Harker puts stake in next-gen consoles

Vampire-hunting game from the Collective is based on story of Dracula; blood-sucking action title scheduled for 2008.

Just in time for the frightfests of Halloween, the Collective (The Da Vinci Code, the upcoming Dirty Harry) today announced Harker, a new survival horror game inspired by the classic tale of Dracula. No specific platforms were mentioned in the Collective's release but screenshots accompanying it were subtitled "360_dbg," indicating an Xbox 360 version is in the works.

Gamers will wield wooden stakes as Jonathan Harker, the protagonist in the novel Dracula. However, the Collective's version of Harker comes packing attitude reminscent of the movie Van Helsing. When his love Mina becomes a victim of Dracula, Harker adopts the "this time it's personal" mantra and goes on a vampire-slaying spree.

"Harker's goal is to bring an in-your-face, visceral, and personal style of combat to the survival horror genre," said the game's producer, Nigel Cook. "None of these vampires are going to die with one shot. They're going to fight for their survival, which will give the player a huge level of satisfaction when they successfully execute one."

Said vampires will come in different shapes and sizes and have unique abilities. To combat the pale heliophobic enemies, Harker will be able to use a variety of weapons and bits and pieces from the environment, as well as a close-combat system that the Collective says is "brutally effective in the execution of the vampires."

Harker has not yet been rated or priced and is scheduled for release in 2008.

Does any1 miss the buffy fighting style that the collective had in the 1st buffy game on xbox, i thought it kicked way more ass then buffy's fighting in the 2nd game, hopefully harker will have a good fighting engine like buffy

Graphic looks so so... not really showing the power of today's graphical power to the maximum. There is a fat chance that this game is released for the 360 not for PS3... but we'll see.

This game sounds great, Dracula is a truly rich source of material and is a brilliant novel. However, as iconic as Dracula is in popular culture, very rarely does anyone remain faithful to the book (Damn you, Coppola). I would love to see a game or movie treat the novel faithfully. This game, while sounding quite cool, is clearly not faithful at all. Harker looks like Wolverine for one thing, and since when did Mina actually become a vampire?

Oh well, it's just a game.

So, are they just taking their Buffy The Vampire Slayer engine and (I'm so sorry for this...) REVAMPING IT!?

Seriously, though, the Buffy games were pretty cool and the engine handles Final Fight-style action in 3D fairly well. They showed that they could adapt it to more adventure-ish gameplay with their Indiana Jones game and this looks like it'll be no different.

Do we know who's publishing it or should the publisher remain as "_No Company"? That's a display error that's being worked on--there is no publisher at the moment. The Collective probably announced the game in order to try and get one.

More Dracula bull****! How can I put this: The only thing Vlad did in Transylvania was his birth and his subsequent arrest by a magyar backstabber... In fact, if memory serves me right, I don't think Vlad spent only the first 5 years of his childhood in Transylvania and this Dracula crap is related FAR MORE to a Teutonic knights order of the middle ages than Transylvania. Sheesh!
