TG-16 games arrive on Wii

Virtual Console gets updated with first games from NEC's legacy system; Bonk's Adventure and Bomberman '93 selling for 600 points each.

When Nintendo launched the Wii on Sunday, it did so with the promised dozen downloadable retro games available on the system's Virtual Console. But while the initial 12 offerings on the service included titles from the NES, the Super Nintendo, the Sega Genesis, and the Nintendo 64, the small slate of previously announced TurboGrafx-16 games was entirely absent.

Nintendo rectified that situation today, as the company has released a pair of TG-16 games on the Virtual Console. Gamers can now download Bonk's Adventure, the debut of the system's megacephalic mascot, and Hudson's Bomberman '93. Each game will set users back 600 Wii Points, or $6.

By the end of the year, Bonk and Bomberman will be joined on the Virtual Console by a handful of other TurboGrafx games, including Super Star Soldier, Victory Run, and Dungeon Explorer.

The TG-16 was always the oddball system in my opinion, it'll be interesting to finally play these games some 15+ years later.

You can store them on sd cards thats a fact, but another Wii wont play them till the game is purchased on that console.

I take it you didn't read the full inscription. It says for 5 player games you need at least 1 GameCube controller, the other 4 can be any combination of GameCube controllers/Classic Controllers/Wii Remotes.

"If bomberman is 5 player then I am definately getting it. "

you'll be happy to know that it is according to the description on the Wii Shop Channel... i'm not sure how they'll pull that off though unless you have 4 gamecube controllers and one regular Wiimote.... or vice versa.

There's a good number of kids out there that don't know the TG-16 and the great games it brought us. This virtual console is a great addition to the Wii, and one of the reasons I am more interested in making it my second console than a PS3.

    Lasafrog:
I'm dying for Military Madness on TG-16 for Virtual Console. I recommend it to everyone who liked the Advance Wars games; Military Madness practically wrote that blueprint 15 years ago. Awesome game! ---

WORD! Was beginning to think I was the only one who ever played it...

Blazing Lazers and Legendary Axe are worthy as well.

"Bonk's Adventure is the Shiit, the only reason why I will be getting a Wii."

that is ridiculous. Yeah, Bonk is a great game, and its one my personal favorites of all time... but geeze if thats the only reason thats just stupid.

You can't store your VC games in SD cards from what I've heard. Apparently you have to erase them and later you can download them again for free if needed.

Its great theyre putting all these classic games on the vc but I really wish they made more memory space.. over the next 4-5 years there must be some sort of way to expand it.. Also these old school games are great but not worth $6.. Still waiting for UK release =o(

a thing that would really be great , is to put that old arcades classics up to download, i do not mean those conversions for console i mean like, the original ninga gaiden, sega's ones shinobi, james bond, that of the cop that were getting armored fighting gangs(a fat man cryed out in tnat game"hey! the police")(i think it was the first arcade with some voice recorded) and all that old school arcade stuff that i enjoyed when child.
I never seen that games even on mame or callus emulations so i think is a great idea

Bonk was a really fun platformer that didnt get the respect that Sonic and Mario got. TG wasn't all that common here in North America and it really never got a chance. I hope to see more classics from Turbo Grafix in the coming weeks.

I remembered playing Bonks Adventure in the mall during lunch time at school, The game was ...ok, but got boring really fast (Hey this was a lunch break and the only game on display).

I dont understand why the TG-16 games are a little pricey though...

i'm hoping they'll half the prices of all the virtual console games...that's just way too much...until the rare rpg's come along, i ain't spending that much. i hope they have lufia 2. that was one of my favorites but i've never been able to find it for a reasonable price. $8 would be perfect.

  • Ices100

Too bad they didn't include net play, but because of that these games aren't worth playing over again. Playing against someone around the world would have giving it more replay value as it never had it before, so if they did games that weren't good with just player would have new life.

Hopefully they will tap into the T-16 CD games as the system as a ton of great games. Maybe this means we will finally get to play Rondo of Blood in the US.

Also Valis was a serisously underplayed game. Hope to see it on the VC as well

  • CarlosVR2

    Posted Nov 22, 2006 6:50 am PT

Is possible that Dracula X: Rondo of Blood will be available in the virtual console? It was released in 1993 for the PC Engine Super CD-ROM (Turbografx-16) on Japan.

It would be awesome, as that game is one of the "lost" Castlevania games.

I've heard that Bonk's Adventure was a good game. Once I get a chance to own a Wii, Bonk's will be the first TG-16 game on my Virtual Console list (even though I've never owned a TG-16 console in my life because I've never heard of it back then)

Yeah i could live wit that. Im just a firm beleiver in non-cencorship, i mean, i put up with rubbish like SAW as the movies, so why can't i have my games unedited? I realise the time difference in that example in regards to contra, im just ranting

As long as when we do get Contra, the UK gets Contra, and not freakin 'Probotector' with added robots."

I prefer probotechtor myself, lets hope they release both so we get a choice.

As long as when we do get Contra, the UK gets Contra, and not freakin 'Probotector' with added robots. I'll be fine, if not, im complaining! It sickens me that i own Super Probotector and Probotector (Contra 3:Alien Wars and Contra NES) but have the play the emulated versions because of all the censoring (I want to play the original idea, not the one my country thought i could handle)

I know i say this a lot :\ i just live in hope we will get Contra for real this time around.
