PS3 Killzone to trump E3 trailer?

Sony exec Phil Harrison says parts of MIA shooter already "exceed" expectations; game won't be shown off until it's ready.

When the PlayStation 3 officially debuted at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo, there was one clip of video that had the gaming world buzzing: the PS3 Killzone trailer. Clocking in at less than two minutes of raw havoc as a group of soldiers on hovering dropships attempt to establish a foothold in enemy territory under heavy fire, the trailer eclipsed most of the actual games at the three-day show and touched off heated debates as to its authenticity.

Some accused Sony of pawning off prerendered cutscenes as the real deal, while Sony itself insisted that everything in the trailer was done in real time. That was just about the last thing Sony had to say on the game, as it was absent from E3 2006 and hasn't been shown publicly since. With the PS3 launching in Japan last weekend and North America this weekend, it appears Sony is ready to talk about Killzone once again.

In an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine and reprinted in part on the "semi-official" Sony blog Three Speech, Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison talked a bit about Killzone. Harrison said he wouldn't show the game until it's ready to exceed expectations, adding that it won't be seen until next year. He also acknowledged the high bar set for the game by the E3 preview, adding that "some elements already exceed the trailer."

Elsewhere in the interview, Harrison discussed the PS3's killer app, Sony's decision to abandon rumble feedback in controllers, and the company's European launch plans.

Steelzer, Its a pre rendered CG animation,so stop being delusional..SONY LIED, the animation was made by Axis animations a Scottish CG animation studio. There is NOTHING real about the killzone2 trailer.THAT IS A FACT, deal with it

Real time cinemas have to place all the character models independently into the 3-d environment. If it was prerendered you would see characters and background together because it would have to be edited for clarity. this game will be a war havoc. The first game on the PS2 was good, just by the surroundings it looked good. I can see that this game will be a complete war mayhem. If not, then my visions are bollox.

bring it to the 360 Microsoft will pay good money
I'm only saying that because they should
bring the price of the PS3 down in Australia for the launch i'm not paying $1000 plus games.

Hardcore gamers are not going to accept anything less than real gameplay like shown in the trailer. Sony stuck to their defense that it was all captured in real time then they better fork out some more dough to Guerilla and make it happen. You will have alot of regrets if this game doesnt come out the way it was introduced. To be honest I can see it never making it out of Dev or production for that matter. SONY YOU BETTER MAKE THIS GAME AND MAKE IT GREAT !!!!! It wasnt Gureilla making all the promises to its loyal fans you did.

p.s. Sony and Zipper better make the best damn socom game ever made just like Killzone to be anywhere competitve agains Xbox Live shooter titles. Like Gears of War, Rainbow 6, GRAW , etc.....

I don't care about the graphics, as long as the graphics are better then the last game im cool with the game. It's all about gameplay with me and from playing the last killzone it was great,it had me playing till 5:00A.M. Yuh There Wasnt Alot Of Interacting Involved with the enviroment, But I Stil Have fun Taking Down My Opponent , and im still playing it now. So yuh This Game Going To Be Awsome If You Dont Base It On The Realsim of Graphics Looking like the E3 Trailer. And Im Pretty Shure When He Said "Exceed Expectations" He Meant Alot Better Gameplay, weopens, and interaction Then We Have Seen On The Trailer Just Not With The Realism Of Graphics.

Why does everyone think it is impossible. Gears Of War for the 360 is one of the best graphic games right now. It looks amazing

Given game graphics will obviously increase in the time it takes Killzone PS3 to be released. It is compleately possibble and PROBABLE that games will look this good in a years time.

I am a 3D artist and I'll give you reasons why the graphics will never look as good as the demo. #1 the antialiasing on the video piece is obviously rendered. Realtime graphics should have a little bit of a harsh edge. No real time will with the current graphics cards can get the edges as smooth at the demo.

#2 Triangle. It is very hard to see any triangles in the demo piece. No game can interpelate with such smoothness. You can obviously tell from the 3rd picture that the elbow is completely smooth. Most games use normal mapping to make shadows look smooth, without the need for geometry for shading, but the edges will most always show where the triangles are. #3 The softness of the shadows has too much resolution. No current games, not even gears or any other unreal engine 3 game can have such smooth/soft shadows. The shadows must have been rendered with a high degree of shadow map, or even photons. The xbox360 can support higher rez image maps because of the higher ram, so there is no way the PS3 with it's limited ram can render such smooth shadows realtime. I guarantee that not only will the geometry not meet the level of geometry that the demo put out, the resolution of the textures will not be as good and the shadows will not be as good. And the frame rate will not be as good as the demo. Everything will fall far short of the demo.......

