PS3 pushing SCE $1.71 billion into red

Sony CEO tells press conference that the game division's fiscal-year losses will be double previous estimates.

Last week, Microsoft announced its financial results for the quarter ending September 30, 2006. As usual, its game division lost money--a lot of money. For the July-September quarter, the company's Entertainment and Devices division, which makes the Xbox 360, lost $96 million--an improvement over the $173 million the company lost during the same quarter in 2005.

Today, one of Microsoft's rivals in the game arena announced that it too would take a loss on its own game division. Speaking at a press conference in Tokyo, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer announced that losses at Sony Computer Entertainment are expected to now total 200 billion yen--or around $1.71 billion--for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2007. The figure is nearly twice the shortfall Sony originally projected.

"Considering some of the additional costs of PlayStation 3, we have to generate some excitement and profits from elsewhere in the company to offset the performance of PlayStation 3," Stringer told the Reuters news service.

One reason cited for the increased costs is Sony's decision to drop the price of the lower-end PS3 model in Japan. At last month's Tokyo Game Show, the company announced it would lower the price of the 20GB version of the next-gen console from 60,000 yen (about $515) to 49,980 yen (about $429).

Despite the increased cost, Stringer expressed confidence that the PS3 will be a success. "The point really is that PlayStation 3 is already finished and has been tested in America and has been deemed a creative success," he said. "In the end that is what counts."

The executive also expressed apparent befuddlement about some gamers' anger that the PS3 launch was pushed back to March 2007 in Europe. "I think the idea of worrying about a delay in PlayStation is slightly strange to me," said Stringer. "Every complex technology runs the risk of delays."

    ...Then a Cdplayers brand launched a new console,i played it and then a giant software house from PC land launched a console,sega stoped making games
    sonic on nintendo machines how can any of us predict what is going to happen the only thing i learned in gaming hardware its that its better to sit tight and wait.. always

Like I was saying all along they know how to market and do their jobs. People are talking as if this is all new to Sony. I guess some people must of forgotten about PS 1 & PS2. SHAME SHAME

    Every company, no matter how big or small, has it's dark day. The world of business is constantly changing and expecting a company like SCE to do well with the PS3 purely on sales figures of the PS1 & PS2 is nonsense. Look what happened to Nintendo. They had huge sales of the NES and SNES, but we all know what happened when the N64 came along with it's state of the art graphics and large price tag (remind you of the PS3?).

    To be honest they should have just left the blu ray technology out of the machine. Just give us a choice to buy it like the xbox.

    The games also run on Blue-Ray disc. CD-ROM does not hold enough memory required for PS3 games so this is why they opted for Blue-Ray.

    Just letting you know. To be honest I didn't realise this until recently.

    So all these people saying that Sony cares more about their gamers than Microsoft because of backward compatability(SNOZBERRY AND TRIGUN) are retarted. I bought a NEXT GEN system to play NEXT GEN games, why the HELL is backward compatability some important thing? I will admit it's a nice thing to have (I'm sure id miss halo 2 and some others from the first box) but seriously, over 250 games from Xbox are playable on the 360. 250!! All of the popular ones are backwards compatable (halos, tom clancy games, etc) and out of those 250 games, most people dont even own a 10th! so WHy is it we are caught up on playing games from 97-2005 on our NEXT GENERATION, STATE OF THE ART SYSTEMS??? why is that important?? The only reason some people DO find this important is because they need to trade in their old PSones and Two's towards a Three because it costs 700 FRIGGIN DOLLARS!! If it was cheaper would it matter? Hell no you'd keep your ps2 in a heart beat! Also, you guys are too FRIGGIN lazy!! What, you cant get up and put the PS2 GAME in the PS2 CONSOLE!?!?! Are you seriously so use to convenience that you cant have 2 systems out? WAHH WAHH WAHH I want one system to do EVEYTHING!!! even taking over the wooooorrrrrrlddd!! Muahh huahh huahh haaa!!! I guess you missed the fact that ALL DEVELOPERS have already confirmed that in terms of power, the 2 systems are EQUAL!!!! Not all of us want to watch blu-ray movies, and certainly no way any game is going to take up more 40gb of storage. Seriously, it would have been better for us all generally. I really don't see why we gamers need blu-ray to play games. its stupid.

