PS3 Killzone resurfaces

Dutch daily spotlights Guerilla Games' elusive shooter; 120 developers working on project, downloadable content confirmed.
By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
Posted Nov 27, 2006 2:39 pm PT

Ever since its controversial trailer fired up 2005's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the forthcoming Killzone game for the PlayStation 3 has been missing in action. It was nowhere to be seen at a variety of high-profile events, including E3 2006 and the 2006 Tokyo Game Show. The shooter wasn't even mentioned at the Gamers' Day events Sony held to help hype the launch of the PS3.

Today, the long silence on the game was broken by the Dutch newspaper de Volksrant. In an article titled, "A video game more expensive than the most expensive film," the daily highlights the next-gen Killzone and its developer, Amsterdam-based and Sony-owned Guerilla Games. The piece's name comes from the fact that the game is costing more to develop than the priciest film in Dutch history, director Paul Verhoeven's World War II thriller Black Book (Zwartboek).

While Black Book cost more than 16 million euros (approximately $21 million), Guerilla won't mention specific numbers for Killzone's budget. "Our budget tops [the film]," said Killzone director Arjan Brussee. "We're working on the biggest multimedia project in Dutch history."

Killzone's high cost is due to the labor-intensive development nature of graphically demanding next-generation games. "Work that used to take someone a week now takes him a month," said Brussee. Currently, some 120 developers are working on Killzone--roughly three times the staff of the first Killzone. Interestingly, half of dev tem comes from outside the Netherlands, up from one third on the PlayStation 2 original.

Another factor driving up the game's price tag is localization, as the new Killzone will be fully translated in 20 different languages. This effort will pay off in the long run, Brussee thinks. "You sell 30 to 40 percent more [units] with a translated version," he said.

The Volksrant article also confirmed suspicions that Killzone will have downloadable content via the PS3's online PlayStation Store. "The Killzone that is in stores is only the beginning," promised Brussee. Though the developer did not go into specifics, the newspaper mentioned that new "chapters" will be downloadable, raising the prospect of episodic content.

Killzone for sure will bring back the glory of being a great game. Hopefully the gaming action (when it come out on ps3) will match up to the Xbox 360 competition (halo, gears of war). This game NEEDS TO HAVE MORE UPDATES SOMETIME SOON

Killzone was damn good, but unfortunately, the PS2 didn't have enough power to bring it to glory. Most of it had small issues with rendering things in time.

It'd be kind of funny if the next KZ is made so demanding that the PS3 won't be able to handle it, either.

I think everyone who hadn't played Killzone, thought it was overrated. But I thought it was at least as good as Halo. It was an awesome game, and by the looks of how much they're putting in development, Killzone 2 could actually be the "Halo Killer" Sony intended it to be.

ANYONE WHO BEAT KILLZONE KNOWS THAT IT ROCKS!!!!!!!!!! their are so many TECHNICAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS GAME....BUT THE FACT THAT ITS STILL SO FUN TO PLAY BLOWS MY MIND!!!! !!!! AND THIS MEANS THAT KILLZONE 2... IS GONNA BE 10 TIMES BETTER.... IF THEY FIX THE STORYLINE AND THE GLITCHS!!!!!!!!!

This game better be good cause it looks like the only title that will save Sony from the trap theyve put themselves into. For all those who went out there and spent $600 on their ps3 i hope this game makes it worth it. If its as good as it looked in the trailer then i might find myself forking out the money for a ps3 but for now im happy with a Wii and a 360.

Now all we need is more information. I remember that the first Killzone was hyped to hell... I mean I bought it and liked it... but it could have been better since I do agree it was rather linear. I mean their wasn't even any jumping... yeah yeah.. I've heard all the arguments about it... but they could have at least put a system in that made jumping seem realistic and that the rag doll effect was pretty dumb. I played resistence recently and the AI was pretty good... if Killzone can improve on that while keeping gameplay interesting, I'll definitly consider buying it... but of course the problem right now is that we seriously still don't know anything about the game. I mean the only thing we have on it is a couple of articles and the preview vid shown several years ago.

The fact that there are so many devs and a lot of money being spent makes me think that this game can acheive it's graphical goal and it's gameplay goal too. Motorstorm is also an example of a game that looks pretty damn close to the trailer.

Even if it looks close to the E3 trailer it'll be the best looking game around. I think the origional for the PS2 was no where near as bad as it was made out to be, not great, but still pretty good. Hopefully it'll OWN Crysis and put the PC fanboys in their place. I hate fanboys of any type, not just the PC ones...

Should be great, an impressive game to be. I hope the tilt will be there, with the big budget and all... Hope it won't be a flop à la Hollywood with over the top production with no substance or apeal of anysort....

