ChartSpot: October 2006

Scarface chops up the console charts, beating Double Agent and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon; The Sims 2 Pets takes a bite out of WOW.

With the Wii and PlayStation 3 now in stores--if you can find one--October 2006 will go down as the last month the Xbox 360 was the sole next-generation console on the market. So it must have burned Microsoft, then, to have its highest-profile next-gen release for the month be beaten by a game for a rival's six-year-old platform.

Yes, October saw the 360 edition of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent bested by Scarface: The World Is Yours for the PlayStation 2. The enthusiasm for the game's film inspiration overcame a lukewarm critical reception, helping the game sell more than half a million units on all platforms combined. The PS2 edition sold more than 366,000 units during the month, earning it a place at the top of NPD Funworld's combined console-handheld chart. The Xbox Scarface sold more than 110,000 units, enough to land it in 11th place. However, the game's little friend, the PSP spin-off Scarface: Money. Power. Respect., didn't say hello to enough gamers to make the top 20.

After second-place finisher Double Agent came the last two months' top dog, Madden NFL 07 for the PS2. Behind it was Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team for the Game Boy Advance, two slots ahead of its DS sibling, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team. Sandwiched in between was newcomer Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (PS2), showing that the venerable fighting franchise's high-flying fisticuffs remain popular.

In seventh place, the PS2 NBA Live 07 finished just ahead of newcomer FIFA Soccer 07 (PS2). Behind them, Take-Two's controversy-courting PS2 game Bully wedgied into ninth place. A more genteel title, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 (PS2), putted its way into 10th place.

October saw the PC charts go to the dogs--literally. In its first month on the market, EA's Sims 2 Pets expansion was the best-selling PC title in the US, keeping perennial favorite World of Warcraft in the second slot. In third was another newcomer from EA--Battlefield 2142, which takes DICE's shooter series even farther into the future than Battlefield 2's semi-contemporary setting.

Sci-fi warfare was also the subject of October's fourth most popular title, debutante Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade. Four other newcomers also cracked the top 20--Microsoft's Flight Simulator X (10th), Guild Wars Nightfall (11th), Age of Empires III: WarChiefs (15th), and Guild Wars Nightfall: Collector's Edition (16th).

    Get a grip PS fanboys. Anytime a game comes out on all systems plus PS2, the PS2 version gonna outsell everyone due to the sheer numbers of the system being on the market. PS2 games gonna outsell PS3 games also.

    what do you think will happen when Wii and PS3 hit the charts?
    PS2 and GC games will be replaced by them just the same as 360 has slowed whatever xbox sales there originally were. "It's good to see PS2 with so 7 games up there"
    PS2 game sales have still been high lately cause so many people still have PS2s- in other words there have been more PS2s bought over last six years than 360s over the last year and this is reflected by game sales.

    For one thing Scarface is a clone of GTA but still fun in it's own right. And second thing don't think for one second that the ps2 is going keep dominating and the only reason it dominated those past years is because it was the only console out for that generation and xbox hadn't come out yet and i was so glad when xbox came out. And last thing i'm tired of hearing that the ps2 was better than xbox the only reason why is because it came out a year early and had more games but when it came to graphics and online play we all know who comes out on top XBOX!!!!!!!!! So all you ps2 fanboys out there grow up get a new system and wait until all the new gen consoles have a chance to each have enough games so we can judge all 3 new systems and see what games for each system come out on top.

    well obviously by the look of things...people are not bothered with how bad a game actually is...but mainly the name of the tittle can sell it as well..I mean come on Scarface?! I work in electronics and I warn people about that game all the time..GTA knock off that sucks Stay away...but I dont work all the time so look what happened...and pokemon....?....I guess I just don't get it..

    Next sure winners are ofcourse FF12 on the Ps2, and Metal Gear Solid : Portable Ops could easily make its spot into top 20 giving the PSP a much needed boost.

    Surprised to see people still buying Xbox games. I would like to see how many pieces each game sold approx.

    PS2 sold ~42mil in USA, ~40mil in Euro and ~25mil in Japan, these charts only count the 42mil in USA. Plus the fact that PS2s have been bought over 6yrs while the 360 over only one year so of course just about all those 360 owners will still be buying loads of games.

    Because of EA's TV ads. They've already got their money stockpile, but the 2K games' sports games are slowly making their way up into the list. Even NBA 2K7 is leading NBA Live 07 in the Xbox 360 chart by 4 places! Cool. I really think that this can be attributed to the fact that early adopters are usually hardcore players, and so they research the reviews & forum comments to see which game's better than the other one. Hence they buy more of NBA 2K7 games than EA's crap basketball game (at least for the Xbox 360).

    I've also often read 2 different kinds of comments from users who've played just about any of 2K games' sports games or Kojima's Pro Evo game after having played EA's counterpart and they say that they never look back again or tell you that the same thing will happen to you eventually. Though the latest FIFA games have made some improvements and is fairly competing well gameplay-wise and feature-wise against the Winning Eleven series, and the last NHL Live 07 game has a critical gameplay improvement, which have brought the realism of it closer to that of the real-life hockey game.

    No, Zelda will never take over Gears of War in November because just look at this site: www.nexgenwars.com. Right now the Wii console have sold over 700,000 units and more will come out in Europe & Australia in December, and that not every Wii owner owns a Zelda game, plus GOW is STILL selling as well, not only Zelda. I bet it'll be above Guitar Hero 2 in the 2nd spot, just my guess.

    Well to be fair 7 out of 10 are PS2 games .... that's not bad !!! your gonna have to face it the ps2 will be around in a big way for another year .. it's a shame that the Xbox has fallen away so quickly. the only exclusive in the top ten for PS2 is bully , and i'd rather play any of the others no the Xbox. I doubt 360 will have more than 2 entries in the top 10 next month either

    the last gen wars is over! it is exclamated with the ps2 kicking a next gen console's b**t. gears of war will own november but won't be there very long. shooting games after shooting games are just boring. as soon as wii and ps3 supplies catch up and their exclusives come out, the charts will look familiar once again ... of course until that shooting game comes out again. boring.

    What I want to know is WHO IN THE BLUE HELL IS BUYING NBA LIVE 07????? That game is GAWD AWFUL...certainly on the 360 (I know, I had it...renta) and from what I could gather, it was horrid on the other platforms as well this time around. I used to love Live, and I am not a 2K fanboy, but I do not understand for the life of me why anyone would waste their money on this game this year. It is pathetic, IMO. Even EA knew this game blew, which is why they released it late to all the review sites. Good God people...wake up and stop buying pure slop. If you don't, EA and the rest of the money-grubbers of the world will continue to produce pure slop.

    Normally, I don't even care about sales charts and whatnot, but seeing Live 07 selling as well as it did when it was such a piss-poor effort this time just kinda pissed me off.
