Reggie: Nintendo will meet Wii targets

Nintendo of America's president says company is on course to sell its target 4 million Wiis worldwide by year's end.

For Nintendo, it's 600,000 down and 3,400,000 to go. On Tuesday, the company announced that it had sold 600,000 Wiis in the console's first eight days in retail. Nintendo had declined to say how many consoles it would have available for the North American launch but did project that 4 million units would be available worldwide by the end of 2006.

Though moving more than 3 million units in a month seems like a daunting task, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says the company is on track to meet its projection.

"All systems are go for reaching the 4-million target we have in our financials by December 31," Fils-Aime told Reuters. The outspoken exec appears to be a believer in the "If you build it, they will come" mantra. "We will sell everything we make, so now it's simply a manufacturing thing."

The Wii made its debut in North America on November 19. It goes on sale in Japan on December 2 and in Europe on December 8.

    Same. Nintendo is doing an excellent job. I love playing with my Wii. LOL Now, if we can get Nintendo to release Virtual Console titles we actually want....

    That's cool. See Sony give the gamers what they want. You make more consoles to sell more consoles. This really doesn't effect me too much just because I got mine on launch day. But it's nice to see Nintendo making more consoles.

    Try looking at the facts I have listed in my BLOG before you accuse me (Not to mention my library)). I dont' even intend to own one of these consoles at the moment (still waiting for some fast paced action game to win me over). Better yet, search Google for PS3 and Xbox 360 Middleware specs, you'll find them listing around 10 Million polys per second (pps hereafter) for each. According to developers, the top tier current gen games did 5 million pps, but most games were floating at around 1 million, cross platform.

    Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube was, according to Capcom, a 3 million pps game and on the PS2 a 900k pps game. Even the Dreamcast can beat the PS2 in image quality, thanks to being able to display bigger and higher color textures, and 1st gen Dreamcast games were also running at 3 million polys per second. So I don't know how you can think the Gamecube isn't better as well, since you talk about the games being the most important measuring stick. Then again, anybody who accuses another person of being a fanboy for calling them on presenting an opinion as fact would think this way.

    it's not possible to sell 4 million units in just 30 days. if you just look at the math, xbox 360 has been out for a year and it has only sold 6 million copies and imagine selling 4 million in much less than half of that time

    My friend was able to get one the day after Thanksgiving and I got mine on launch day. I'm sure that if you ask around and don't mind doing a lot of searching you'd be able to get one soon.

    Phazevariance - I definately agree that a lot of the launch titles for the PS3 are pretty lame and I would also agree that the 360 is off to a pretty slow start (there are not that many GREAT games for it... really just Gears of War, which just came out.) I would also agree that the Wii is of to a fantastic start and will only continue to get better... the Wiimote is great! But, I wouldn't write off the 360 and PS3 out of hand. Gears of War alone should show you what the games are capable of in the future. Granted, you may not be into shooters, but the game shows how far you can go with the console and there is still more to be learned about coding for multi-cored processors. I would also agree wholeheartedly that good graphics != good gameplay, but it is usually a good measurement of how much time was spent developing a game. Graphics alone could never make a game, but if they spent the time to develop a powerful engine, you would hope they'd spend the time to make it worth playing on that engine. Games will probably take longer to come out on the 360 and PS3 than the Wii, given that Wii developers don't have to focus on the graphical side of the engine as long, but I wouldn't say they can't be good.

    I believe they need to start shipping more units to the so called "Americas" if they are in deed meeting their target 4 Mil. Have not seen any more units anywhere I looked. Probably they have a card up their sleeve. If they can dish out some where from 1 to 1.5 Mil in Japan, and another .6 in Europe they will not be too far off.

    rockybob - You are right about the dual shock starting on the PS1 only it didn't become mainstream until PS2.

    nappan - I personally feel Nintendo 'should' have upped the capabilities of their graphics a bit, but in no way would I say it's a bad system in any way. Zelda looks very nice and has a HUGE world, but that again is a gamecube PORT. With that in mind, Zelda's world makes GTA:SA world look tiny already, why would you need streamed worlds? If they can fit the Zelda universe on a 4gb disc and the Wii now uses 9gb discs, I think they have lots of room to make huge worlds without streaming. You argued that more power = better graphics AND better AI, well, the Wii doesnt use HD due to it's video card power, the CPU power is still able to top xbox1 by far, and realistically the Wii 'could' support 720p on it's games, however they for some reason decided to lock it to 480, seeing as xbox1 which is less powerful even had 720 output. My point is, the games coming out for ps3 and 360, when I play them, i feel like i've played them before, because it's nothing new. I've been playing games for over 20 years, and lately I have this boredom when playing most of them. They don't seem as interesting as they used to, and thats because its the same thing over and over again. Graphics do not equal good gameplay. Again, GRAPHICS != GOOD GAMEPLAY.

