Sixaxis to tilt several PS3 games
An avalanche of updated press releases reveals new tilt control on many games and...Wii games pricing?
Today Sony is holding a Gamers' Day press event in San Francisco to show off the latest builds of its upcoming PlayStation 3 games. In coordination with the event, the company has released new information on several previously announced games, most involving the tilt-sensitive capabilities of the new Sixaxis controller.
Tony Hawk's Project 8 will use the Sixaxis to control steering, balance, precision foot placement in the Nail the Trick feature, and more. GameSpot recently tested the Sixaxis in the game--read the preview to find out more.
Tilting will be incorporated into Madden NFL 07 as well. By moving the controller in various ways, gamers can fake the snap, jump the snap, control the lead blocker, and bear down on ball carriers with brutal hits. Read GameSpot's preview for more info.
Placing backspin, topspin, and sidespin on the ball in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 for the PS3 just got a bit easier than repeatedly tapping a button. Pushing the controller in the direction gamers want the spin to go will control spin direction, and the longer they hold the tilt, the more spin will be added. GameSpot recently teed off with the PS3 version.
2K Sports recently revealed that NBA 2K7 will use motion sensitivity for its free-throw mechanic, but it appears as though Sony is taking it a bit further. In NBA 07, jerking the Sixaxis back and forth will control dribbling moves such as crossovers, spins, and jukes, as well as perform moves in the post.
Hockey fans will also move the controller back and forth to control their goalkeepers in 2K Sports' NHL 2K7. When entering the first-person view in the crease-control system, gamers will control the cursor by tilting the controller, thereby thwarting slapshots from goons. The Sixaxis' tilt sensitivity will also be used to check opposing players, but it is optional. For more details, read GameSpot's preview of NHL 2K7 for the PS3.
While gamers have known for a while that Blazing Angels will use the Sixaxis' new feature, they didn't know they could also turn it off. For those worried about carpal tunnel syndrome from too many barrel rolls, the tilt sensitivity can be turned off and the classic controls used. It's currently unclear how many PS3 games will also make tilt sensitivity an option.
Blazing Angels will also feature a new multiplayer mode that lets competing teams try to attack each other's bases in the shortest amount of time possible. This brings the total number of multiplayer modes in the PS3 version to 13.
Fighting fans looking for some super-high-definition beatdowns got some disappointing news today. It appears as though the highly anticipated Virtua Fighter 5 will max out at a 720p resolution, not the PS3's highly touted 1080p.
Tucked away in the press release for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a listing of prices for the game. While the $59.99 price tag for the PS3 version isn't surprising, the game's price on another platform deserves a double take. Activision lists the game as costing $49.99 on the Wii, which appears to confirm what the publisher hinted at before--that third-party Wii games would generally be priced at $49.99. For the record, first-party Wii games will also cost $49.99.

I think Wii's Wii-mote is more versatile than PS3's sixaxis, ergo more uses can be found to it than to PS3's. But, eventually, we gamers will want to have old-fashion gaming from time to time. Being the whole time moving the controller from here to there and so on could be tiring. I'm really glad at PS3's controller-tech and can't wait to hold it. As for Wii's, interesting thing but I don't see myself holding my arms up ALL THE TIME to, for example, shoot aliens in Metroid.

Amen Moonsault, it really does get old around here. Anyone with a brain can tell the difference between a controller that senses in six degrees versus one that senses in 32 degrees. The funny part is going to be when the PS3's games use the six degrees more creatively than the Wii mote. Nothing against Nintendo, I can't wait to try it out, but I believe that gimmick will get old very quickly.

Do you really believe Sony copied Nintendo's idea? The technology for both is totally different and the patent for it is dated before Nintendo announced it... stop your crying and this goes to EVERYONE who brings this up as if it's something personal to them... shut up.

ok im mad at sony!!!!!!!! they should really learn to make up their own ideas, cuz its gettin so frigggin annoying. they're just getting ideas from everywhere and throwing them into the ps3 just to make it seem better. Sony, get this straight--even the sixaxis is motion sensored, it will be far from the wii's controllers which are 1000x more awesome. ok?????? And, one more things to say: Sony, lower those friggin prices!!!!! everythings's so exspensive!!!!! it ridiculous!!! And stop being nintendo wannabes

cannibal mentioned the fact that the motion sensing was only showed off at E3, so that's why developers haven't gotten a chance to implement it well... to me that sounds like Sony added it in at the last minute. Hmmm. I bet they could have added rumble if Nintendo would have revealed the motion sensing Wii-mote earlier. Sony didn't have time to make a perfect controller.

The system can do 1080p and they have already announced games that will support it. They're just saying here that Virtua Fighter 5 will not support higher than 720p. Which is fine since not many people have 1080p TVs anyways.

