Confirmed: PS3 Oblivion now "Q1 2007 title"

It's official: Bethesda Softworks' epic role-playing game won't hit Sony's new console until next year; official launch-window lineup now stands at 20, with more delays rumored.

Just hours after gamers noticed online retailers were listing the PlayStation 3 version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion as coming in 2007, Bethesda Softworks has made it official. In a statement, Pete Hines, the rising developer-publisher's vice president of PR, said flat out that "Oblivion PS3 is now a Q1 2007 title."

Hines gave no official reason for the Oblivion delay. Unofficially, though, the postponement has stirred up suspicions about PS3 development difficulties. There have also been murmurs that the scant supply of the PS3 at launch--400,000 on day one in all of North America--is giving publishers pause about rushing games to market. However, the game suffered a similar setback last November, when it was scheduled to be an Xbox 360 launch title. It was not released until the following March.

Of the 21 PS3 games announced as 2006 titles at Sony's Gamers Day, Oblivion is the first to be officially delayed until next year. Online retailers are also listing F.E.A.R. as being pushed to February, and unconfirmed reports have surfaced that have Sonic the Hedgehog coming in 2007. Neither reps for Sierra Entertainment nor Sega would comment on either game's release status, but GameStop.com still lists Sonic as arriving on November 14. A full list of the remaining 20 launch titles with their GameStop.com release dates--which are not official--is below.

That is prejudice you see giving the ps3 version more content plus a new race? And if you don't know what prejudice is, look it up. I really hope there is an expansion that features teh new race for xbox 360 if not, I'll bust in there in Miedeval Armor with a sword and shield and have a long nice talk with the folks at Bethesda.

I played the PS3 a few weeks ago at the Source event in NYC. Spend your money on a 360 and a Wii. The only game that was even remotely cool and exclusive to PS3 was Resistance, and Gears of War on the 360 is much cooler and better looking anyway.

In even comparisons with games on both systems, the 360 is at least on par with what the PS3 is offering, and in some cases, better. Seriously, wait for the price to come down and play the 360 in the meantime. You won't regret it.

Hey this scenario is very similar to the old xbox vs ps2 days...
first its out on the ps2, then its graphically updated onto the xbox..

But it wasnt graphics, it was avaliability and price. I for one will be happy when all consoles have all games on there. Like mgs4 for all three consoles would be a DREAM. Because it would be similar to people having a massive tv to watch stuff on, or a standard tv... We all know all consoles will have their exclusive titles, but its nice that oblivion is going onto more platforms, its great for games to spread themselves out a bit. More money they make, more games we see!

But I dont like the way sony are, they are making the ps3 to be a standalone system, not even wanting to exist with the other consoles (massive disc capacity etc etc). This means everyone will have to pay like $600 and have a hdtv and internet connection to enjoy some freakin games!

In one respect I am glad this game is going out to more systems, but its almost giving the ps3 some ammo so it can segregate more gamers into being "tech freaks"...
I loved the days when tomb raider 1 was on nearly all platforms... hated the days when it was ps1 only (and eventually pc).

Then tomb raider legends made it great by being cross platform again! I like that way of thinking

THere is one game and one game only on that list I would consider buying for the PS3 and that is Resistance.....everything else I could get on my 360. At this point in time there are not enough games to warrant me spending $600 on a PS3

  • ZeroAlarm

    Posted Nov 11, 2006 6:04 am PT

Ouch. That's a pretty weak launch considering most of those games are multiplatform, and I'm pretty sure most people would rather buy those games on their console and not buy a new console; especially the 7 million Xbox360 owners out there who already have a next-gen system.

MS had the advantage of being the first to launch a next-gen console as there wasn't another next-gen console competing with them which had the same games that they were launching with. I think it's a mix of who gets there first and what systems already have these games.

Sony really need some more exclusives.

Despite the game set backs and delays, I don't think the PS3 will suffer too much. Even if the PS3 doesn't have good launch titles, or even many launch titles, the system, I believe will do fine. As time passes, many more games will be released and many more PS3 exclusive titles will be released, and a lot of people will buy sony's product. So, maybe not many people will by the PS3 at launch, but as time passes, I think the PS3 will be as successful as the PS2.