    Like I said,the point of the Industry is to make money not lose money.
    Sony isn't only in the Red with the PS3 and to bank their faith on Graphics over anything else was fool hearted.

    Sega did this (32X) ,Nintendo did this (N64) Atari did this (Jaguar) 3DO did it (3DO).History has show that an Over powered machine is not guaranteed any sort of victory.Watching this new Gen unfold reminds me 100% of all those past mistakes rolled into one.

    It isn't over for the PS3 not even close but if Sony intends to keep its former 1# spot then they need to get back to the table and make some massive changes soon.

    To all gamers: Lets kick it to the curb all of this bickering about which console is better. The fact is just like all consumer products, cars, homes, clothes, no mater what you purchase you get what you want. If you are spending the money then of course you are going to buy the product you like the most. So that is the bottom line in this whole debate. As far as which console is better than the other is not determined by the specs or power of the system as we all know. The winner is always the one who sells the most consoles and sells the most games, and that we will not know for a while yet. So why not let us stick to giving each other facts and important information. Then when the smoke clears and the winner is know then you can stick it the face of whoever you want. After the first 6 to 12mo. of the ps3 launch we will have at least an idea of who the winner will be.

    Capcom USA are putting a stranglehold on capcom japan saying all games like Lost Planet ,Dead Rising are 360 exclusives and msoft don't charge third party fees or royalties fees to devs who makes exclusives for 360,but ps3 you still have to pay exlcusive or not,,So capcom will be giving xbox 360 all there ps3 games Devil my cry4 etc etc,HA Msoft will win this battle.1080i/1080p 1125i/1125p High def looks sweet

    I will go with the PS3 over xbox360 any day of the week. This is why. PS2 came out before XBOX and is still going strong after XBOX has died. Sony is working hard on backward compatability for PS3 while for Xbox360 it is an afterthought. Things like this build customer loyalty. I'm not going to throw that out the window to save 200 dollars on initial investment. At some point there will be a PS3 in my home.

If this holds true then I want you to go to your local television "news" site/station, this is the "news" section if I read right? Here is what I want you to do. Tell them that I realize that you guy's are journalist and probably went to school to get degrees, but could you not report anything that doesn't purtain particularly to their lives, so if they have not themselves been murdered or sent to war or raped or had a bad day on wall street, then don't freakin' report because then it is considered an opinion. Which the last time I checked has not been taken away from anyone living in America or wherever you are posting from that you can freely go on this site and give one. Gamespot is a one stop shop for gaming news and reviews. Sony suffering losses which given the right circumstances shut down the gaming division of the company and us as gamers losing an important entity in the gaming, with which we would not have the advancements that we have in gaming. They made people namely MS step up their game with the 360 and say bring it on, but you are going to have to work for it. MS stepped things up by making a very versatile system that can be made to compete with the on paper monster that is the PS3. We need all three companys to succeed for there to continue to be advancement in the video gaming console field.     LOL this is funny. This PS3 thing is getting blown way out of proportion. To make a long story short the fact of the matter is simply this: No matter what you will have a PS3 in ur homes. So for everyone that has negative comments just try to remember all the negative posts you posted before PS3 launched. PS3 will sell no matter the price. PS3 is the better gaming system no matter the competitors. Its all about what suits you. Sony knows their audience. Use your heads. Do you actually think Sony is sitting back biting their thumbs wondering if their system is gonna flop? Their not rookies. They know the game. They know what their up against. Huh, think about it. Why do you think they released XBox so early. To get a head start in the console race they know they wont win. Show people a couple of game trailers with tight images and tell them its the next gaming platform people began to drowl. And if ur too impatient to wait for a PS3 than you will have a XBox 360 in ur homes. Out with the old and in with the new. Its like you can have a bike or you can have a bike with jets, or you can have the bike that flys, only you have to wait another year before you can get it. What do you think the vast major is gonna select. The bike with Jets, Exactly. But you will have those that will wait for the bike that flys.Microsoft knows they dont have the better console, they just want that 15 minutes of fame. I mean Its easy to be on top when you dont have any competitors for a whole year. Next Gen compared to PS2 for a whole year. Which system looks better? Which system runs better? Stevie Wonder can see that. But it all boils down this: You can start strong but its all about the company that finishes harder. Lets see how well PS3 does when its been out for a year.     But in short what my post was all about how disappointed, how sick, how much shame I am at all of you.