    nappan it will just be a better looking version of gta on the ps2 the gameplay will be the same but i dont think they will be that much longer because the bigger the game the longer it takes to make and debug.and it allready cost alot of money to make a tripple a game in hd on the ps3 and 360 just look at gow looks great but not that long to beat and thats ms best game to date. and dont the wii and the 360 use regular dvds so the wii games can be just as long now the ps3 uses br so i know they can make there games longer and the wii games can be longer then ms games cause there on the same disk but nintendo games aint in hd ms games are so they take up more space on the dvd .on that note who care what the games look like afther the first ten minutes you forget about the graphics and the game play comes in and takes over and i had a 360 but sold it to get games for my wii and a reserve in gamestop on the 13 th of oct and to tell you the truth i dont even miss it . i been playing zelda and call of duty 3 and redsteel every night since i got it. my wife hates my wii more then she did my 360 shore she plays it to but she see how im just hook to the tv every night and i been running late to work lately in the morning.man im all most 30 and to tell you the truth i have not had this much fun since i first started playing games years ago in the 80s when the nes came out good job ninendo so far every one of my freinds that played my wii got one or are trying to find one. now i just need to learn to turn it off early so i can get up early but thats hard when your haveing fun im at work right now and i cant wait till i get home to play my wii and johnnyblaze some haze lol. i cant wait for metriod 3 so nintendo can show sony and ms how to do a real console fps cause to me fps are all ways better on pc but with the wiis interface and wiimote thats all going to change for the better

    250 is good for what you get. a Complete controller (like it or not, it IS expensive technology), the system, and a game (that has multiple games in one). Wii is for games, thats it. If you want a DVD player buy a 360 (which is good too) or a PS3.



    Technically, it isn't a failure when it is cheaper to produce than they are selling it for, and 600,000 is still good. Keep in mind that most of the great games aren't even here yet, not to mention the holiday season. The PS3 was an utter failure at launch, despite selling out, not many systems were available, and most sold went to eBay.

    That's simply not the case. The PS1 was the origination of the Dual Shock controller. Go pick up any PS2 controller and it will say "Dual Shock 2"... this is because it is the second generation Dual Shock which only added pressure sensitive buttons. It is indeed true that the PS1 didn't launch with a dual shock, but it was later added. So to suggest the PS2 added "2 more shoulder pads and an analog stick" is simply false.     That's almost exactly my point... the first part anyway. Better processors and graphics cards lead to better games in other ways than graphics; better physics, better AI and so on. At the end of the PS2 and Xbox's cycle, just about everything had been done that those systems were capable of. Systems designers were relying on solid storytelling and their name to sell products. With all the new consoles, each one has it's own pros and cons which will revitalize the gaming community. But to suggest a controller alone will do so, is pretty weak. I love the Wii and I hope there are great games for it in the future, so I can continue to have fun on it. However, I don't blindly follow Nintendo just because the foundation is there. It's going to take solid development of games for the system to really shine. All the next-gen consoles have the capability to really shine if developers really work at getting better games out. The 360 and PS3 can equally produce fun and enticing games the same as the Wii, they're just different consoles.

    As it stands right now I don't believe $250 is worth the price for what you get, or rather, what you don't get. It's not fair to judge a console solely on its launch games since historically launch games are never the strongest batch of titles a console will have. But I think that only serves to re-enforce my belief that $250 is too much for the Wii for what you got.

    No, I said that people who say with certainty what WILL happen are fools. I then proceeded to give my opinion, clearly stated as an opinion. "I personally THINK..." were the words I used, and I thought the all caps would make it clear. By the way, what am I a fanboy of? I've stated that if the Wii comes out with games I want to play, I'll buy it, I already own a 360, and once I'm confident the PS3 is bug free and some more games are out for it, I'll buy that too. I own a gaming PC and enjoy that as well. I am a pure gamer, in it for the games, and ONLY the games. I've played with the Wii a lot now and I'm just not amazed by it.