    Dear Microsoft,

Years ago, I loved you, then I hated you for you monopolies and your horrible business model. Now I find you destroying a company who unjustily took over an industry that were not supposed to be in. You have made everything I had hoped for come true. If you succeed in taking the Playstation and throwing it into the sun, I will buy your Xbox 360 and put it on a pedistal the likes of which have never been seen. Well done. Long live healthy competition again.

a lot of people right now are saying that everyone is going to buy a ps3 fall 2007...problem is, a lot of those people may reconsider when they find a little game is coming to the 360...it's called...uh...oh yeah HALO 3. when its released sony is gonna have a tough time selling the ps3, and a price drop for the 360 may occur at that point, thus losing even more sales for the ps3...sony has really dug a hole for themselves

Guys look--Sony is having a hard time right now-especially with a grade A title like Oblivion being pushed back. For those of us on the 360 who have already it know that it is an outstanding game. It is only fitting that a great game come out on ALL the consoles so EVERYONE has a chance to play it. Its a great game so don't hate on Sony and their system-at least it is coming out sometime.

Hopefully, the extra development time will make some improvements over the 360 version, i.e. screen tearing, lag, etc. and PS3 will get a little more refined product (I know 360 owners will hear it though, "See! The PS3 is superior in every way!") but we know that those issues have nothing to do with pure hardware horsepower. Both systems are powerhouses.
I have to admit though, it is not looking too good for Sony. They also need to muzzle their loudmouth executives from talking all that S#@$. It is not helping.

I am sitting this launch out and seeing what happens. If Sony does not sell enough PS3s, they will not have as many grade A titles as MS and I will stick with the 360 and Wii.

So, with the announed delays of a few games today, I think that brings the total "launch day" titles to 18; isn't that the same amount the X360 had on Day-One too?

And hey, is it just me, or does it seem that if you take the last digit off a sequal title, that most of the games are similar to the launch of the X360 too (EA's flagship sports, Ridge Racer, Need for Speed, Call of Duty, and Tony Hawk).

I sure hope Resistance is all it's suppossed to be

I really love the M$ fanboys who love saying "Owned". I'm not a fanboy (I have money, and we all know fanboys are created because they can't afford more than one console, so they hide that by saying they only love one console), but no one can say owned untill the PS4 comes out and this gen (Being the 360,Wii,PS3) has ended.

Launch titles aren't always amazing, but im sure resistance can hold it's own against anything out there.

And the 360 was the only next gen console out smartass, of course they seem worth while because there is nothing (Besides the PC) which could of matched it.

Besides majority of the people in North America won't have one at launch so what does it matter?

    @GrimBee

that's what you're going to get with anything on the ps3. i'm not trying to bash the system, what they have on it looks amazing... unfortunately it's stuff that we've already played to death (or at least i have in the case of oblivion).

and mgs4 will most likely come out on 360 later on down the road (look at what mgs2 did, gc and xbox) so it looks like the only game worth buying a ps3 for is ffxiii. which is saying much at this point.

wow! isnt this game like a year old now?... i wish it wasnt the same kind of game with graphical updates, i dont wanna pay $600 for that! I want new, fresh and exciting games! not games which are already fantastic on TWO other platforms for much less moola.

    MGS4! COME ON!!

Buying a console on launch, IMO, is about the stupidest thing ever. I waited a year to get a PS2 and I'll wait a year to get the PS3. At this time I won't have to worry whether or not I can get one and there will be more games out. The only system I possibly cared to get at launch is a Wii, mostly because of the retro gaming, which I think my daughter would enjoy. Nonetheless, I'll be waiting to purchase one of those as well.

Some people don't make any sense, they make lame jokes like "LOL! PS3 fanboys will be playing a year old game" but I'm sure these same stupid dou......s can't wait for the expansion. What's the difference really? Most people yak about how many hours they have spent playing Oblivion already, and up until recently they didn't consider the game "OMGZLAWL OLDED". Either way I still consider Oblivion a good game in its own, but not a great Elder Scrolls game. I could of sworn TES games were RPG's, Oblivion made me question that.

  • ricsuave

    Posted Nov 9, 2006 7:44 pm PT

I swear, if you didn't know their history you would think Sony never launched a console before.

  • mattbyrnes

    Posted Nov 9, 2006 7:37 pm PT

Clearly developers are having problems with the PS3. Oblivion was pushed back for the 360, but they are taking a finished game from march and porting it 8 months later. They can't get the game ported in 8 months? Fight Night 3 has been planned since the 360 game and 1 year later it comes out?

Delaying a game a month or so is no big deal but a game that has been released on another, similar console makes no sense to me. It looks like Sony has created another problem machine for developers. I hope Sony drops to 3rd in this generation so they get their heads out of their @$$es and learn how to make a friendly console that has features their customers want.

I am sorry but if a game scores lower than a 8.0 it may still be fun but it has some serious flaws that you have to live with. Most games are not worth the money if they score less than an 8. After a price drop though they are a better value.
