100,000 Xbox 360s sold in Oz

Console finds traction down under, say data trackers GfK Australia; group charts 400,000 games sold to date.

SYDNEY--The Xbox 360 is officially the fastest-selling home game console in Australian history, moving more than 100,000 units in the seven months since launch, data trackers GfK Australia say.

The Xbox 360 was first released in Australia on March 23, 2006. GfK figures show that more than 100,000 units have been sold since then, along with more than 400,000 individual games for the system. By comparison, Sony's PlayStation 2 sold 78,000 consoles and 190,000 games in its first seven months in Australia.

While the 360 can now lay claim to being the fastest-selling home console, it is not the overall winner when handheld gaming devices are taken into account--that title goes to Nintendo's GameBoy Advance, which sold more than 128,000 units in its first seven months on sale.

While the 100,000 milestone will likely please local Microsoft execs, the console will face increased competition this holiday season with the December launch of the Nintendo Wii (in Australia). Additionally, Sony is still forecasting it will sell more than 200,000 PS2s down under between October and the end of the year.

Xbox executives declined to disclose a holiday season sales forecast for the 360 in Australia.

    Why is Australia called "Oz"

    Because we have winged monkeys.

No really, cos its pronounce Ozzy, not O-see like Americans say it.

It might be a small number but dont forget, we are a country the size of USA but we only have 20 million people.

The numbers are actually pretty good and the software sell through is unbelievable. Australians love adopting new technology. I think we have something like 12 million mobile (Cell for you Yanks, ) phones. Thats like 60% of the population.

But people have to relize that there were less gamers in when the PS2 launched, but still those numbers are quite high.

I had no idea how small the Australian market really is. There are more 360 consoles sold through in Japan. ---

If the PS2 didn't dominate there what makes you think the $1000 PS3 will there? Wait until the PS3 falls flat in the sales dept. Then you will really hear 360 fanboys

The PS2 dominates there albeit it had a slower start, since debuted at a higher price than the 360 at launch there. $749 versus $649. Regardless of how the PS3 performs, fanboy voices are loud and clear already.

Those are surprising numbers but I don't think I've ever run across and Australian people on Live. But hey, its good that the 360 is doing well down there.

This is amazing, I am from south africa and I know alot of people in australia. Both of these countries are Playstation Zombies, though they dont sell that much since they have insame prices compared to here, PS2 their is about $250-$300. However if you can afford you almost always get the playstation, MS selling 100 000 in 7 months is a very big deal, it shows that MS is doing much better than with the original xbox (may it rest is soul), my point is, if MS is doing very good on sony turf, then the 360 stands a good chance to give the PS3 a run for its money.

Yeah they might sell 200K PS2s considering they pricedthe PS3 at 1grand. How many PS3's will Australia be getting? Probably won't be enough to overtake the 360 as the fastest selling console to launch. The only real competition will come from the Wii.

I would, by all accounts, be considered a MS fanboy, however, I threw my allegiance to Sony at one time. Then they proved to care more about $$$ than customers or quality. I also haven't owned a Nintendo system since the NES. However, I can easily see this generation as being a dead-draw. No one will really win, no one will really lose. I see each system with its own niche, and loyal fan-base. However, I think that Nintendo will indeed win in sales, with most people either for the 360 or PS3, and each one choosing the WII as a second system....we'll see.

why is this ammunition for any of you to sling at each other? It's not that big of a deal -- heck, it's Australia! No offense to Australia, but you're not exactly as big as NA, EU, or Japan.

Winning sales in Australia is kinda like wining them in Canada.....yeah, it's nice and all, but nothing HUGE. Quit talking like this news improves your daily life. ....hmm, that's not a bad line....

lol The 360 and the Game boy sold more then Sony's PS2 in a 7 month Launch period. The PS2 will sell more then the PS3 for 7 months and more in every region, does make the PS3 a failure too?

Sony has turned me into a 360 fanboy but i'm still a realist and know that the PS3 will sell well but I think it will take years for the PS3 to catch up and even then I think market share will be about even.

That would equal a win for microsoft considering the % market share they had last generation compared to this one.

360 doing very well, good for them because its about time ms got some recognition for this awesome console.

i hope it beats PS3, and it probably will.. since their basically identical systems, except 360 has better GFX
