No Gamerscores for PS3

Bragging score akin to Xbox 360's Gamerscore and Achievements won't appear on the PlayStation 3.

One way to tell if someone has been logging some serious hours on their Xbox 360 is to check their Gamerscore. The feature tracks how many Achievements--various game goals set by developers--gamers accomplish by assigning each task a numerical score. By adding up all the numbers, gamers get their Gamerscore and bragging rights (provided they didn't buy it).

The feature has been a surprise success for the Xbox 360, with gamers playing games they otherwise wouldn't solely to try to boost their scores.

With its success, many thought Sony would mimic the system for its upcoming PlayStation 3. It was even once rumored that Sony's system would be called "Entitlements," causing a bit of a row among Microsoft fans.

Now it appears that Sony isn't jumping on the bandwagon. According to Wired.com, Jack Tretton, executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has said that achievements, entitlements, or whatever else they may be called, will not be a part of the PS3's program.

When asked about the prospect, Tretton said, "We didn't mention that, but it is our intention that we would have it--although I think it would be game-centric. It's very difficult to draw analogies [between] your success on SOCOM and your success on Madden. Madden players care about peoples' success on Madden."

So instead of having one score across all games, it appears Sony is opting for glorified leaderboards for each game.

"So the publisher [of each game] will have the flexibility to have a robust ranking system, on a game-by-game basis," said Tretton. "The intention right now is not to have something that is pan-platform. We do intend to do that with our [first-party] stuff."

Tretton also admitted that the ranking system would not be included in the launch games. Sony had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

tbh im glad. i got a 360. but after 2months i noticed i just spent 600pound on games. only 3 i wanted ... and only 2 i was glad i bought the other 20 (bought loads of 10-20pound ones) just for the gamerscore. but then got pissed off all the time when there was one i couldnt get but i tryed really hard (historian on bioshock for example. and 100% corruption on overlord)
as it was really frustrating when the only way u can get that 1 is to replay the game. so after getting COD2 for 5pound and did half of it on veteran but i just didnt have the paience. so i sold my 360 and all the games for 600pound.
bought a ps3 (yay!!!) then i see this **** aboot the entitlements and i didnt want to hear it. it made me buy loads of games i didnt want to a while back. i dont want it again. i just want to get the few games i did want and go from there.

so glad i didnt waste anouther 600pound to find out i gutta resell it.
... so now it turns out im moving from england to canda. I GUTTA GET A NEW **** PC. NEW CONSOLE. because canadian games dont work on british systems. luckily that dont work like that for PSPs =D

gamerscores are dumb, achievements are cool. like, it's cool to get achievments and stuff when you do something cool, but the scoring system is retarted because it's not based on skill, every game has 1000 points and every xbla game has a couple hundred i think, you could get the same amount of points for finishing the first level in one game as you get for unlocking everything in another game.

Hey "the-ace" - 360 also has internal ranks for each game, along with the cool gamerscore. And no, once you get an achievement on 360, you can't earn it again. Each game has 1000 achievement points, and unfortunately the launch titles were pretty easy, but the developers have learned how to make difficult, fun achievements. "The-ace" you should actually sit down and play a 360 before you talk about how much better sony is this go-around. PS3 is only worth $600 if you desparately need a blue-ray player. I'm not saying that PS3 sucks; it will outlast the 360 most-likely. All I'm saying is make the right choice, get a wii and a 360 for the same price as a ps3. 360 has a ton of fun games now, while ps3 is launching with squat. Wii is just totally awesome. PS3 will be awesome once its price drops and some of the anticipated games launch, but that won't be until 2007.

at least they make fair scores rather than easy-to-get scores that the x360 provides
when somebody is good at a game ,his rank increases in the SAME game.
not like the x360 which anyone could play the same game endlessley and get tons of scores that apply to all games. LOL.
that's a step ahead for sony.

