Shippin' Out November 20-26: Superman, Rainbow Six Vegas

Post-console-launch period thins out holiday list to only a few big names, as Wii, PS3 shipped most of their launch window games last week.

Gamers were giddy this past weekend, as not one, but two next-gen consoles were launched--Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii. Their debuts were bolstered with several launch titles, which helped bloat last week's release schedule to well over 100 titles.

This week is a different story, because only a few big names will hit shelves over the next few days. What would normally be a blockbuster sales week, which includes the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy known as Black Friday, sees just over 40 games released, only a few of which are big names.

Superman Returns: The Videogame, which was delayed to the holiday season to release near the movie's DVD release, swoops onto the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Xbox, and DS on November 20. A Game Boy Advance spin-off, titled Superman Returns: Fortress of Solitude, is also due in stores that day.

Gamers who prefer their heroes a tad more realistic can take aim at Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas for the Xbox 360. Set in Sin City, the first-person squad-based shooter challenges gamers to take down terrorists with high-tech gadgets and an array of firepower. Publisher Ubisoft is also working on PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 versions of the game.

Those who played Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion know that the fictional world it is set in is enormous. However, it's about to get even bigger, because the developer is releasing Oblivion's first "large content download," titled The Knights of the Nine, on November 21 for both the PC and Xbox 360. The PC retail version will include all of the game's downloadable content released to date and will cost $19.99. The Xbox 360 version is just the Knights of the Nine expansion and will cost 800 points ($10) on Xbox Live Marketplace--no retail version is currently available. The downloadable version of the PC expansion, which is identical to the Xbox 360 download, won't be ready until December 4 and will cost $9.99.

This week's new releases are listed below (list taken from retailer information--actual dates may vary).

Notice... No PS3 Titles listed in the article

Oh... and I had to laugh... Yesterday I opened a flyer for an electronic outlet, they are advertising PS3 games for sale, but no HARDWARE... lol... "Merry Christmas Son... Here is your new PS3 game! Sorry you can't play it as we can't find (or afford) the console.... but if you hold the bluray disk up to the light it sparkles real pretty like!" Ha ha ha

Radirgy Generic (GC) Wow I never thought I would see that one stateside. I'd rather have it for the DC but I'll take what I can get. (I just don't have the money to import it for the DC right now) Now I just need to find out who will be getting it. EB doesn't list it on their web page. Vegas is the 1st Tom Clancy game I am considering buying after playing. I'm looking forward to it. I really wanted the Oblivion expansion on disk for the 360. O well looks like I will have to download it, but I really prefer having a backup just in case.

Only Raven Shield is the last decent R6 game.

The Superman demo, not very good. EA is the devil, why did Superman team up with the devil?

  • VegetaMaelstrom

    Posted Nov 20, 2006 7:12 pm GMT

I'm not going to even think about picking up Superman Returns until I read a few reviews. That Oblivion expansion pack for the PC will be mine before the year is up if Santa thinks I have been nice enough.

I thought that said Gender Mountain on there... anyhow, the X360 version of the Knights Of The Nine DOESN'T have all of the downloadable content? *sigh* I guess it makes sense... and since I already have most of that content, it isn't so bad for me. I will say it's about time this game got a CONSIDERABLE update and not this nickel and dime horse armor-style BS.

Looks good for the 360 this holiday season

  • brucesnz

    Posted Nov 20, 2006 6:15 pm GMT

I'm too lazy to look it up but I wonder how $10 for the oblivion expansion plus whatever the downloadable content costs on 360 compares to $20 for the PC version....
