Sid Meier's Pirates! sails to PSP

Take-Two brings Civilization creator's swashbuckling strategy game to the PlayStation Portable early next year.

Originally released in 1987, remade for the PC in 2004, and then ported to the Xbox in 2005, Pirates! is one of Sid Meier's most frequently revisited creations. The strategy-adventure game puts players in the role of a pirate captain in the 17th-century Caribbean attempting to track down kidnapped family members, extract revenge for past wrongs, find romance, and amass a huge fortune.

Now the game is sailing out into uncharted waters as Take-Two Interactive has announced it will publish a PlayStation Portable version of Pirates! in North America and Europe. The PSP version will be marked by a number of new features, including local wireless multiplayer for up to four players, graphics adapted to the system's widescreen display, and new treasure hunts to keep players busy.

Pirates! has been rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older, and is scheduled to ship in North America in January of 2007. A European release should follow on February 27.

The PC version was addictive, this one looks promising graphically based on these few screen shots, unless they are using PS shots. ANYHOW I am a hude fan of SM Pirates and i just got a PSP for xmas. Looks like a few sleepless nights are in my future should this live up to its PC Big Brother.

I love the civ series, I admire Sid Meier's work, and I definitely enjoyed Pirates for the PC, so obviously I'm excited about playing this on my PSP. However, the main point of the PC version that drew me in was the simplicity of the control scheme, and I can't help but wonder whether that will be lost in translation. I never played the game on the XBox, and although the reviews were good, the reason I am a PC gamer is because I like to use a keyboard and mouse. I hope that the port of Pirates turns out better than the port of The Sims 2 to PSP.

SWEET! This is a perfect game to port over to handheld. I also wouldn't mind a de-bugged Sea Dogs.

Great game, but don't know how it's gonna transfer to a small screen, to say nothing of it being run off a portable power supply. At least it's not Civ IV... you'd need to pop a car battery into the PSP.

I would actually buy this. It's a fun little game that you can casually play, aka. good for the way I like to play when on the go. Plus I been thinking of rebuying it on PC since I lost my disc but nevermind!

I can see the commercial now. Guy 1: Come out and Play! Guy 2: I can't! I'm playing Pirates! Guy 1: Come outside, they got Portable Pirates! Guy 2: WHAT!?!
