Research firm: 75 million PS3s sold by 2010

The first professional prognostication of the year says Sony's system will win the console wars but won't dominate like its predecessor.

While most of the globe spent the last few days popping champagne and recuperating from the subsequent headaches, business analyst firm Research and Markets, based out of Dublin, Ireland, was busy putting the final touches on its latest examination of the gaming industry.

The company is currently peddling a brief titled "The Transforming Global Video Games Market: The Emergence of Next Generation Gaming," which examines the future of the industry, concentrating largely on the race between the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

The firm believes that the PS3 will ultimately carry the largest market share, with 75 million PS3s sold worldwide by 2010. However, the company doesn't expect the PS3 to dominate the new console cycle the same way the PlayStation 2 did last generation, due largely to European "late launch issues" and the head start of the Xbox 360.

Though Research and Markets didn't divulge its long-term sales predictions for the Xbox 360 or Wii in today's press release, a quick look at the brief's table of contents reveals more of the company's opinions. Titles of topics include "Xbox 360 is close on the heels of the PS3 overall," "The US is expected to be the largest next-generation console market by 2010," and "The handheld market is no longer a one horse race."

"You people won't want to buy a PlayStation 3 (60G $659.99 [CND]) with blue - ray built into it. Yet the XBOX 360 ($499.99 [CND]) can play HD DvDs by adding the HD DvD Drive which is $199.99 [CND]. Together that is $699.98 [CND] which is more then the PlayStation 3 without tax. With tax it's $804.98 (XBOX 360) and with the PlayStation 3 built in blue - ray it is $758.99. The cheapest HD DvD player I have found is $79.99 [CND] - $129.99 [CND] and the blue - ray players $1299.99 [CND] which was from Samsung (BD-P1000) not Sony (because Sony made a blue - ray player with a high price). So if you don't buy a PlayStation 3 it shouldn't be because of the cost because in the long run it's more cheater if you want your XBOX 360 to play next - gen DvDs. That is just the tip of the iceberg with cost and power of the PlayStation 3. Even with the games the Wii has lower rated games on this site then the PlayStation 3 but the Wii never gets bashed down. With the PlayStation 3 you'll see better games as the year goes on even on the Wii because it just launched. Even right now I think there aren't that much good games on the XBOX 360 I say only a hand full are decent."

Man so many Sony haters in here, and GDI most are lol360 lovers, for crying out loud why are you only flaming Sony news when we all know that they did dominate before and they will again. I own a PS3, lol360 & Wii and honestly speaking the 360 only has a couple of games that truly made me want to play, they had a friggin 1 year headstart and they only have a couple of good games? The sole purpose of buying a 360 was only for Halo 3, nothing more, And if you think $600 dollars is alot then think again, i had to pay $1500 for it and im not disappointed at all, so stop whinning and enough flaming, if you love your console then just marry it for all i care and dont hog the mesaage board in here.

Not that many good games on the 360, theruiner_1? Jesus, man, what have you been playing? Gears of War, Dead Rising, Oblivion (that one's not exclusive, but oh well), PGR 3... all fantastic games. I mean, the quality of those games aren't really even a matter of opinion... I defy you to play Dead Rising and not be entertained.

Too all the naysayers, Resistance is really good, and it looks fantastic on an HDTV. Oh, and it doesn't have the frame rate issue that GoW has.

Agreed plain and simple. It Does have better technology. I'm sure future games will be great on it. But alot of people are not going to buy it because of a price. Sony Fanboys, its up to you to help them get that price lower. Buy an extra one and sell it on Ebay for a lower price. That can help sony out alot. I wont do that however lol but you 100% no changing people mind fanboys can. And whoever reported me saying that I said something rude needs to layoff.

seth24 "ps3 graphics chip alone is worth about over $500."

Please, the 7800 series chips that the PS3 is based on are now available at very cheap prices, LOL.