    I play games with interfaces, not interfaces to justify the games... Graphics don't make a game, but graphical and processor power can let a game become something MORE. Does anyone think that Rockstar won't make a killer GTA title with these new consoles? On the 360 or PS3 you could support streaming seamless worlds that make San Andreas look TINY... and that gets my blood pumping more than a motion sensing remote. Sorry Phaze, that's just how I feel. I know for others it isn't the case, and that's fine. My ideal game is a world to explore, full of things to do, with lush graphics and a loooong storyline that involves me. That draws me in more than the mario-party style of nintendo... but again I know the opposite is true for some. In the end, what gets you more into the game... a GTA-SA like world, only bigger and cleaner looking, or motion sensing? I know the answer for me, and I suppose each gamer will find out for themselves. If I'm a fanboy, it's a fanboy for the type of games that I love and the consoles that make them come alive... not the other way around.

    Quit crying about the price. Nintendo has offered systems for years at 199 at launch, so this is a fair increase. Making the system cheap but non profitable would have turned away 3rd party developers, which they desperately need. And if you think 250 is too much to spend, then wait for it to drop in price. And the people who have bought it have so far expressed almost 100% satisfaction with the console, so obviously Nintendo did things right.

Surely you won't claim such a small thing revolutionized gaming the way the analog stick did? I personally THINK that the Wii is going to lose even that small mainstream appeal the gamecube had with games like Resident Evil 4 because 3rd party blockbusters won't translate well (or at all), and time is going to play to the power and strength of the other two consoles, whereas innovative interfaces will only take you so far. I'm not saying the Wii won't be a success, because nintendo has MANY fans, and it does aim at a younger, lower spending demographic that MS and Sony simply are not aiming at. Nintendo lost the ability to capture the mainstream a long time ago, and instead of going under, they reached out to the gamers who were being ignored partially or completely by MS and Sony, and they survived. The evolution from GC to Wii shows that. That DOES mean the Wii isn't the powerhouse that the other two are, and it DOES mean that it's only "next-gen" in terms of it's interface... that doesn't make it a failure, but to nintendo fans and people in love with the Wii: understand that just doesn't cut it for people outside of Nintendo's target audience, and it never will. You see, what you failed to include is that most 3rd party developers more than likely WON'T port their games over to the Wii, they will instead make brand spanking new games specifically for the Wii, that CAN'T translate well over to the other systems. You will see games that use the pointing and motion sensing in new ways that aren't even tapped yet, that the other two systems can't even come close to replicating... graphics? who cares, I'm a hardcore gamer, and honestly, I've had more fun on Wii sports (the crappy throw in game that came with my Wii) than I've had with any game in a long time, and that is just the first game. Many more will come out, and many will use the controller in new ways.

Again, Sony and MS want their new systems to last for 10 years this generation, where as Nintendo will release a new console in 5 years as always, and it will by then be able to match ps3 and xbox in terms of graphics but by then they will be in second generation motion sensing, and will surpass the competition at that time. The DS which is basically a hand held dumbed down version of a Wii is now the #1 console in the UK even over PS2. Why? Better graphics? Nope, better style? nope, better games? maybe, but better gameplay and control scemes is wha really did it.

    Aww the williest of wankers...Well i must agree with what the guy below me said. The wii is a very ingenious product and the path nintendo is taking as far as going after the non-gamers is GENIUS. After reading some posts I would have to agree with most of what was said. I have a 360 and I am a graphics whore BUT games like Perfect dark zero and Oblivion only had about 1 or 2 hours worth of game time in my system. Games like windwaker and metroid and i'm sure the new zelda game would be something I would play til i finished it, regardless of how the graphics looked. I have to commend Nintendo on making a believer out of me. I won't be getting a wii just yet BUT once a couple more first party games come I will definitely be getting one to put next to my 360. I will skip out on the ps3 due to the price and the fact that I already have a 360. Seems like I am serving fresh crapitolo cakes to Sony, he he he.

    To the blind truth spoken by GWXgamer:

    I think you fail to see who Nintendo is after. The "Core Gamer" didn't make the PS2 the ubiquitous system that it is. There have been over 40 million PS2s sold world-wide, now what fraction of those owners are "Core Gamers"? It's really quite small. Even if there was not one core gamer who bought a Wii, I think there is a good chance the Wii will be a huge success. When you're shooting for tens of millions of users, you're shooting *way* beyond the core gamer.

    I spent Turkey Day having a laugh out loud Wii bowling tournament with 20 family members (ranging in age from 4-69). Everyone played, everyone laughed and had fun.

    We played on my 110" HDTV projection setup. Everyone checked out the PS3 graphics and thought they were really cool, but only the Core Gamers (4 out of 20) actually played it. However, no-one complained about the Wii graphics on the same setup (480p), and *everyone* played & loved it. That's exactly what Nintendo set out to do, and I have to say it was a brilliant plan that will almost certainly pay off. Congrats to Nintendo! (Oh, and I love my PS3 too, Resistance on a 110" screen at 720P is awesome as are Blu-Ray movies!)