    This has gone beyond fanboyism.

    You have started wishing for the downfall of a company.

    SCE is a division of Sony.

    I'm convinced that most of you are 10 year olds. I'm also upset dissappointed at Gamespot for posting anything business related onto a game review site.

    In my original post I went onto a rant about how you people rot in hell, for reasons for wanting a company to do bad. When did gamers become so concieted and started acting this way?

    In a time where right Ford and few companies are doing massive layoffs, you all are wishing for a company to do bad.

    You all make me sick, you better hope that none of you work for a company that get contracts from sony. You better not have a parent that works for sony or works in a company that is a business partner of sony.

    Really, you people. Arghh I can't even summarize what I wrote in my other post cause of how sick and disgusted I am at all of you.

    You people are not gamers, what you guys are, you gus are !#%$!#. P.S. to whoever it was that posted that if the Sony dies that some of the exclusives that are being release on the PS3 go to the 360 after the system dies, you are dreaming, one or two of them might be brought to the 360 but not all of them, cause remember when it's exclusive, it's under exclusive license agreement. That does not expire till a 3-5 year cycle.

    i just have questions i want people to comment on. How does the X-Box 360 deliver High Definition. Is it through HDMI? Because Sony has HDMI. The reason Sony is costing so much is because of Blu-Ray. A Blu-Ray alone costs $1000. So if ur a entertainment junky such as myself than ur actually saving on the PS3. So if you think of it we are really paying for Blu-Ray technology. Do we care about the way a game looks if game play is crappy? So the question is how many of us really care about the way the games look as far as games being delivered in HD? I mean without HD TV's how will the games look? Its alot to look at. It all depends on what suits U, the gamer. I mean lets be real, we all see the one's complaining about the price but in the end we will all have a PS3. Think on this. When has Sony not delivered in terms of game consoles an video games. They ALWAYS have an aray of games to choose from. Now tell me I'm making all of this up Sony is just better. They run the industry (till this day), because they know what they are doing. I'm gonna stick with them until they show me otherwise. I mean I love Sony but they are leeches when it comes to their products. I mean its Sony Playstation not the Panasonicstation. Sony=$$$$ and we already know this before buying.     This is really dumb. It cost roughly 500 dollars to get a ps2 at launch and Sony was investing a ton of money into their new product then. Nothing changes. They are not screwed.

    Have I asked this already? Has anyone seen the London bridge video from Stacy (Fergie) Fergison on music television? Man if that woman isn't gods gift than I don't know what would be. When she is wearing barelyshorts, that is what I call shorts that can barely be considered and the button up shirt and tie. Man, she makes me long for the single life again and that I was someone that could get her attention. Anyway thought we may need a change of subject. And to see if anyone was paying attention.

    and last is blu-ray really going to take off??? games aren't really bigger than 6 to 8gb not even really that...!!! why do you need nearly 40gb of disk space? ok grate for backing up files software and all that... what are you going to put in a game that takes up 40gb???? come on sony i wanna know please tell me? i know all your new titles are not even close to 10gb so why blu-ray?"

    Xbox 360 games cost $50(select titles)-$60. PS3 games just cost a flat rate of $60. And the graphics are not the same. The PS3 does have noticeably have better graphics.

    I can tell your well informed... Resistance: Fall of Man currently takes up around 17 gb of space. A launch title. There's no way a game like that could be on any other format other then Blu-Ray.

    Half of you are jsut a bunch of Xbox fan boys **** about the PS3. Get a life already!!

    And this crap about blu-ray is the only thing keeping the PS3 alive, what about the PS3 exclusive games? They are the entire point of the console. Resistance:Fall of Man, Killzone 2, Devil May Cry 4, etc. How about you wait until it comes out before you start complaining about the console.

    I personally don't see how sony are going to do well... ok we all know that there are die hard Playstation fans dang i was one of them but then when the xbox came out i had a ps2

    like better graphics on the xbox more games on the ps2.

    Has anyone seen the London bridge video from Stacy (Fergie) Fergison on music television? Man if that woman isn't gods gift than I don't know what would be. When she is wearing barelyshorts, that is what I call shorts that can barely be considered and the button up shirt and tie. Man, she makes me long for the single life again and that I was someone that could get her attention. Anyway thought we may need a change of subject. And to see if anyone was paying attention.
