NYC loves PS3
Hundreds line up in front of the SonyStyle store in midtown Manhattan; spirits are high with less than 24 hours before the system's launch.
NEW YORK CITY--The most hardcore of hardcore gamers were out in abundance in New York City Wednesday night, all hoping for a chance to score a PlayStation 3.
Gamers lined up outside SonyStyle Plaza in midtown Manhattan knew their best chance of getting a PS3 was waiting in front of that store. While other retail outlets were stuck with only a handful of systems, the PS3 bash there promised hundreds of Sony's next-gen console for sale.
Herded without opposition by Sony security guards, hundreds of gamers lined the street and even began wrapping around the corner of the next block. Spirits were high as a pseudocommune formed, each participant allied by an equal goal--get a PS3 on November 17.
Throughout the huddled line, the hopeful were crammed close together and sat in folding chairs more suitable for the beach than the hard asphalt of Manhattan. Diversions included gaming on PSPs, idle chit-chat, the occasional Nintendo DS, and the classic book. While most were receptive to the slightest bit of media attention, some campers covered their faces, perhaps protecting their "being sick and can't work" alibis.
Though one would expect harsh weather in New York at this time of the year, the weather seemed forgiving for those in line, hovering in the 60s and merely overcast. The weather gods appear ready to test their determination Thursday night though, as thunderstorms have been forecast for the area.
The gamer with the claim to being first in line is New York native Angel Paredes, who arrived at the store Monday evening. Though his commitment to getting a system day one was met with some resistance from his family, the temptation was too much to deny.
"I've been waiting for this system for over a year," Paredes told GameSpot. His family, who now understands his plight, have supplied him with food and even held his space in line for a few hours while he went home, showered, and revisited the luxury of having a roof over his head.
Though the launch of the system is still a full day away, those in line exuded a feeling of being in the home stretch. Paredes and the other hopeful PS3 owners are doing this together and have built a common bond.
"I've made a bunch of new friends," said Paredes, smiling and gesturing to those in line behind him.
Though there is the temptation of hawking a system for profit for all those who are lucky enough to score a PS3 on Friday, most of those waiting in front of the Sony Store in New York seemed content to keep theirs. However, a few dissenters did seem to opt for the quick cash.
"I'm totally happy with my Xbox 360 right now. I've got Gears of War sitting at home," said a man in line. "I may get a PS3 later, but for now, I think I'm selling mine."
Hopefully for those in line, the wait will culminate in a brand-new PS3 early on Friday morning. Sony plans on kicking off its launch festivities at 9 p.m. EST, with the first PS3 sold in North America being handed out to Paredes at midnight. Those waiting at the end of the line be warned--Sony has announced that only the first 400 in line will get into the party and have the chance to buy a console. As for the others? Well, there's always the next shipment.
In contrast to the SonyStyle Plaza, a few major retail locations in the popular shopping area of Times Square were near empty. Both Toys "R" Us and Virgin Megastore in the famed district were barren. One employee at Virgin confirmed to GameSpot that the store only expected about five units for the system's launch.
Stay tuned to GameSpot for more coverage of the North American PS3 launch.

There is also *NO* reason to hate any kind of console, if you do, you are a *ing fanboy, might as well admitted it.

Gmacrusher - Untrue. Just because you don't like a particular console doesn't mean that you're not a true gamer. In your eyes what should true gamers do? Buy a console they don't want just to show support to the company that made it? Seems pretty stupid to me.

Ragingfire; I told you to do your homework, not ask me for answers. If you really have not seen anything on the PS3 overheating then you must have been living in the Jungle for the past 6 months with no communication. Here are some links anyhow. Sony even confirmed that the batter pack is not replaceable. Do your homework ragingfire.

Yeah, PS3 next year for me too. I have my 360, will have my Wii so that'll do me for now... well, that's if I bother at all with the PS3.
PS3 : COD3 - stuttery framerates. RESISTANCE OMG only 8.6 ;-) !!!
And all the SONY fanboys will defend this with the sort of gusto and blind devotion i've come to love reading in the forums. BTW yes, 8.6 IS a respectable score, and YES, Resistance looks very nice. But after all of the PS3 will 'pwn' the 360 and Wii comments we have suffered over the last 18 months, It will hopefully be a reality check for the Fanboys. IT'S JUST A BLOODY CONSOLE....NOT THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST WITH A BLUE RAY DRIVE STRAPPED TO HIS ASS.

