Interplay planning Fallout MMO game

Long-dormant publisher files "confidential" information about proposed $75 million project with Securities and Exchange Commission.

While Fallout fans are looking toward Bethesda Softworks' upcoming Fallout 3 as the future of the franchise, original publisher Interplay has resurfaced from a lengthy hibernation with plans for a massively multiplayer online game based on the property.

Late last month, Interplay made a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission and noted that it would be spending the first half of December meeting with European investors and giving them a slide-show presentation of its current activities. In the slide show, which Interplay labeled "confidential," is a plan for a Fallout MMO game to start production as early as next month.

To get the game through its proposed July 2010 launch, Interplay is projecting that it will need a total of $75 million. Few details were given, but the publisher did note that it would be a subscription-based game and that it was expected to provide a return on investment within three years. Interplay projects that the game would be profitable in its second year with revenues of $160 million, assuming it could garner 1 million subscribers in its first year.

    Holy ...........!!!! They really know what the fans want. At least its not gonna happen the same thing with Oblivion that everyone wanted a MMO for it.

    Man I can't wait for this. I hope that it's like the old-school fallout that got me addicted to the series. I really want to see how this turns out as an MMO. andI want another Fallout game.

    FO3 was disapointing, so I'll wait this game to be the true sequel to fallout 2.

    Isn't 75million a little high? Aren't they bankrupt and facing a bunch of litigation? Isn't the company currently only made up of the two guys who founded it? How could this possibly be anything other than an attempt to get someone to inadvertently bail them out under the ruse of development another product?

    Well it's a pipe dream if they have no employees & are bankrupt or near bankruptcy. I'm for any post-apocalyptic MMO coming out. It
    doesn't have to be Fallout. Hopefully someone is working on one
    that will be out before 2010! That's too long to wait.

    Unlike many other Fallout fans I'm rather worried that the game won't live up to my high expectations and turns out as a big disappointment if it's ever going to be released that is.I don't think I'll be far from truth saying the majority of people responsible for making both Fallout games so great is no longer on Interplay pay-roll.Maybe it's just my post-apocalyptic thinking but as someone before said : seeing is believing .Until that time there's only you and the wasteland.

    No one seems to understand: THIS GAME IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

    Interplay is bankrupt, with dozens of pending lawsuits against them, many from former employees who went unpaid for several months before getting laid off. No one works for Interplay anymore. It is two guys - the founders.

    Go to interplay.com. There are no links for job postings. There are only links to SEC filings. The news story does not anywhere say they've RECEIVED $75 million from any backer to fund this project.

    Everybody just breathe deeply and say to yourself, "There is no Fallout MMO in the works; it is a hoax perpetrated by some shady corporate executives in an attempt to secure a bunch of funding, use it to settle their lawsuits, and then bail out."

    Gee wiz this could be either dream come true or one hell of a letdown if they don't get it right. I thought Interplay didn't exist anymore. Aren't all the best at other houses now? How can they possibly keep the sordid atmosphere of post-apocalyptic life without coming under immediate attack from the anti-violence crowd? Fallout 3, sure, but an MMO? Geez they've got balls. If they get this one right, they'll be legendary.

    2010... I don't know if I'm even gonna live that long, jeesh. Anyway, in 2010 Fallout will be but a distant memory, unless Fallout 3 comes out and becomes very popular before the MMO.

    Regardless a Fallout MMO would be great. I wish that more info would be released about Fallout 3, cause.... well explainations over the need for a new Fallout are unneccsery. But the possiblities for a Fallout MMO are endless as long as they get it right and theey better, otherwise I'll be pissed. I love WoW and I hope they can at least get near that.

    The MMO's success depends on if the subscribers actually care about their children enough to say "No, you can't play this." WoW has plenty of 15 or younger 'players' in the mix, which is something that the fallout universe won't achieve if the parents pay attention. (however, the likelyhood that the parents WON'T pay attention and the government will blame it on interplay, is very high).

    WoW has skills like 'hemmorage' and 'death coil,' which by appearance look humble, but in description are freaking nasty. The rogue skills sound especially nasty, but nobody cares because they don't LOOK nasty.

