Silent Hill 2 movie confirmed

[UPDATE] French director Christophe Gans tells magazine DVDrama that the movie is "well underway," though there's confusion over Neil Gaiman's possible contribution.

There are a slew of film adaptations of video games in production right now, Hitman, Alice, and Postal, for example. Now, according to director Christophe Gans, Silent Hill 2 can be added to that list.

Gans, the Antibes-born director of the first Silent Hill movie, has revealed that a second SH film is on the way and that it will correct the mistakes of the first.

The original Silent Hill, released on April 21, 2006, told the story of Rose Da Silva, a mother who sets out to find a town called Silent Hill, which her daughter Sharon calls to in her sleep.

Gans confirmed in an interview with French magazine DVDrama that "there will indeed be a Silent Hill 2 and it is officially ordered and is already well underway. Once he has finished his adaptation of Driver, Roger Avary will be [working on the script], helped by his friend Neil Gaiman."

Roger Avary is a Canadian-born director, producer, and writer. He has previously worked on the screenplays for the first Silent Hill and Killing Zoe and won an Oscar for his work on Pulp Fiction.

British author Neil Gaiman is most famous for his series of Sandman graphic novels and has also worked on screenplays for the TV series of his novel Neverwhere, as well as Mirrormask and Princess Mononoke.

However, Gaiman's actual contribution is now under some doubt, after a post on his own blog stated, "Yesterday I discovered pretty much all of my FAQ messages were people asking whether I was really going to be writing the Silent Hill sequel with Roger Avary. I'm afraid that I don't think I am--I mean, it's the first thing I've ever heard of it, and I'm sure that if they make a sequel Roger would want to write it himself."

Gans' original statement has since been retranslated, so until there is clarification from Gans or Gaiman, some mystery still shrouds the title's development.

Gans added that he may not have time to take on the project himself, due to his commitments on the adaptation of another video game project, Onimusha.

When asked who he would like to see direct if he were unable to, Gans told DVDrama that, "If I cannot take on Silent Hill 2 myself, the director who does would need to continue in the same style as the first film. One does not want to make a Hollywood-style movie, and I think that it makes sense if the director of the sequel is European--in the best case scenario, French."

He also revealed that he was planning a special two-disc collector's-edition DVD of the original Silent Hill, but that would be a long time coming, possibly not for two and a half to three years, and that he intends to start work on it only after finishing up Onimusha.

LOL, maybe David Lynch could direct it. It would certainly have the "confusion" element down

SH movie is the best game/movie transition ever in my opinion. The movie captures the game series so well, a sequel would be welcomed I think. I can't wait for SH2. I just hope they don't 'Hollywood-ize' the franchise and keep to its roots as much as possible. The Japanese version of the Ring is a fine example.

The first one didn't suck at all. People just need to understand that not everyone is a fan and so they took more time explaining the story than putting o much monster in there. Im a fan of the series and believe me I would have loved more horrible creatures that would had scared the hell out of me but then there wouldn't had been much time to explain as to why she got there in the first place. The second one now should be creepier since now would be a continuation to the first one and the introduction had already been made. Its kinda like the games Silent Hill didn't get extremely awesome till the third installment.

They should really make it confusing, scary and creepy like the games, the first one was good but it didn't really have that feel in it.

I just watched the movie again and actually enjoyed it more. I can see that they were trying to keep the core of silent hill but changed the story a bit. I hope the 2nd does a good job of explaining and tie-in the first film. If I had my wish I would like to see a direct translation of the second game. The first film seemed to be a mesh of the first 2 games.

The best horror is comming back! Yeah! No, I don't think they died either, they ARE trapped inside one of the "auras" of Silent Hill however... But many people have been trapped and living there. Anyone who also read the (extremely good) comics know that, the artist from "Paint It Black" and that punk girl (she's soooo cute) are great examples of that.

  • NextStopEarth

    Posted Jul 3, 2007 12:27 pm PT

Why does everybody think they died in the movie??? THEY DID NOT DIE. If you think I'm wrong I point you to the fact that the director himself said they did not die.

I will be waiting for this!
I liked the first movie a lot, however a fan of the game series would feel the soundtrack -Brilliant indeed!- as a collage or a re-built (I'm not mocking or underestimating that work (I love it!), just trying to express the feeling I got as a huge fan of the game). A thing that I dislike was that fanatic witch-hunter behavior of the inhabitants of Silent Hill, also there were too much people, it was something different compared with that feeling of loneliness that surrounds the games.
Hope this movie keep the good work (even improve it) of the first, and avoid falling into The Abyss and join disappointing game- based movies like Mario Bros or Resident Evil.

yeah the first Silent Hill movie captured the Silent Hill atmosphere pretty well, despite what the critics say (critics don't know crap, I'm willing to bet there was not one film critic in the world that played a Silent Hill game before reviewing that movie). The pyramid-head sequence (almost) gave me nightmares. I hope the second movie lives up to the first.

