS3 being easily found and completely *cough* backwards compatible, there's no reason for that to be the case.

    UHhh... what are you guys talking about? They said they would ship 1 million by the end of 06... they did. They said they would ship 6 million by the end of their fiscal year... they might.     these two make very valid points here in oz it is true the #1 game lately has been a ps2 game when i thiunk fifa 07 for xbpx360 was 5th till lately when gears of war came even so the game only was in top spot for a couple of weeks

    My fiance's store in NH not only can't sell any PS3s, they keep getting people returning the 1000 dollar Gamestop bundles because they couldn't flip them on eBay. Since after Christmas, they've never been out of stock on PS3s.

    Wow, so you found a link on the Internet saying that all the ps3 are sold out. I guess it must be true then. Of course I could find a link on the Net that says that the holocaust never happened, or that we never landed on the moon. I guess that must be true too. You can believe whatever you want pal. I'm sure you believe that the PS3's cpu can do 218 Gflops and that the "Emotion cpu can render toystory like graphics", and that the Sixaxis controller won an Emmy. Maybe you also believe in Santa and that the moon is made of cheese. I believe what I see with my two eyes, and I can go to a Best buy 3 blocks from my house and find a stack of PS3s just sitting there collecting dust. By the way, My definition of sitting on the shelf collecting dust means SITTING ON THE SHELF COLLECTING DUST.

    I've been to several stores in the greater Phoenix area recently and stores like best buy and circuit city actually had stacks of around twenty or so sitting in the middle of the store, in plain view of everyone and no one cared. A big reason for that, isn't people not wanting them, but because a lot of people think they won't be there, and also because most people spent a lot of money on Christmas and simply can't afford dropping another several hundred dollars on a video game system.

The only reason they are in stock is because people think they are sold out everywhere and don’t bother to ask. For example, when I got mine I walked into a Best Buy to get something else. I didn’t even ask about the PS3’s assuming they were sold out. One of my friends happen to work there and told me that they just got some in. Needless to say I bought one. Everyone here knows that PS3’s are not sitting around collecting dust. If you say any different you are just hating on Sony.

    How does Sony hope to get that money back? Through game sales of course. Too bad consoles that sit on shelves collecting dust don't sell games, and neither do the ones waiting to be sold on EBAY.

    I truly don't know why I bother reading any of these threads... between murky language and hot-headed fanatisism, it makes it excruciating to find a sound argument. Suggestion: In stead of making completely unfounded claims, i.e,.. Impostorzim, laez, supposedly detailing why you prefer your console of choice, rather state your console of choice and be done with it.

    ps3 sales will slowly but surely pick up again soon, all those people saying they are sitting and collecting dust, well a weeksago at my local best buy they had 3 sitting there "collecting dust" and now they are gone, in fact i saw somebody with one under their arm last night walking up to the checkstand, and to be honest, i know ps3s are selling relatively well because every so often i notice they will have 5 or 6 ps3 controllers on the shelf and in a day or so they will all be sold out, and they get a shipment of controllers in every week, this goes for every store in my area and i know noone is buying ps3 controllers to sit and stare at them

    Considering that Capcom has already released two exclusive games for the 360 (Dead Rising and Lost Planet), I think it's safe to say that Xbox 360 owners have Capcom too...

    I´m sticking true to the Playstation 3. I don´t care what you all say. I´ve read all of the new updates and they all seem good enough to me. The online games seem better, plus the fact that you aren´t paying, and well, ...hehe we have Capcom you suckers!!

    First off, PS3s are NOT sold out everywhere, period. I work in the media dept. of a Best Buy, and we just received a shipment of 70 or so PS3s Tuesday night. When I left tonight at 10:30, we had...35 left. The same goes for a lot of other Best Buys in the area. So unless Sony shipped us 35 boxes of bricks (insert PS3 joke here), the PS3s are, for the moment, fairly easy to obtain. As for blu-ray being a superior format...Well, there's no denying that it has greater capacity, but has anyone ever complained about having to play a game with multiple disks? That didn't stop FFVII (4 disks) for the PS1, and as far as I know, Blue Dragon is currently the only 360 that even uses two. Also, I thought I read some stories about how blu-ray read times were subpar at the moment, so if that's true, all the space in the world doesn't help them out.

    Finally, developers raving about the PS3 development tools? Every interview I've read mostly makes note of how complicated it is to program for the PS3. Dev kits or not, I haven't heard the same kind of positive comments that you speak of. In fact, I just read John Carmack's (of Doom fame) view of the PS3 vs. 360, and let's just say he's not pro-PS3.

    However, I DO agree that you should buy what you like, and just stick with it. The problem is that most people are more interested in knocking other systems than in enjoying their own.

    What's with all the Sony hate? First off everyone here knows that PS3's are sold out everywhere... don't be a dumb ass. Second, I can sit in my hotel room and watch/listen to all of the media on my PS3 from my PSP. How can you not think that is hot? I like the 360 just fine as well, but as next gen games evolve and grow in size the blu-ray drive is going to be an advantage. Even if Blu-ray doesn't win the format war (which I don't see how it could lose... 7 out of 8 of the big hollywood companies support it, 5 of them are exclusive, as opposed to HD-DVDs 1 exclusive : Universal), the blu-ray format is here to stay as a storage medium with it's superior storage capacity. Is all this hate stemming from the fact that you 360 owners no longer have the “cutting edge system?” And don’t give me this crap about how 360 is easier to program propaganda crap. Every company making games for the PS3 is raving about the awesome developer tools that are completely OPEN SOURCE. Sony even choose to use OpenGL which has been ahead of DirectX since the beginning of graphics standardization. There are obvious advantages to either system. Just pick what you like and buy it. Stop hating on the other company just because mommy won’t buy you both of them.

    PS2 was a great game console, PS3 is gimmicky all-in-one tech toy with it's cheap sixaxis controller minus the rumble, and non-standard blue-ray player. Sony forgot that it's all about the games, not convergence of non-proven DVD technology. I want a game console... period.

    By the way, Konami cancelled FIVE Playstation 3 games today, including Gradius, and Coded Arms.

    Listen... i dont care what console you buy or which has the better textures in NBA 2k7... all i know is I grew up a playstation fan, playing mgs and res evil and tekken.