    If the Fallout MMO brings the actual visual violence, sex, and drugs to the scenario, then it's going to get a lot more attention than the others, and not all of it good.

    If Fallout goes MMO, I'm not neccessarily worried about the game itself (though it probably isn't going to stay turn-based if it does go MMO). I'm worried about the COMMUNITY. A truckload of players are going to subscribe to it because 'it's so hip.' Why not switch from fantasy to sci-fi/post apoc? It's the cool thing to do!

    It's going to bring a ton of absolute morons over to interrupt the actual flow of an otherwise immersive and darkly violent game, and you'll actually be able to see the idiocy in a coherent and almost physical form.

    "LOOKING 4 CAR POWER CELL PST, WILL PAY 4K MONIES"

    "LFG FOR RANDOM ENCOUNTERS, MUST HAVE MINIGUN FOR DEATHCLAW FARMING"

    "HEAVY ARMS USER WILL RUN NEWBS THROUGH MILITARY BASE, HAVE POWER ARMOR, 2K"

    This could be done right if playing for a faction accomplished something instead of just building yourself up. For example if you play for NCR, and if enough people successfully accomplish missions for it, then its borders expand. Same thing for other cities. Have your raiders go from 2 bit highwaymen to full fledged raiders to taking over a city and becoming ruler of a city state...theres soooo much there to look into.

    The element that really endured Fallout to me, was that my character seemed like such a ray of hope in a bleak wasteland. There was apathy, prostitution, drug use, child murderers, slavery and Miron. I cant imagine that any developer could make a game with this mature theme for an Online game shooting for a million subscribers. I also am a big fan of "dying". Without the horrible permamency of wholesale slaughter...heck, why fight the bandits if they just respawn. Heck, why even shoot Miron.

    they still need to draw away people from Ultima and EQ 1 and Asheron's call. I love Fallout and the industry is to packed with generic fantasy, I want scifi dammit. I want to run around dressed like the "Road Warrior" armed with a laser gatling gun and driving a car with a giant roter blade in front of it.

    I just hope they take advantage of the skills that have been overlooked in the game (mechanic, scientist,) like to see how they incorporate talking skills (I am positive they can't) and do a better job then the first atempt Anarchy.

    I have a hard time thinking that a Fallout MMO would secure 1 million constant subscribers. As much as I love the franchise, I just don't think I would want to play in a persistent Fallout world.

    I just want another traditional Fallout game, not WoW with Radscorpions.

    They could do it. Fallout has a huge cult following....like Earthbound, for example.

    I see no reason why it couldn't....there's more than enough fans that are craving new Fallout gameplay.

    The market is saturated with MMORPG's now...
    Most barely get off the 500,000 subcribers mark

    Only the big boys can pull of those numbers (World of Warcraft, Guild Wars and a couple more), they entered the market when the time was right.

    The other problem I see here is that Interplay doesnt have any devlopment facilties now, as they closed shop.(Other than selling Licenses to other comapnies such as Bethesda). I assume the $75 million would be needed to hire a new place to work anbd staff etc. Either that or they could outsource the project. Either way I dout investors would back this deal considering Interplays recent history.

    This is a great idea and hope they can pull it off. Have often thought that the Fallout universe would make one great MMO. Has built in factions and unlimited amount of content that could be added if done right. Make it a perma-pvp "on" game and it would be really great!

    Interplay doesn't have $75Million, and I don't think anybody would be stupid enough to give them it. Thats a ton of money to give a company who hasn't made a profitable game since the '90s. Even if they get part of the funding, Interplay will screw up big time. The last time they faced a money crisis they turned to making cheap, bad console games in favor of proven PC franchises. They think ideas will make you money with out regard to quality.

    I have my doubts, especially if it sounds good......

    The MMOnline market is saturated as it is; only standouts like Guild Wars (no monthly fee) and World of WarCraft (WarCraft Universe) are currently holding their own. If this game EVEN has a lame word-out, $7.5 million will go missing.......