Furthermore, It's not worth the silicon it's laid on. The Xenos GPU in the 360 is unified shader 100%, and it can do things PS3 can't ever dream off doing like run HDR and 4x AA simultaneously. Direct X 10 will enable the 360 to do things only dreamt of on PS3, more shaders, more geometry, more lighting.

heh, some ppl are mentioning the great games to come out for the ps3, and they are right. i'll probly get one if the price does drop. but, dont count out the wii cause the current games are sub-par on average. look how ninty wh*red the ds after it had been out for about a year by adding great games. i find it hard to believe that the 3 will outsell the wii. of course, consoles are a bit of a different story.

No it isn't iPods and phones are useful. Now that I have taken my gratuitous shot, my point is people have a price point they set as a maximum. Maybe an Ipod is acceptable at 300 but not 600. Maybe a phone at 400 but not 600. Maybe a console at 400 but not 600........ get my drift?

It's way too early to predict anything about any console. The 360 has only been out for a year, and the Wii and PS3 have only been out for a few months. It's not fair to judge until late 2008 in my opinion. It took a year or two for the last-generation to get rolling with truly great games, and I suspect the same will happen this time around.

those of u who can afford a ps3 and like the ps2 then go for it, those who cant afford the ps3 then either u wait 1-2 years or buy another system then buy the ps3 1-3 years! sounds good??

  • Torque1599

Frankly I think that it is too soon to tell. The PS3 seems to be the most powerful system on the market, but we will have to wait and see how its games will shape up as developers learn to unlock more of it's power. Results so far have been unimpresive.

The Wii has a truly unique concept. Though the motion based cotnroller was derided at first. Dramatic demonstrations of the product's use have ignited public interest. I beleive that as more games are released that make use of the Wii's motion controller, particularly any game that can take Red Steel's concept and execute it well could prove the Wii's control set up to be truly revolutionary.

Finally, the XBox 360. When the XBox was first released it brought features that had previously been relegated to the realm of computers like Online multiplayer and an internal hard drive when Sony only offered more of the same. The 360, still has those features and it actually seems to be more powerful than the ps3. It also has and will have more good games than the other systems. However, it lacks six axis support for now. I am sure that will be solved with a future pherial.

Each system has its own distinct advantages. It's really too soon to call the console wars. Chances are pretty good that these guys will look foolish by this time next year.

i have played the 360,ps3, and the wii only the 360 and ps3 have managed to amaze me with the graphics and gameplay,
for the 360 i played gears of war - one hell of a great game
for the ps3 i played motor strom, resistance:fall of man, and genji(i think that is how u spell it)- motor storm and fall of man has amazing graphics, and in genji it has a great layout but the camera is so bad!!!! for the wii i played excite truck- at first i was into the whole controller thing for a total of 10 secs after that it was just plain crap (i mean the game) it is so boring. so coming in third place is the wii
second place the 360 (the games now like of amazed me i don't think microsoft will have this great games)
    and first the ps3

Ricsuave that makes no sense, a PS3 isn't an iPod or phone. seth is just pointing out that people spend alot of money on one thing with no problem, but yet the PS3 which can do alot of things, it seems to be a problem to spend it. It seriously isnt that hard, even if you can only afford to set aside $10-20 every paycheck, unless something unexpected comes up, you'll be able to get a PS3 by 2010.
With that said i know some people live in an extemely tight budget, this isn't targeted toward you

first of all, lol @ analysts and second 360 is not going to win. period. it will do much better than last gen but Sony has too big of a fanbase, all they need is some "mature" title by some big-name company and it'll send the kiddies running for it....and on top of that Japan has no intention of supporting the 360. they are on the Wii right now but given some better games the PS3 should also take off in Japan

  • Tom1243

    Posted Jan 2, 2007 2:21 pm PT

so the Ps3 is going to sell 74 million in 3 years? I highly doubt that. The PS2s huge sales was due to is good price for the console. What 'average joe' is going to be able to magic up like £450. I think the wii may win this time, with a tight little scrap for second place, i think the 360 may get it because of the price.