I wonder if people on this board realize that their is a forum for console wars/disputes....
If you can't stand Sony or their Playstations, why bother post it here?
Go up and click on the Forums link, and get to the Console wars board.
You can express your opinions there.
You can go there and express how the 360 is better than the PS3 and viseversa.
I don't feel sorry for anyone, you can wait for the system.
It's not going to kill you to wait until next year.
I'll probably get one around march of next year.
So calm down, it's not the end of the world.

I agree with TVR_Fan, the luck y American and Japanese people who managed to get a PS3 should feel very sorry for us in the UK and our still unconfirmed March 2007 release date. Right now i'm just hoping I wont have to fight my way through a crowd of people outside Gamestation on Friday the 8th. I have my little reciept with my Wii unit number on it, so hopefully i'll be able to queue jump if there is a queue there, since I preordered months ago.

i have friends waiting in line...they are doing the same thing i'd do. selling it on ebay. aside from halo for xbox (which was in development for PC for quite some time) launch games wear off. but it's exciting to get a new console. and yeah, if we all had the money we would just buy both. i know i'm gonna be playing my brothers Wii for awhile before i get my PS3

It's strange how people who say they are gamers have the nerve to bash at other consoles that they can't afford. I know that you can only afford just one console and that you need to show how good it is to other people when comparing to the other consoles because you need to feel good about your choice, but just stop the bashing. If you actually have an intelligent comment about why you feel a console is the best and worth its price, then speak....just know that it is YOUR opinion, not a fact.
First off, I live in New York City and believe me, those hundreds of kids on that line are pretty much the WHOLE population of "Sony hardcore gamers" for NYC. Just today I was talking with a couple of kids in college and most of them didnt even know that the PS3 would cost $600, and were shocked and laughing about the "hardcore gamers" lining up. I also get the feeling that many of the gamers are going to get their PS3 (prolly all of them would get Resistance and maybe one of the sports/racing games), play the games for a max. 3 weeks, finish their games knowing how short-lived their experience was, and go back to playing their PS2 games until MGS4 comes out.
Which takes me to my second point: I don't feel that the PS3 has a must-buy game on launch...or even after the launch window. No matter how much of a fan of Sony you are, you gotta admit....Resistance isn't going to wow you...you prolly will forget about the game in a year or two. Sure there might be a few games that will excite people besides Resistance (Oblivion, Heavenly Sword, etc.) but none of them has that wow factor that will make it rememorable and ever-lasting like MGS4, FF13, Devil May Cry 4...titles that have been exclusive for Sony for a while and that has that feeling of guaranteed-fun. MGS4 is one of those titles that you feel you can trust being good....just like LoZ:TP, Metroid, Mario for Nintendo and Halo for Microsoft. And the fact that Sony looks like it is launching with forgettable titles that will only last you for about a month just doesn't seem to be worth $600 right now.....
Of course this is just my opinion and you might feel differently...you may feel that right now the $600 is totally worth it to get the PS3, esp. with the bragging rights that comes from getting an expensive, rare item like that. You may even feel that Resistance is truly a killer app and totally worth spending all that money for and getting a system at lauch. But even you have to admit...Resistance and all of the launch games just can't be compared to all of the other games that are promised to come for the PS3 like MGS4 and FF13. I'll get a PS3 one day...the day that good games come out. Because in the end, its all about the games....if a console doesn't have games that interest you, then you just wasted your money. If Sony is that committed to selling a large amounts of consoles, then there will be enough when the real good games come out...you don't have to act as if its the last day the PS3 is coming out. But I am going to get a Nintendo Wii for Zelda and possibly Trauma Center and/or Madden 07 b/c to me those are games that I can't miss playing (not a Nintendo fanboy....I got a PS2, which I love, and PSP, which disappointed me with a lack of games that interested me.....hence why I learned my lesson and decided from now on to first read reviews and do not buy into the hype).
Oh and if you are wondering why hundreds and hundreds of people are waiting in line even though there is only 400 consoles its because a) they think the rain is gonna scare away all the less-committed people and b) they can't count. And its sad that people are congratulating Angel Paredes for waiting since Monday to get his PS3.....no matter how good a system is, it is not worth it to lose a week of school or work to get a system you can get if you wait another month or two. Do you know how much stuff you miss from school in a week? And if he had a job, do you think his boss is going to let him slide because he wants to get a PS3? Hell he will prolly make Paredes give his system to him so he can get his job back. It's sad to think that he will prolly never make more than 20 grand a year with his priorities all messed up.....sorry but thats just my opinion.

ninjaman thanks yeah dude how retarded is AJay25 i'm talking about the outcome of the 360. not exactly dreamcast but the fact of being a year behind the next console will hurt it's popularity from now on. i predict after a year or so PS3 will be in full effect. It will be the console winner with 360 trailing behind it for the rest of this console generation. the 360 will be a good, reliable system for it's life, but the PS3 will always be ahead with better performance and bigger and more bad ass games.

