Sony talks PS3 improvements, PS4 timetable

Exec tells Aussie tech site that the electronics giant will make another console after 2010; PS3 will see system upgrades, new peripheral support.

Late last month, executive shake-ups at Sony prompted one Japanese analyst to make a bold prediction: Sony was moving out of the gaming-hardware business and focusing solely on software. "I cannot now imagine a PlayStation 4," said Nomura Securities' Yuta Sakurai.

Sony was quick to rebut the claim, with a rep telling GameSpot, "I think it would be rather shortsighted for anyone to predict there might not be a next generation of PlayStation product."

As for when to expect a new Sony console, one exec claims that the company's fans shouldn't expect the next PlayStation any sooner than the typical console life cycle allows. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe vice president of technology Paul Holman reportedly told Australian tech site Smarthouse that Sony will launch a PlayStation 4, but not any sooner than 2010.

Until then, Sony will continue to upgrade the PlayStation 3 through firmware updates that will allow "for the introduction of third-party applications and hardware such as interactive controllers similar to Nintendo's Wii..." the site reported. The PS3's current controller, the Sixaxis, already has motion- and tilt-sensing capability.

The PS3 may also come with a keyboard and mouse in the future, be able to download third-party operating systems, and become "as much a media center for the home as it is a gaming machine," said Holman. His words echo statements made by Sony executives that the PS3's online store will offer downloadable music and video content, much like iTunes and Xbox Live Marketplace currently do.

Requests for comment from Sony were unanswered as of press time.

    I think the ps4 will only come out 2015/2016. It would be pointless for Sony to release a new console when they've just started making a profit on the ps3. The console that should be updated is the xbox 360

    I would wait for 2078 for PlayStation 9. The PS9 has improved retinal scanning, a mind control system, holographic surround vision, and telepathic personal music.

    I wouldn't want next gen to start until 2012 or so because I want to fully enjoy all of the this gen consoles first before I move on because that would suck if like in 2010 I would have to buy the next Nintendo console when I already got a Wii...I would be like WTF?!

    @Vividnightmare Hang on a second you got me laughing hysterically, are you saying the PS3 was shipped before it was ready, and judging by your statements your a xbot troll...so you might want to take another look at your console of choice for unreliability before you come after its reliable rival. I've had my PS3 for like 3 years now with no problems whatsoever hasn't had to be shipped in for overheating or any repairs of any sort.
    I'm betting you won't see a duplicate of that claim with 360 subbed in for PS3, and if you do 10/10 times it will be faulty. lol.

    wow i probably will buy a ps4 but I might wait a while after it comes out. it will probably be cheaper a few months after its release date.

    shish, u guys why rush for a ps4 i have my ps3 for only about only 2 years i want to buy PS4 not earlier than 2012 or even 13 .. it's a waist of money+++~~~~ i mean loook at the diference between ps2 and ps3 it was more than 3 years..

    I can see it now, Windows XP on the PS3. Now you can play your favorite Windows based PC games on your PS3... hell if they advertised that I would actually buy a PS3 so I could play Crysis lol. as for the slimlines sure of course they do, Sony is the ULTIMATE money sucker, they will do anything to screw their fans over a little more. They don't respect their customers they just look at them like lemmings, whatever they can take from them they will. as for this 'untapped' power thing, it's bull, the cell is just like the emotion chip. It was rushed through development and then thrown in the system... it's suppost to have 9 cores, but do you know that only 6 cores are requires to operate for it to ship for sale? Not to mention the massive RAM bottle neck which they WILL NOT FIX. You know how stupid they would look if they released RAM upgrade? Pay 600 bucks for the system so sony can charge you another 200 to upgrade the ram... wait, no.. that would rip off customers, never mind they will probably come up with yearly upgrades now.

    There will most likely be a Xbox 3 first. 2010 is my guess. At the same time a Playstation 3 Slimline. Sony always releases a slim version of it's consoles. PS/PS2/PSP. Not exactly a "New" console.

    The PS3 is really a PC in a way. Heck you can even put Linux on it. The PS3 has untapped power that will make the games we play on it in 2011 make the games we have now look like PS2 games

    I foresee a RAM expansion module for the PS3 sometime, witth the cheap price of flash RAM and the solid state drives that are out now, its only a matter of time. Just imagine GTA IV with 2 to 3 times the RAM.

    i hope next gen consoles come out on 2018 cause i need to some time to play on my ps3.new 360 will be launched on 2012.new wii might be launched next year and new ps3 will be launched after atleast 10 years as they said on sonys press confrence.good thing ive got time to play games on ps3.

    Sony will launch a PlayStation 4, but not any sooner than 2010. then in that case ps3 be good for only 2 years then. hell its 2008 now
    which Im sure the price would be 199.00 in 2 years so ps4 come out.
    sony should have waited for ps4 for a high priced console. Im sure ps4 would be worth 800-900.00 with life-like graphic

    Graphics can only get so realistic looking it is possible to have a ps9 because they could make the graphics look the best they can and still come out with new things to play with like more motion sensing things.

    I doubt PS9 will have virtual reality graphics, i'm getting a wii and sony stinks anyway :\ and u know wt has the best graphics ever?

    I'm sure that there won't be a PS9.Three PS cosoles are out and the PS3 has got almost real enough graphics. If thre would be a PS9, it's graphics will look like...well "beyond humanity" graphics.

    To be honest, i spent $599.00 plus tax....etc...on the ps3 i plan to make sure i get ten yrs out of it reguardless if a ps4 comes out after dealing with what we have fro games. I am not in no rush for any new ps4 4 yrs from now!!! All i want back is the rumble controller so now they Sony&emerison has closed its suite time to bring it back plzzzz....................

    sony and microsoft should gang up on nintendo pwn nintendo then split and become brother companies. and i had this playatation magazien listing all playstations from 1 to 10. and i especially remember #10 being a bubble device you wear and can connect to thousands of players in massive world size maps that would be cool. but if you think about it the human race has another trillion years ahead enough to make such things and even better. HD psp's, fully interactive everything, games/videos/music/photos/smells/emotions/teleporter/huge multiplayer. in a good prcie range

    Well dude who paid 600 bucks 4 pS3 , U r lucy we here in UK have 2 pay 430 quid which makes it bout 800 bucks 4 the bloody console.
    As 4 my opinion PS3 was released 2 quick , 2 many delays played on the fans feelings , 2 high prices. And the hardware which is going to be last gen in 1-2years.
    Hardly anyone can show me a game that would make me say Yeh thats a NEXT GEN.

    It's not like few years, their saying it won't happen sooner than 2010. so it will be somewhat between 2010 and 2020! my guess is 2015 But heck, anything can happen, as also MS wants to launch the xbox 720(or whatever the name) also around 2010

    Perhaps it won't even be called PS, I thought I've read this somewhere but Sony wants to get a bit out of that "unserious" gaming industry and more into somethings more serious. So perhaps by the time they would've released ps9 it would be moreless a computer...
