US PC Game charts: October 8-14
World of Warcraft wins again as Dark Crusade and Desperate Housewives debut strong.
When Buena Vista Games announced that it was releasing a PC game based on Desperate Housewives, the title instantly became the subject of widespread derision. However, according to the latest list of top-selling PC games, the publisher may be having the last laugh. According to industry research firm The NPD Group, Desperate Housewives was the sixth most popular PC game in the US during the week of October 8-14, besting both Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (seventh) and Age of Empires III (ninth).
Desperate Housewives wasn't the only new game on the chart. The top debut of the week was the Dark Crusade expansion pack for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. The M-rated add-on, which will apparently be the first of several expansions for the THQ game, debuted in second place, just behind perennial favorite World of Warcraft. Once again, Blizzard Entertainment's massively multiplayer online role-playing game was the top title in the land, its sales still robust despite being nearly two years on the market.
WOW wasn't the only returnee in the PC top 10 during the week. The Sims 2: Glamour Life Stuff expansion pack landed in third, ahead of Company of Heroes (fourth) and the original Sims 2 (fifth). Thanks to a reduced average retail price of $15, Quake 4 reentered the chart in 10th place, below newcomer Reel Deal Slots Mystic Forest (eighth).
Falling out of the chart this week were Caesar IV, SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition, Guild Wars Factions, Cars: Radiator Springs Adventure, and Warcraft III: Battlechest.