It's one thing to discuss what we all THINK might be, or what we think will or won't work with each console, but to claim knowledge of such is stupidity. I personally THINK that the Wii is going to lose even that small mainstream appeal the gamecube had with games like Resident Evil 4 because 3rd party blockbusters won't translate well (or at all), and time is going to play to the power and strength of the other two consoles, whereas innovative interfaces will only take you so far. I'm not saying the Wii won't be a success, because nintendo has MANY fans, and it does aim at a younger, lower spending demographic that MS and Sony simply are not aiming at. Nintendo lost the ability to capture the mainstream a long time ago, and instead of going under, they reached out to the gamers who were being ignored partially or completely by MS and Sony, and they survived. The evolution from GC to Wii shows that. That DOES mean the Wii isn't the powerhouse that the other two are, and it DOES mean that it's only "next-gen" in terms of it's interface... that doesn't make it a failure, but to nintendo fans and people in love with the Wii: understand that just doesn't cut it for people outside of Nintendo's target audience, and it never will.

    If that was directed at me, I don't care if Sony didn't. I am perfectly fine with waiting until sometime next year to get my PS3. I am not one of those people who must have a system at its launch.

    What I don't think most of the people posting here understand is that the Wii will sell beyond hotcakes in Japan. Sure, its popular in the US and is selling out everywhere, but in Japan it will be at the very least 10x as popular. Look at the DS Lite - it came out in April/May and it's still sold out everywhere in Japan! The Wii will be the same way. The Wii has a very Japanese flavor to it, and it is the Nintendo system that Japanese gamers have been waiting for. The Wii will remain popular in the US, but we haven't seen anything in Japan (and Europe) yet. I think Reggie is right about this one - whatever qualtity of Wiis Nintendo ships this year, they will sell all of them.

    You should stop living in your Sony-Soft dream honestly. You really have no idea wth you just said. Call me a fanboy or w/e you want, but the truth is, Xbox360 has been out for a year now, and if Wii sales and demand keep up this pace and they meet target, in 1 year or less they will achieve everything Xbox360 has done and will do. You said it, CORE gamers do want new tech that's why they will get a PS3 instead of 360 cause it's better. The point you skipped, Wii isn't designed for the CORE gamer, instead, it's taking a different approach to the whole family and new players like the DS did. What you said about the DS and PSP is wrong, DS sales outsale even the PS2 and it has N64 graphics. UMD is cool but isn't the future, it's just another minidisc failed attempt. There isn't even a UMD player for the movies, and word is 3rd party developers are already stopping production of games for the PSP. the Gamecube alone is outselling the 360 at japan, and if it's true that gamers want new tech. the gamecube is better in every aspect compared to the PS2. Gamers don't want nice HD graphics cause most gamers CAN'T afford a HDTV and a highly overpriced gaming console. Gamers want Games. Ill take zelda anytime instead of Elders Scrolls no matter how pretty or ugly it looks. Simply put it this way, you don't like the wii? Don't like the graphics? Don't like the games? Well guess what, nintendo doesn't care, cause if you don't buy the console, someone else will for you. And trust me, lot's of people want it more than the PS3.
    P.S. Sixaxis IS a gimmicky product.

    Well of course they will hit their numbers they set, the Wii has old hardware in it. If Sony had equally old hardware in their system, they'd hit the numbers they originally announced too!

    you guys are retarted.....why do people that are all in to the same thing always attack each other? there are lots of people who think gamers are stupid period,and all this b.s. just supports their claim. every system has something different to appeal to different gamers,that's why there's more than one system. reggie said he can't even compare the wii to ps3 or 360 cause they're going in a different direction,which they are. i see down the road them adding more sensors to detect what every limb on the body is doing,that would be great,really more vr than anything else. 360 though,is a great system too....where does every badass game for the pc debut??????? oh yeah,the xbox/360. plus,their games just keep looking better and you don't have to have the best hdtv to see their great graphics. they also have a large selection of games now,not just 8 or 9,and you can find some used copies for less,not every game is 59.99. ps3 will rule a year from now when they have more games and work out all the bugs. sux that without the best hdtv the graphics fall short. i say all that to say this- instead of bashing each others systems why not share with each other? my friends and i have fun playing whatever system were on and don't criticize each others choice of system.....they're all great to me,it's cool to have so many badass consoles to try out....i just wish i had more time to enjoy them all..