Gears don't even look as good as the demo and they have the best engine in the business. I would be very surprised to see anything close to the graphics level of the killzone demo.

Yeah, hell-fire21 I think you got some mis information PS3 does 1.8 TeraFlops not 2.6 and yes you are right after looking at the video I think it's possible but I don't think it will be though, simply because PS2 version of Killzone sucked and visuals where not great, now this is all new hardware and developers need to re-learn how to work with it, not to mention OpenGL/Es boy I don't know all it's capabilities but it's nothing like DX10. Also I don't care what anyone says the video was moving too fast to be gameplay, it could have been rendered with the game engine, but it was not gameplay, it was just too fast the RSX GPU can't move that fast even at 550Mhz.

No one has told or proven to me WHY the PS3 cannot handle this time of graphic detail and frame-rate with it's hardware? Nor has anyone told or proven to me why it CAN. My 2 cents says that there's a stronger chance the processor that runs the damn machine can get the job done, as people swore FFX was a great looking game in 2000 (and it was) whereas MGS3 looked better than that in 2004. Could it be possible for a development company to tap into the PS3's power in such a short period of time? As we all know games look better over time for any system, they perform better and hell why not sound better. I know the 360 surely hasn't shown all of it's muscle running a 1.0 teraflop, and it's even scarier to think the PS3 hasn't flexed it's pecs at a full 2.6 teraflop. I mean DAMN that's a lot to process, and I fail to believe that with graphic, sound and frame rate all combined in Killzone 2 given this is running in real-time pushes the full force of the PS3. That's right I FAIL TO BELIEVE THAT.

That trailer was not real time. Those graphics won't become an in-game realization for a long, long time. Sony is full of bs. "Some"? I love how they do that..."some"... May i ask how do u know it is not real game play and it is a cutscene....maybe just maybe this game will unlock ps3's potential for everyone to see.....u said game's like this wouldn't come for a long time ....but ps3 in ahead of 360 and our time in technology thats why it cost what it cost and it is worth what it is worth (i think 800 - 840 dollars)

Sounds like this is Sony's hidden ace. At some point they need to come out with a game that will make people say "wow, my 360 can't do THAT..." It would be very wise of them not to blow this opportunity to deliver something high quality.

I honestly couldn't care less about how amazing the graphics are, as long as they are on PAR with other big titles. Killzone didn't suck because of graphics, it sucked because of gameplay. Killzone liberation being good shows hope, and hopefully Sony is ready to finaly deliver a killer APP.

"some elements already exceed the trailer." That worries me. He sounds a bit like a politician there avoiding the real answer to the question of "will the game be as good as the trailer indicated?"

I for one hope it is but i have doubts

Guerrilla is the company behind KILLZONE.
Guerrilla knows exactly what they are doing. I have studied the company in great detail. They conduct extensive hardware testing to ensure their game will take complete advantage of the system. And from what I have read, the Sony Playstation 3 is giving them MUCH to work with. For this reason, I am not in the least surprised that the game can exceed the trailer. I can hardly wait.

look at Resistence, its a LAUNCH title and already stand shoulder to shoulder with the best, so Killzone can be that much good.

remember Mario 64? it was develop at the same time as the Nintendo 64 and so beeing amazing and take 100% profit of the HW of N64.
so Killzone is just like it, its gonna rock. look at KZ:liberation, its so sweet so its possible if this one is as good as the trailer. Cell rocks.

"He also acknowledged the high bar set for the game by the E3 preview, adding that 'SOME elements already exceed the trailer.' "

"Some" can mean a lot of things. It could mean the sound is better than the trailer compared to the acutal game. The word "some" can mean a lot of things. If that "some" was something more significant he would have been more specific. What a BS spin from Sony.

Through my eyes, there is no way the ps3 can possibly have the power to produce such graphics!!! I believe they will have a gameplay trailer and we will be disappointed with the results!!!! Lets not forget sony has a habit of over-hyping and under-delivering!!!!

Resistance:FoM is already getting stellar reviews. The only way for a Killzone to win me over is to get a 9.5 or higher because that's the best score that Resistance has gotten so far. For now, I'll only be slightly happy if I see some up-to-date screenshots.

If the KZ2 come out right now, then what is left for Sony PS3 to kill the Halo 3 ? This is what i think of.... If someone have others Ideas. Plz Post it !!