I thought the first Silent Hill movie was brilliant. The complex plot fit in with the games riddle based play style. It made you think about what was happening, trying to reason through the plot. I found it very rich, not exactly a horror, just a long creepy Metaphor about the after life. The acting was good enough to excuse my critical side. The costumes kicked ***. And just like the games, the plot did not end happily, more or less leaving you feeling sorrow for the main characters. I still debate with myself over what exactly the plot was over, Silent Hill was Heaven and Hell~ at the end they were able to leave, the idea suggests a Purgatory. But there was no strong closure. Just like the game, leaving you mind F***ed contemplating everything. Beautifully done, i hope the second follows game number 2's plot line more, that was always my favorite.

That is a good news for Slient Hill fans ^^ In the next Slient Hill movie hope to see the actor will kill some moster with a pipe or something else i mean make it just like in the game not only run away like the first movie. The first movie is great cos it really bring us the world of Slient Hill to real.

Silent Hill the movie was good, but i was kind of hoping for a happy ending not - oops she dead.

It would be great if they made the next silent hill movie more like the first silent hill game or even the second, where the movie is more linear and not just short sections of confusion. And where you dont have to wonder if the characters are dead/alive/insane.

I think Im going to have to agree with Darknights assumptions and take on the new silent hill. "Video game movies" really have no choice but to have a seperate plot from the games. The price of following something written to the tee or closely based on the story incurrs a lot of royalties. Until they become public, movies really wont drive into them unless they have a serious budget. Aside from all that rambeling; I thought Silent HIlls camera work and atmosphere were true to the game and thats what I look forward to the most in SH2. And I would expect a plot line similar to the one described below by DarkKnight. I for one am stoked and support it; orginal director or no. On Onimusha im sure the main actor(s) we be in the movie, as they have no "busy" current career as far as I know it. The story also possesses a strong and intresting Japenese folklore that I think would breathe some life into America's movie scene! I cant wait to see both!

I think this has a good chance of being a good movie.
It would be cool if they made it a whole new story like that of the 2nd Silent Hill game where they diverted from the god stuff, but tehn tehy'd need to make a 3rd to answer the questions of the first so that might not be a good idea anymore ^_^
    I would watch it! -_^

hope they dont do like in resident evil....like creating a sequel to the movie and not being based on the games but on the movie, cuz by changing the movie's end like that they cant make the sequel like silent hill 3 (the sequel to SH1), they'll have to make a new story and that bugs me.....

Silent hill, a series that was very mysteries and phenominal for its own aspects, i mean in silent hill 1, you entered a town, a town that was grey and white, full of a sacred darkness and a sin that haunted, and as you proceed though the game, the aspects you once believed usualy shaped into another belief, like for an example as i mentioned you start in a grey, lifeless town, then you later on find the evil behind it as the sin covers the town into a darkness of pure death and sorrow. Its amazing i thought the game besides its lack of graphics and technology for the time being, was overall a 9/10 in my book. Silent hill 2, even tho this game was greatly off topic, it supported the movie as well, by useing a refrence from "pryamid Head" a demon you went thoughout the game, who haunt you as you proceeded though it, but you were never able to kill it, it was like a type of gate keeper or gurdian of some sort, but besides that fact, you later realize it has something great to do with silent hill ::::SPOILERS:::: you acculy realize that in silent hill 2 you killed your wife, and these creatures are somewhat of a representation, but besides that the game was off the main storyline, it was more of another life in the town of silent hill, but in silent hill 3, you explore the game with a Female known as Heather, who is the non biological daughter of the man who you play as in silent hill 1, this game follows up upon the accual ending of the story line for silent hill, but in silent hill 4, it explains another sequence of a story as it did in number 2, the seriues did that one primary story, but it had other brances that reached out as you viewed in silent hill 2 and 4, and most likely in silent hill 5, but to get a bit off topic, origions will feature the past events before silent hill realy took place with the 1st story so it may be in depth with number 1 a bit.

In other words, i feel silent hill 2 the movie, due to the ending in silent hill 1, (as you saw rose and her daughter enter the house of Actor Sean Bean, he sences a presence of someone in the house, but realizes theres no one there, which basicly screamed "SEQUEAL") i presume that, Sean bean will probly be in it, and somehow believe that his wife and kid are still existent even tho they both died in that car accident, so i believe that sean bean will proceed to silent hill, and encounter a hell of his own, and he will take up upon these demons, i feel that he probly will end up meeting them in some form, and he will realize there fate, but this movie i hope will definatly show more of the true face of silent hill, and acculy take time doing it, not run into the movie with an ideah in mind and rushing though everything, if they corrected this it would be much better, but silent hill 2, you should except a compelling story line such as this, and hopefully except it to have the nightmare aspect it so boldy expressed thoughout the series.

I think the first movie was pretty good but hard to follow. Events all took place way too fast. I've only played the first game and thought that was pretty damn awesome too and the movie should have the same effect. I know the film should've been really disturbing but I wasn't grossed out by it. I've seen too many disturbing films, I want films that make you think and solve some puzzle. I'm a big fan of Resident Evil and am just starting getting into the Silent Hill game series cause it's freakin awesome I'm sure. I've read allot about it, I just need a new XBOX or a Playstation 2 or 3.