JoeyDrey is absolutely right they mean nothing at all, i seen a guy who got 1000 points from Open Season...that crap is a little kids movie i mean seriously, if a little kid did it then sure cool, but someone else like a teen or above, to boost a meaningless score i mean come on...but wwf is right too, they do make it fun like if im playing madden and get bored ill just mess around and try to get them, but i wouldnt spend 60 bucks for 1000 meaningless points comeon!! there are guys who have probably spent thousands to get their gamerscore up when its useless, please people, get real.....and im glad PS3 aint doing it....and good for M$...they are cashing in on the feature that wasnt even a sales tactic......

alright achievements are a good thing but i dont really care about em. Yes someitmes they give the game lasting appeal that wouldnt be there as some achievements provide extra challanges....beyond that i dont much care about it, as i play the games for fun and not for the score...i dont much care if ps3 is not going to have anything like it since im not even sure if its worth paying 600+game+tax+moregames for it

Often the achievements that you haven't gotten give you hints as to other things to do, that you may not have thought of otherwise.

Very helpful and an extra challenge to try and experiment with things the developer thought you might find interesting.

What's wrong with that??? Nothing. Achievements are a good thing for many and don't hurt anyone else.

Sony should have included them, but they're online (no official name) service just never got off the ground in a big way. It sounds like it will be slightly better than what the PS2 had.

Not exactly what we were led to believe...

I have to admit that I kinda dig the achievement system in the Xbox 360. I didn't know what to think at first, but then it gets kind of addictive, in the way when you compare games with people on your friend's list and say "oh yeah, I was able to get 1,000,000 on Geometry Wars and these people haven't been able to yet!!". Its kinda cool because alot of times people will be like "oh **** you did that??? I had such a hard time when I tried, do you have any pointers?" Sounds really weird to those that haven't tried it, but you'd be amazed if you gave it a month or two... it really grows on ya.

Either way, PS3 will be fun I'm sure. I hope maybe though... if people start to demand it... that they will do something similar at least... even if people say they copied it or whatever.

    Take care.

I feel like this, the gamerscore is so that even if your not able to rank high in a particular game you can feel like you ranked high in gamerscore points. Thats why games have leaderboards as well, and some games give achievement points for being ranked number 1. The gamescore is a competition everyone has a chance to be number 1 regardless of skill level.

I like the achievements for the X360 but we all know if Sony used this as well, the 360 fans would be hear saying Sony stole Microsofts idea and the flaming would have been outragous. Game scores do mean something as its that "lil extra" that adds to a game.

Who cares about a gamerscore? Seriously, will I get a free game when I achieve a certain score? It's like the points on the old Super Mario Bro. Who cares? The only score I'm worried about is the one at the end of a sports game.

I've got a 360, but I really could care more (less) about my Gamerscore.

My Gs has been 120 for about 5 months. It's not like I haven't tried to get a higher score, which I haven't -- not since I've been spending most of my time playing FFXI, but I suck at first-person shooters, can't stand sports games, and get bored too easily playing the same "arcade" game for too long.

The achievements for FFXI come when you complete all the missions of a module, which is not easy considering that even the first 10 missions of the game can't be completed without getting your character up to level 75 and being in a whole lot of parties. That and each job you get to level 75 gets Gs points. That's it, no intermediate achievement points -- no bone for getting all jobs in the game or getting all your crafting skills to 10. Zip. Give me a break S-E, I've got a life.

Basically all this means is Sony is leaving everything up to the Dev’s and that their “online” service for games is exactly what the PS2 is now.

Also the leader boards on XBL are independent of gamer score in XBL, and the number of rankings for those leader boards are as vast as they are varied

A ranking system on a game-by-game basis interests me more than an overall score (especially when people play games they normally wouldn't just to boost their score). This is also a good thing for Sony. If they had used the gamerscore concept for their online network; X360 fanboys would have been screaming rape!

well over in the UK....Xbox 360 games at alot of places are like £34.99 for the new titles and alot of titles are selling for £17.99 or cheaper... The Cheapest ive seen for any PS3 game was £49.99... Xbox premuim for £259.99 and PS3 selling for over £500 so its pritty close to my orignal thing i said. I dont thing think theres many people who has £500 to spend on a console and then atleast £50 a game its not user friendly at all its just sony looking to make money.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is with gamerscore. I don't have a 360, so I guess I can't really speak to it, but until a high gamerscore can actually earn you something (like say, discounts on marketplace downloads), I just don't understand why people are trying so hard to get high scores. And I think it's completely insane that anyone would pay for such a meaningless number either.
