PS3 system updated to 1.11

Second firmware update for Sony's new game console now available--but its contents remain a mystery.

With little fanfare, Sony has released the first update for the PlayStation 3 following the console's North American launch--version 1.10 was released near the console's Japanese launch. Firmware version 1.11 can now be downloaded through the PS3's System Update feature.

Most gamers like to know what they're getting before they tinker with their consoles, but this time they'll have to use a little blind faith. Though the update is readily available to download on the console, Sony has not sent out any information on the patch. As of press time, the Sony PlayStation Web site's information on the latest update was for v1.10, and requests for comment from the electronics giant went unanswered.

GameSpot editors updated a PS3 but could not see any visible differences to the console's system or performance.

Various reports around the Internet claim the update adds an Account Management icon in the friends list, making it easier to access the feature. But all may not be well with the update. Game blog Kotaku reports postupdate lockups after accessing Music settings.

[UPDATE] A representative from Sony Computer Entertainment America contacted GameSpot and confirmed the update's main addition is the Account Management option under the Friends section of the media bar.

Actually Zeroni, GS ran a previous news article saying that Sony would replace the battery. However, no word as of yet about how much it would cost to send in your controller to get the battery replaced by Sony. But Sony did say that the battery could be sent in to them to be replaced should it fail.

That means that when the pad's battery runs out, you'll have to buy a new pad instead of a new battery. Smart move, Sony... Another smart move... sony say theyll last for 5-6 by that time ps4 wil come out

    To GsR_lives:

Sony will prevent any treat to the "GameOS" (or "Cell OS"), including any homebrew. If they need to update the PS3's firmware every day, they will.

If you want to put any homebrew software into PS3, Sony gives you the option to put Linux into PS3. No need to "hack", no need to "unlock a homebrew exploit" into the hardware/Cell OS.

Linux on PS3 don't have any access of the Cell OS -it "runs" on top of Cell OS but in a restricted and controled environment, so you can do whatever you want in your Linux partition without worrying about destroying your game data or saves, music, pictures, you name it-. That's the only restriction that Sony put into Linux/Cell OS: No "Other OS" can access/modify Cell OS's partition.

When in Linux "mode", you can run emulators and whatever software Linux has. it's your choice. Why would I ever try to "hack" the Cell OS when I can program with ease (and no "Sony Restrictions") in a complete computer environment like Fedora Linux or (soon to be free) Yellow Dog Linux?

Sony support homebrew on PS3, but ONLY on Linux NOT on Cell OS.

    I hope this help.

The PS3 still seems unfinsihed to me and a great deal seems to hinge on gamers having broadband internet access to access firmware updates. I know the 360 does the same thing and so does the Wii but this might just be a flaw aswell as an asset in console manufacturers's plans. There are gamers buying these systems who never intend to go online and if they don't have access to the firmware updates they are stuck with buggy systems. One of my best friends bought the 20 gig Model PS3 last week and it was funny when it wouldn't even play DVDs out of the box until he connected it to his broadband setup and the first thing it did was a firmware update. I can understand these updates later but not day one that's bad planning. And I know Nintendo had an update aswell and MS is always updating. Adding new functionality is one thing but rushing out unfinished work says to consumers that the industry may have started a bad trend and they might be seeing a great deal more consoles sooner or later destroyed by firmware incompatibility---as a few Wiis have been by one of Nintendo's updates and some Xbox360s have been by a rescent Microsoft's firmware update a few weeks ago. It's funny that in past generations we gamers didn't have to worry about things like this and now we do. It's a little too risky for me.

This might be Sony's way of preventing pirated games for the ps3.... they did the same thing for the psp where you can use the earlier version of the psp firmware to put emulators and iso dumpers so I imagine they are trying to prevent that on the ps3... eitherway I want to get a ps3. I just cant imagine settling for a 360.

i wonder if games will be locked to firmware as they (partially) are on the PSP? I can see it now...someone unlocks a homebrew exploit on PS3Linux, only to have it patched in a firmware update, days later

I gotta ask: If someone does not have internet, can you get it updated at the store ??? Or how to go about this ?? I mean I have internet now but last year I didn't and I often wondered ???

    -------------------------------------

Lex, I'm thinking you can get a SD card (or CF or MSpro), go to a friend's and d/l it there then upload it onto the PS3?

    I dunno?

    Hope that helps.

I have to be honest that I don't own a PS3 but is the USB cable on the control used for charging it or do you have to buy a battery pack like the XBOX 360?

"I just got my PS3. I used the upgrades and for some reason the system would not read the games or movies after that. I contacted Sony and they offered a full replacement. Bummer, I waited so long for this and now I have to wait more time."

even though that sucks for you, its great news that sony is willing to give a full replacement on any defective PS3's!

its crazy how they released this system with all these features missing from it. Sure they may be added sooner or later. But how long do people have to wait. Question. Are some of these games not offered in 1080p? I have the games but not the system and I was looking at the back of NBA2K7 and it says offered in 720p. Does that mean 1080p not included? IF so that is a low blow. Its says 1080p but some say 720p. All games should come with 1080p

I agree Cloud737. The first things on their list should be the compatibility list and specially the 1080i scaling issue, which is affecting lots of people.

  • Cloud737

    Posted Nov 29, 2006 6:38 am PT

Lol, they updated to do THAT? They should concentrate on other things, like making those 200 games be backwards compatible or to make scaling possible.

ok you wanna know something that i want???? .... I want the ps3 to give me what i payed for... ok this is logic for me... i payed 399 for my xbox 360 and it has a unified online community, it can play all games at 1080p, run any music or movie of my pc through my network, download movies in 720 and 1080p through video marketplace, and the biggest feature is it can do all these things at the same time..... it remembers all my dl's..... then i turn around and get a ps3 for almost double the money... and it can't even do what the xbox 360 can do now and doesnt even come with hd cables, it can play music off portable devices but that even glitches half the time, i cant play any custom music in any game yet, the browser locks my system up,no unified friends list, no 1080i or p games when xbox had em from day one, i dont understand this, i had my hopes up and sony so dissapointed me, the controller is really suffereing from the lack of the rumble feature and needing to bring my usb cable with me to my friends house sucks really bad... sony wtf i thought your system would be the 1080p god and u were blowing on xbox for not having it for the time they did but at least they always had 1080i upscaling and custom music, backgrounds, themes, and awesome connectivity and community..... im really starting to change my mind about which system is really the superior system

Irish8607 High def movies out of the box on blue-ray, but your regular dvd's won't be upscaled. Which I wanted it to do. I wish the update fixed some of my lockup problems. I still get random freezes playing resistance.

I can guarantee u that the PS3 and 360 versions of GTA will be almost identical. It won't be GTA that will show everyone what the PS3 can do, its going to have to be some extraudinary exclusive. Personally I don't think there will be a huge difference between what the 360 and PS3 can do. (Except play High Def movies out of the box of course :-P )

  • Zoomer30

The PS3 is next gen, its just that most of the GAMES for it right now really are not all that "next gen". The PS3 has power that the game makers dont even KNOW how to use yet

Just wait till GTA comes out, and try not to wet yourself. that will be the true dawn of next gen. Oh and dont forget the F1 racing game. That game should be a tech example when people ask why they need a PS3

"Why launch a system with so few units." It is a marketing trick. Ship a low ammount to build hype, then a little before christmas they will release double the amount they did at launch. People will buy thinking that they will run out so they need to buy. It is mainly to trick people unlike us who don't know much about it. i.e parents looking to buy for their children. We know that there will be another 700,000 launched before the end of the year but for all the average consumer knows it could be any amount.