Thank you Sccuniverse and TrueIori for the addition to my posts. I left in peace and will leave in peace once again. The 360 also came out a year before the PS3 and still had some good launch titles up it's sleeve and now it is coming out with even better ones. The PS3 can't even run Gears of War because the Blu-Ray drive can't read the cd fast enough. The need of the Blu-Ray drive was close to nothing, there is no need for 54 GB's of space for a game. The Xbox 360 cds hold about 10 GB's I think and less then that is used for games anyhow, Sony just added $200 to the price for a completely needles piece of hardware and now that hardware is a reason why soo many PS3's won't be out this year and most of 07. Sony is selling the PS3 for $50 less in Japan then any other part of the world, you have to send in your controler when the batteries die instead of buying a new one and they are releasing the consoles just 2 weeks after their newest ones overeated at the Tokyo game show. Not to forget that the cores on the Cell are prone to overheating even with the large heatsink that is surounding it and the multiple speed fan and all the air holes covering the console. Must I say more?
Err, ok, just want to clear up a few minor issues I have with this comment.
Blu-ray actually can read the CD's fast enough, the fact is that the 360's drive reduces read speed as it goes towards the centre of the disc, unlike the Blu ray which makes its read speed constant across the whole disc.
As far as I have read on many sites, the PS3 batteries can be self changed in the controller. There is even a picture in the manual of the PS3 on how to change the battery. I don't know where you got that from :S
I think any console would overheat really when put in such a tiny glass box, with little ventilation. So far no reports of any Japanese hardware faults. No overheating, nada. Only games problems, which can be fixed with firmware updates. Cell's prone to overheating? Can you please provide a link (source) for that. I've never heard it before, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Oh and what gets me aswell is the lines lol. Surley the guy right at the back knows he's not getting a playstation on launch day, yet sits there for days anyway ROFL . . Quite pathetic.

The PS3 backwards compatibility thing actually is quite important, as NorwegianWinter pointed out.
The 360's list of "compatible" games is laughable only because so many good & niche titles are conspicuously missing. Just wait, I'm sure the PS3 will have the same problems and Sony is gonna do about as good of job on making them work as Microsoft has.
You could sorta justify the PS3's price more by saying, "Yeah, the PS3 is $500.......but I have a PS1 & PS2 built in...so since I don't have either of those, that's like a $130 item included for free.
But man...now that the PS3 has to rely solely on PS3 titles to get gamers excited...that's some task.
I love it how Sony isn't sliding past the masses like the PS2 did in 2000! Here's hoping Sony will be gone by 2010!

One more thing. Look at the reviews of the Call of Duty 3 and Resistance games, they have not beaten the reviews of GoW or the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 3. Another point to keep in mind, the PS3 versions are known for their inconsistent frame rates. Tony Hawk for example: the Xbox 360 version has a slight technical difficulty but the PS3 version is trash. There is no online play like there is on the 360 and the FPS is crap. Also, the PS3 isn't completely backwards compatible like most thought it was, there are some PS2 and PS1 games that won't work correctly. If you all do your homework you will easily find out the PS3 isn't worth the price. Wait until a price drop or until they have newer version out.

The PS3 does look interesting but I much prefer my Xbox 360 over the PS3. The PS3 has countless problems that the launch consoles will be hit by the most. The CPU will overheat on many of those, the GPU will be extremely heated as well. The Blu-Ray drive will probably have defects, primarily when moved while playing. Sony claims that the Cell processor can run on only 2 cores but it will lag like hell if it doesn't have them all. If it were me sitting in line, I would get a PS3 for the sole reason to sell it for thousands in order to buy more 360 games and accessories

Ok, everyone saying the people in this line are loosers. YOU ALL NEED TO GROW UP. People want the PS3, so what. You go on message boards and diss people you don't even know. That makes you cooler than them? Why are you on a gaming website? Lastly. Askiker, dating "attractive women" and playing sports does not make you better than everyone else. Plus you said "Get lives you 360 and PS3 fanboys" but in the sentance before you said "hit up some GoW." So you dissed people who like 360's but you have one yourself. Someones clever.
