Silent Hill 2 movie confirmed

[UPDATE] French director Christophe Gans tells magazine DVDrama that the movie is "well underway," though there's confusion over Neil Gaiman's possible contribution.

There are a slew of film adaptations of video games in production right now, Hitman, Alice, and Postal, for example. Now, according to director Christophe Gans, Silent Hill 2 can be added to that list.

Gans, the Antibes-born director of the first Silent Hill movie, has revealed that a second SH film is on the way and that it will correct the mistakes of the first.

The original Silent Hill, released on April 21, 2006, told the story of Rose Da Silva, a mother who sets out to find a town called Silent Hill, which her daughter Sharon calls to in her sleep.

Gans confirmed in an interview with French magazine DVDrama that "there will indeed be a Silent Hill 2 and it is officially ordered and is already well underway. Once he has finished his adaptation of Driver, Roger Avary will be [working on the script], helped by his friend Neil Gaiman."

Roger Avary is a Canadian-born director, producer, and writer. He has previously worked on the screenplays for the first Silent Hill and Killing Zoe and won an Oscar for his work on Pulp Fiction.

British author Neil Gaiman is most famous for his series of Sandman graphic novels and has also worked on screenplays for the TV series of his novel Neverwhere, as well as Mirrormask and Princess Mononoke.

However, Gaiman's actual contribution is now under some doubt, after a post on his own blog stated, "Yesterday I discovered pretty much all of my FAQ messages were people asking whether I was really going to be writing the Silent Hill sequel with Roger Avary. I'm afraid that I don't think I am--I mean, it's the first thing I've ever heard of it, and I'm sure that if they make a sequel Roger would want to write it himself."

Gans' original statement has since been retranslated, so until there is clarification from Gans or Gaiman, some mystery still shrouds the title's development.

Gans added that he may not have time to take on the project himself, due to his commitments on the adaptation of another video game project, Onimusha.

When asked who he would like to see direct if he were unable to, Gans told DVDrama that, "If I cannot take on Silent Hill 2 myself, the director who does would need to continue in the same style as the first film. One does not want to make a Hollywood-style movie, and I think that it makes sense if the director of the sequel is European--in the best case scenario, French."

He also revealed that he was planning a special two-disc collector's-edition DVD of the original Silent Hill, but that would be a long time coming, possibly not for two and a half to three years, and that he intends to start work on it only after finishing up Onimusha.

I actually think David Fincher would be a great choice for the director of Silent Hill 2. He's amazing at creating atmosphere through cinematography, mood, dialogue, and lighting, among other things that I thing he could bring to the film. Just my oppinion

the problem with the first movie was that there were too many people. the biggest part of silent hill isn't the monsters, it isn't the characters, its the feeling of being completly and utterly alone. fear isn't what drives the game its depression. in silent hill you're not suppose to fully understand the story, its not suppose to make you feel like you've achieved something once you've completed the game, and the first movie did a good job at that. if this movie is made, hopefully it will follow a similar storyline as silent hill 2 the game . the most frightning things are what you can't see.

Best thing for this movie to success, put a JAPANESE writer. American horror revolves around chase-be-chased with a knife or machete, pretty cheesy and repetitive if you ask me
Japanese folks know how to put a good ol scare with their twisted ideas and mind dazzling puzzles.

In the next movie: - Keep the atmosphere.
    - Work on the storyline and the abstract part that Silent Hill is really all about.
    - And do not, do NOT end the next movie anywhere close to the first one.

LOL, maybe David Lynch could direct it. It would certainly have the "confusion" element down

SH movie is the best game/movie transition ever in my opinion. The movie captures the game series so well, a sequel would be welcomed I think. I can't wait for SH2. I just hope they don't 'Hollywood-ize' the franchise and keep to its roots as much as possible. The Japanese version of the Ring is a fine example.

The first one didn't suck at all. People just need to understand that not everyone is a fan and so they took more time explaining the story than putting o much monster in there. Im a fan of the series and believe me I would have loved more horrible creatures that would had scared the hell out of me but then there wouldn't had been much time to explain as to why she got there in the first place. The second one now should be creepier since now would be a continuation to the first one and the introduction had already been made. Its kinda like the games Silent Hill didn't get extremely awesome till the third installment.

I just watched the movie again and actually enjoyed it more. I can see that they were trying to keep the core of silent hill but changed the story a bit. I hope the 2nd does a good job of explaining and tie-in the first film. If I had my wish I would like to see a direct translation of the second game. The first film seemed to be a mesh of the first 2 games.

The best horror is comming back! Yeah! No, I don't think they died either, they ARE trapped inside one of the "auras" of Silent Hill however... But many people have been trapped and living there. Anyone who also read the (extremely good) comics know that, the artist from "Paint It Black" and that punk girl (she's soooo cute) are great examples of that.

  • NextStopEarth

    Posted Jul 3, 2007 12:27 pm GMT

Why does everybody think they died in the movie??? THEY DID NOT DIE. If you think I'm wrong I point you to the fact that the director himself said they did not die.

I will be waiting for this!
I liked the first movie a lot, however a fan of the game series would feel the soundtrack -Brilliant indeed!- as a collage or a re-built (I'm not mocking or underestimating that work (I love it!), just trying to express the feeling I got as a huge fan of the game). A thing that I dislike was that fanatic witch-hunter behavior of the inhabitants of Silent Hill, also there were too much people, it was something different compared with that feeling of loneliness that surrounds the games.
Hope this movie keep the good work (even improve it) of the first, and avoid falling into The Abyss and join disappointing game- based movies like Mario Bros or Resident Evil.

yeah the first Silent Hill movie captured the Silent Hill atmosphere pretty well, despite what the critics say (critics don't know crap, I'm willing to bet there was not one film critic in the world that played a Silent Hill game before reviewing that movie). The pyramid-head sequence (almost) gave me nightmares. I hope the second movie lives up to the first.

I thought the first Silent Hill movie was brilliant. The complex plot fit in with the games riddle based play style. It made you think about what was happening, trying to reason through the plot. I found it very rich, not exactly a horror, just a long creepy Metaphor about the after life. The acting was good enough to excuse my critical side. The costumes kicked ***. And just like the games, the plot did not end happily, more or less leaving you feeling sorrow for the main characters. I still debate with myself over what exactly the plot was over, Silent Hill was Heaven and Hell~ at the end they were able to leave, the idea suggests a Purgatory. But there was no strong closure. Just like the game, leaving you mind F***ed contemplating everything. Beautifully done, i hope the second follows game number 2's plot line more, that was always my favorite.

That is a good news for Slient Hill fans ^^ In the next Slient Hill movie hope to see the actor will kill some moster with a pipe or something else i mean make it just like in the game not only run away like the first movie. The first movie is great cos it really bring us the world of Slient Hill to real.
