Ubisoft's Ninja Turtles emerge from the shadows

Publisher's French-Canadian studios set to bring film-based TMNT game to small screens next March.

In January, Ubisoft announced that it had secured the rights to make games based on the upcoming movie adaptation of the indie-comic-turned-late-'80s-kids'-fad Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Nearly a year later, the publisher has finally dropped some details on the project.

Set to release ahead of the movie next spring, the game is being developed at Ubisoft's Montreal and Quebec City studios on the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and PC. No mention was made of a PlayStation 3 version of the game. The publisher is promising a diverse group of adversaries pulled from both the movie and the original comics and environments designed around acrobatic navigation (something Ubisoft should be familiar with after developing the Prince of Persia series).

"The TMNT movie is all about the emotions associated with family and teenage angst," said Nick Harper, the game's creative director. "We've taken that philosophy and turned it into gameplay mechanics that will be fun and challenging."

One aspect of the game in which the familial theme will be played up is in the collaborative team-ups. The turtles will use each other's assistance to pummel their foes as well as to gain access to new areas.

The TMNT game is set for release March 13 of next year, with the movie it's based on arriving in theaters on March 23. The game has not yet been rated or priced.

if this game becomes another beat em' up, like konami's outstanding work (sarcasm) then i don't think ubisoft get any problem taking the game of the year award (more sarcasm) !

Wow, you guys really are some graphics whores. If I can get some fluid, close-quarters, hand-to-hand melee combat, I don't care what any individual frame of animation looks like.

Seven-on-one fight sequences? Sounds like a good use of multicore datapaths to me.

So it's not based on the OLD motion pictures? Come on man, those rocked. Especially the one with Super Shredder

I think that when a game is made for the both generations of consoles it always stays limited to the previous-gen (PS2, GC, in the case). So we'll won't see a game with the status of last-gen how it would be if it has been made exclusive for the last-gen consoles.

When UBI launched Prince Of Persia there wasn't any movie launching together, I guess this gives a great difference on the final result

Let's see how it'll be.. by the pictures the characters looks ugly, but the scenarios has some good textures and effects of light.

Is Michelangelo flying with the nunchakus?

Well i'd rather we be called Quebeckers too, but its not a question of racism or anything, i mean they call Ontarians Ontarians not "english canadians living next to french canadians" O.o ... And just to point out that Quebec is not the only Province with french talking canadians ... so the term french canadians used to describe Quebeckers is not really precise. Its like saying north americans when u want to talk about mexicans O.o ... which would be weird since canadians and americans also live in north america.

Anyway personaly i liked the tmnt on nes cant remember which ones i liked though i think there where 3 or 4 and i liked only 1 of them. The snes one is really fun too throwing the Footies in the screen was great .... i bought the last tmnt on ps2 only to play that snes game again with my Bro. Sweet stuff.

P.S: Didnt know that many Quebekers actually used those forums!!!! I feel less lonely lol.

I would really love a proper TMNT game, but i dont really belive that this is it...

I on the other hand think otherwise. Acrobatics like a prince of persia game would rock. Only time can tell but these screenshots aren't looking too good.

I'm QUEBECOIS and I don't find it INSULTING to be called a French Canadian.
it's psychos like you who give the rest of us a bad name! No wonder the rest of the country hates us LOL.

seriously, the whole SEPARIST thing is soooooo 1980s, it's not even funny.

I guess it's a propos, considering this news item is about 80s cult cartoon TMNT.

those graphics look horrendous. seriously, apart from TMNT THE ARCADE GAME, almost all of the Turtles games have sucked donkey. Konami should just make an HD version of that classic, with nice, sharp, polygonal graphics but with the original 2D gameplay, and sell THAT on XBLA.

man, that'll be the day! I guess nice UPDATES to oldies (as opposed to quick cash-in ports) are just too good to be true.

  • wackoss

Why not just make a Dynasty Warriors Clone?

The Turtle's look too skinny I think they should have more girth and thicker limb's.
Their shell's should add some bulk to them and they must be fairly heavy so they should have thicker arm's and leg's .
Carrying the weight of their shell's while doing flip's kick's & such should give them some pretty good strength.
I have only seen the 2 shot's so far but I hope these are'nt the final character model's.
THey look ok but as I said I think they should be a little bulkier
