BVG unveils new Wii, DS shop

Fall Line Studio will focus on creating "innovative games" featuring Disney characters solely for the Mario Factory's two platforms.

Buena Vista Games has set up a new studio to develop games exclusively for the Nintendo Wii and DS. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, Fall Line Studio will make both all-original titles and games based on existing Disney characters and television shows. Its mission statement is to work on primarily "small-team, creative projects that leverage the Disney brand in new and innovative ways."

BVG is the video game publishing arm of the Walt Disney Company, whose animation properties inspired recent best-sellers from third-party publishers like Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts II and THQ's Cars. BVG owns a suite of studios itself, including Propaganda Games in Vancouver and Avalanche Software, also in Salt Lake City. The company's acquisition of UK studio Climax Racing last month and today's announcement further expands its in-house development talent.

Fall Line Studio's new studio vice president and general manager will be Scott Novis, previously GM of Rainbow Studios (MX vs. ATV Unleashed). "BVG has an excellent management team, a can-do corporate culture and a treasure trove of great intellectual properties that make it exciting for us to start something new," said Novis in a statement.

If they are that obese, then maybe the Wii is exactly what they need.... I myself could stand to take off 50 pounds or so.... already got my Wii pre-ordered..

Let's see what kind of games this new studio comes up with. I really hope that they manage to take advantage of the features of the Wii and the DS and make fun games to play with.

Innovation is the key to success these days. Times have changed since the 8-bit days.

Meh...these games don't interest me. And the one thing that spoiled all the Kingdom Hearts games was all the disney characters. It felt like they put them in because they were paid to, not because it actually made the game any better.

Kaintae, I couldn't disagree more. Kingdom Hearts was cool because of the disney characters. At the same time, you really have to think that this will result in nothing more than a bunch of Donald Duck, Going Quackers type license games that will only pollute the Wii and DS library.

This would clearly result in a large increase in Disney software for the Wii and DS. Well it is a sensible business move on their part as I honestly dont see too many children with a PSP, PS3 or Xbox360 anytime this century.

Well this can only be good news.....first off we know Square Enix is backing the Wii with Dragon Quest Swords and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Now that we hear that Buena Vista is also interested in making Wii games, nobody can be blamed to think that Kingdom Hearts would be coming to the Wii.

That's gonna be pretty awesome playing Kingdom Hearts on the Wii....unless you are one of those people who will claim it will make them tired...which pretty much means you are either a) extremely ignorant of how to play on the Wii because they haven't seen any of the testers playing Zelda on the Wii or Madden or b) so obese that they actually have a legitimate excuse (which I don't blame...I mean, it would be pretty hard).

It will all depend on the IP for me. I'm not a big Disney fan, but they do put out some good games on occasion ( Alladen and Lion King on SNES were excellent). Plus, since it's the Buena Vista arm of Disney, that doesn't necessarily limit the games to existing Disney's "kiddie" IPs.

Innovative games? I like Kingdom Hearts because of Square Enix's Final Fantasy themes. But without Square Enix, Kingdom Hearts would have sucked like any other kiddy Disney games.

Isn't thrilling in and of itself, but it's possible that other companies may open studios that design specifically for the nontraditional controlling platforms.

While I do roll my eyes at some of the nonsense that will probably come out of this...

we have gotten a lot of Great must own games (and a few just really good titles) based off of Disney licenses in the past.

Mickey Mania, Kingdom Hearts Series, Aladdin (genesis), etc...

But yeah, they can't all be winners. For every Mickey Mania we get, we recieve two Goofy's Historical History Tour... ewww....

Ska, if you read the article it says:

"...Fall Line Studio will make both all-original titles and games based on existing Disney characters and television shows."

This means they will just be doing Disney games. The sentence could be rephrased as "...existing Disney characters and Disney television shows," but the way they worded it is preferable because it would be redundant otherwise.

Dace, if you read the article it says:

So it looks as if they wont just be doing Disney games; though I'm sure that will be the primary product for the company.