720p does not sound right. The system can still do 1080p, right?

It's good news that you can turn off the motion sensing, Because at first it will feel weird, so most of us gamers will take us time to get use to it.

They cant ever put the rumble feature into the controller because then develoeprs have to make a game based on what people have. there is no way to tell what customer has what controller so therefor it only hurts the consumer. once things are out in the public that other people produce products for, its too difficult to change it based on that part alone.

Since the controller idea is fairly new, and wasn't even mentioned until E3 2006, I think a lot of developers didn't get to incorporate it into their games in a way that they'd like to. Within a few months of launch, games should be taking FULL advantage of the controller. This is of course my opinion and only speculation.

All of these motion sensing features for the Sixaxis play a very small roll in these games. I see the force feedback as outweighing the limited motion sensing capabilites. Unless Sony actually puts it in a game and makes it worth while, rather than an after thought like in most of these titles.

Anyone know why they are calling it the 6 axis? yaw pitch roll and two for each analog stick.......i count 7. or does it not detect yaw? If so i still need a flight stick for warhawk.

this sixaxis actually sounds to be safer bet than the Wiimote...........
Yeah... I would prefer no motion sensing but I guess I'll take what I can get. As for the Wii, I don't think people realize how much it is going to suck to swing your arm around for hours on end.

assuming motion-control makes fun games, i see a motion-sensing controller working less well than the wii remote.
but hey, each game will be judged on its own.

Keep it up guys! lol. Latch on to stuff like the Wii's game pricing and the resolution information instead of the list of games effectively using the tilt sensor! lolololol. you know your a fanboi when you commented another system's article, and didn't even mention the topic of it. (like the last 3 posts below me lol)

Sony said their system was capable of 1080p, and thus had a resolution advantage (now about to disappear) over the 360's video output. But they never promised that all their first and third party games would be 1080p products, right? Think of the pipeline. If I'm a smaller developer making a "next-gen" game to run on both systems, I sure as heck can't afford to assign a different texture/asset pipeline to the PS3 version--so I'm going to enter at 720p for the 360 version and stay there for the PS3 version, and I'm still a "high-def" game. You can blame the 360 for that phenomenon. We'll see how things change with development as MS patches the machine up to its 1080p support.

Well leave it to Sony to promise games in 1080p and then when it really comes down to it they only deliver 720p. They touted their system as the only 1080p game system and now their games aren't even going to be 1080p. They were saying Xbox 360 didn't measure up well now who's talking, has anyone here seen the graphics on Gears of War, now thise are some sick graphics. I sick of Sony's empty promises. They always promise things they can't deliver. Please Sony at least realize that you need to follow through with some of your promises.

Uh, excuse me but, what the hell? Hasn't Sony been claiming 1080p for everything? What happened to the claims that 720 wasn't 'true' HD?

i like how all the good news stories about Sony like this one attract so many fanbois... For half the people below me... the tilt isn't what's defining the PS3... they have it as a more natural and physical extra button AND NOTHING ELSE. Stop saying "oh but the Nintendo Wii can sense in 3DDDD space! Stupid tilt can't do that."
What's defining the PS3 are the GAMES. There's at least 10 games (proven franchises or not) that YOU KNOW you can already see yourselves buying and playing. If a mere control mechanic like tilt was what the PS3 was centered on, that'd be pretty sad, considering it has so many other things it can emphasize now.
for proof, see: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/740/740601p1.html
In a way... One has to invest in the POTENTIAL of both systems when buying them... It's just that when the Ps3 is proving its potential so readily that fanbois who stick to the notion that the Wii is still the underdog (even though the PS3 is now, but NO ONE wants to admit that of course) that they feel threatened enough to post comments about how it "sux".

"lol ps3 not only copied nintendo with the same games but also the sixaxis is better. Think about it. This is cause its conventional, yet innovative. The wii controller is ONLY innovative, with little room for conventionalism. Sony got lucky copying nintendo. "
********************************************************************************
Ok that's just completely wrong. Sony's Sixaxis can sense motion in 6 differnet directions. The WiiRemote can sense motion in 3D space -meaning it senses your actual motion. That means that a motion made by the player can be translated right into the game. It also has a speaker and rumble feature that farther immerse the player into a game. That means if you are playing a baseball game you can actually hear the swing of the bat and feel the force of the ball as it hits the bat. If you were playing the same game with the Sixaxis, how would you swing the bat? You can only tilt the controler in one of six directions. That would hardly feel the same as swinging a bat. That doesn't sound too conventional does it. The WiiRemote can not only sense the motion but also the speed of the swing. The Sixaxis is hardly innovative seeing as how a similar control has been out since 1999 and it's actually better since it actually has a rumble feature. So tell me again how is it exactly is the Sixaxis better?