WOW... move over Halo and Xbox.... this seems like it will knock over any FPS out there... but well Resistance: Fall of Man was one of the best FPS of 2006. so with the ps3 and killzone 2 i think we have reach a new (nice) generation.

This is great news new chapters downloadable means more game play. Sure you may have to pay a couple bucks for the next chapter but thats a far sight better then having to wait a year or so for the next one to come out and then still having to shell out 70 bucks to buy it. Will they get it looking like it did in the trailer? Eh who knows. But i can say given the original killzone and how it looked compared to anything else that existed at the time, it's defiantly possible.

Here's to hoping Killzone is amazing so I have an excuse to get a PS3 to put alongside my 360. I'm a diehard shooter fan that's all I play (and hockey games too). I need an amazing exclusive shooter for me to buy a new system. Resistance didn't blow me away enough to justify buying a PS3 but hopefully Killzone will.

Not one single critic gave halo or halo 2 a score less then a 9, wow every single journalist who knows everything about how games are made thought halo and halo 2 were great games. Wow so your opinion when you know nothing of video games means crap. Shut up and recognize that killzone could never be bigger then halo, it's just that simple. End quote.

I agree, THE HALO Series is a great one indeed. And among, if not the best fps series on consoles today. I played the first one on the Xbox. But get your friggin information, facts and comments straight.

I do not know what critics you refer to, but several reviewers gave HALO 2 a score lower than 9. With the lowest being 7/10. Just check out gamespots own reference list.

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/halo2/review.html?mode=web

Sure it is a phenomenon, but not getting your facts straight will not help convince people that it is in-fact a straight up good game, and has loads of things going for it. This is happening all over the messageboards and it makes me wanna retch my guts out. People with a bias toward either console should shut the f*** up. And let some constructive discussion take place.
sorry for the rant.

bigger budget = more money to do stuff = better staff = better game

i hope Killzone get that good, i loved the shooting part in the Killzone 1, with the PS3 hardware i bet they're gonna make a better game then we saw at that trailer

i dont know why everyone seems to think that money equals a good game. just because a lot goes in does mean the same will come out. look at big budget movie flops for example. if the game is great, everyones happy but lets just wait until we can play it to make that decision.

Sounds good, the first Killzone was 'ok' it had some good things going for it but was overall... not that good. But this one should be better if they are spending so much time and money on it.

Oh and to the guy who wants microsoft to monopolize: Have you EVER tried an OS other than Windows... cause if you did you would realize that windows is kinda **** especially Internet Explorer, that's why I reccomend Firefox to everyone.

xbox360 still no digital output, it belongs to the stone age of HD.
c'mon how hard could it be to have shipped with a standard HDMi/Dvi port on the box?
the colours on VGA are horrible.

i got rid of it because also the games were way too American for my taste, even the Japanese games were made for the US market: PS3 here i come..

why is everyone making a super monopoly sound like a good thing? IT WOULD MEAN THEY COULD CHARGE RDICULOUS PRICES FOR ANYTHING GOOD! Also in relation to the news story im no longer that shched about this game, i mean it looked good but trying to spread hype by telling ua a budget - c'mon if they have any good ideas they generally announce them. Bungie don't say "were making this game with $1000000000000" they show screenshots, video's and a BETA test

I was pro - ps3 before i saw the launch titles now even the Wii looks superior!

hi_me

i hate fanboys

sony, MS, nintendo, whatever

does it matter? if Guerilla or Bungie puts 2-3 years of effort into a game, then yes, it should be a good game. If 1 company had a(true sony doesn't count) monopoly, then i could play all great games on 1 system. You should buy games YOU like, and voice your opinion, but don't go bashing Halo3/Killzone 2 if noone has ever touched it.

Plus, if they are spending so much on this game, that's NOT good. A game shouldn't have to have super high production values. Seen Shemune? good game, didn't sell. Heard of YAkuza? OK game, cost just as much as this. bungie isn't spending this much, and Epic spent 10mil on GoW. They spend 21mil+ because it has cgi stuff in it. Thats graphics, but its gameplay that counts

btw, 360 owners, buy Viva Pinata. its worth it

Finally some info. This game is gonna be so sweet.
If a game is gonna cost this much it's gonna be really good. They wouldn't spend that much and just let the game come out crappy. Any one who says this game is bad is the worst fanboy alive.

hah, yes, and I'll bet that the only way to surf the net would be via aol-timewarner-xboxlive... and then creepy guys wearing too much leather will give us a choice between red and blue pills etc etc etc... ever notice how the colour for the matrix is green? and how the colour for xbox is also green......? the machines are takin over!

hang on, what were we talking about again? ;p
