PS3 accessories, Blu-ray bundle revealed

HDMI cable, memory card adaptor, Blu-ray remote, and extra Sixaxis controllers to be sold separately; console will come with BD of Talladega Nights.

In conjunction with its Gamers' Day event being held in San Francisco today, Sony revealed the first accessories for the PlayStation 3. The initial batch of add-ons for the next-generation console, which launches in the US on November 17, will be relatively modest, consisting of just four devices.

First up is the PS3 HDMI cable, which many high-definition televisions require to display graphics in 1080p resolution. The omission of the cable from the basic PS3 package caused a bit of a stir when it was first revealed in August, and its price probably won't help matters. The PS3 HDMI cable will sell for $49.99, higher than most HDMI cables on eBay (which can go for as low as $9.99), but lower than the "generic" PS3/360 HDMI cable that was listed on GameStop for $99.99. However, since the PS3 has a standard HDMI port, any HDMI cable should work with the console.

Far more affordable is the PS3 Memory Card Adapter, which will retail for $14.99. Though not necessary for saving PS3 games, the adapter is required for loading game saves from old PlayStation 2 and PlayStation memory cards. The PS3 is fully backward compatible with both consoles, and PS2 and PlayStation games will be made available for download Xbox Live Arcade style via the PlayStation Network Platform.

Sony will let gamers purchase extra units of the PS3's Sixaxis controller for $49.99 each. With its built-in Bluetooth wireless connectivity, the PS3 will support up to seven controllers at once, without a next-gen equivalent of a multitap extension.

As it did with the PlayStation 2, Sony is selling the media remote for the PS3 separately. The Blu-ray Disc Remote will go for $29.99 and will provide single-button controls for most of the PS3's media functionality.

Speaking of Blu-ray, Sony is planning to include a single movie on the high-definition format with each PS3 for a limited time, much like it bundled a UMD movie with the PSP in 2005. However, while the UMD film was Spider-Man 2, whose comic-book roots and special effects had undeniable gamer appeal, Sony's choice for the PS3's BD movie--the Will Ferrell NASCAR comedy Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby--will puzzle many.

    Wow your 306 came with a remote free of charge? hey did it come with a Blu Ray player? didnt think so. dont you have to pay $100 to watch movies in HD? oh and how does that $100 hard drive work that you have to buy to play backwards compatible games? and another thing, is online fun, cause it is for me and my PS#, cause it FREE.

    well, the price for extra controllers is outrageous in my opinion, but I'm very pleased to hear that the memory card adapter will be at an affordable $15 since I have lots of PS1 and PS2 saves that will need to be transferred.

    In my opinion Sony will succeed i'm from portugal and when ps2 came out everyone claims with was too expensive but guess what... my god it sells like popcorns in cinemas with ps3 it will be the same thing the ppl whos talking trash about ps3 probably whill get one maybe not in launch day but when it drops the price. In the past Sony has proven that it can sell consoles now we just have to wait too see.

    Listen, I think you were missing the entire idea of what I was saying. You mentioning that the blu-ray player inside of the system itself is "cheaper than it should be" makes NO difference. Who's saying it's worth anything at all? You? Me? No. Sony, that's who! Just because they WANT a certain amount of money for a product, doesn't not mean it is WORTH what they want. Understand? It's not worth anthing unless someone buys it. Too many people are thinking like you and that's a BAD thing.

    And by people buying the system at the initial asking price is telling Sony (and any other manufacturer) that you're narrow-minded enough to pay what they ask. Like you're a zombie or something. Is that what you want all of us gamers to be....zombies? We deserve better than that and what they are asking of us is down right insulting. As if we're dumb enough to fall for that one! I have more hope for all of you than they do.

    Im assuming the PS3 isnt appealing to you because your simply not a Playstation brand fan. Because...your reasons for why your not interested in the PS3, just dont make any sense. Its not appealing because of the "prices"? Besides the actual console itself, all the other prices for games,accessories, etc are on par with whats on the market today. And if you were a real Playstation fan, than the number of units being shipped (while maybe dissapointing as in it will be a little harder to come by on day 1) has no corrolation to a decision to actually be interested in the product or wanting to buy it. If you dont like Sony, thats fine, but just say so because of a vaild opinionated point; i.e. the console, the games, the brand in general. Not because of the "launch quantity" or the perfectly justified "prices" for the console and its games.

    And for the record since you were speaking about "die hard Sony fans", I as well as my many of my friends, are die hard Sony fans, and uh yeah, were getting a PS3. Maybe not at launch, but were getting one. And were getting one because we are a fan of Sonys consoles, the features they bring, and the games. We enjoy the Sony brand to be exact.

    lol and btw in regards to features, I love everyones pointless whining about the PS3 when saying stuff like "yeah it has bluray, 1080p, and 7.1 DTS support...but how many people even have setups to support that" Well guess what, I have a HDTV, and a 7.1 compatible receiver, not to mention I am an avid cinephile so the features the PS3 brings to the table are very attractive for my gaming and movie needs. So heres my question...Why should I care or even think about the people who dont have an HDTV or suround sound? (both mind you are YEARS old technology) I do, and thats all that I SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT.

    And In conclusion, while people may just preclude that this is an egotistical fanboy rant, I also have a 360 and for the most part (at least with the games) I am quite happy with. But guess what, I have a job...Im allowed to own a 360 as well as a PS3. Not complaining about the price because I cant convince my parents to buy one for me. Sonys products cater to an older more mature crowd, its a statistical fact. If you think Sony is going to change its business strategy because thousands of 14 yos are whining about how much the PS3 sucks because they cant get one for Christmas, guess again.

    There is ONE thing which is the most annoying thing about the ps3.. Its not that bluray may or may not succeed as a media format.
    Its not that the price is massive (id pay it for metal gear 4!.. but thats me, not the gaming community average.. me (and people like me) probably count to about 2000 people HHAHAHA))

    Its not about the fact that sony took the rumble out of the pad
    Its not that sony stole nintendos idea, and replaced it will a less functional one..
    its not that the ps3 is massive in design...
    its not that the launch titles arent very awesome..

    the ONE thing which irritates me the most, is that the battery in the pad is non-removable, non replacable.. non...non!

    This only signifies to me that sony dont count on the controller (gyros) actually lasting longer than the entire battery life!
    Its like the entire pad is built to last however long the battery lasts..

    If nintendo can have batteries, and microsoft can have batteries... why sony, why not use the same battery that was used in your mp3 walkmans?
    Or are you doing away with those soon aswell?

    Its just irritating to me, I dont like the idea of "disposable" anything. Unless its sanitary...I like the idea that, i buy a console, and it lasts me however long I want it to, as a collectors item or whatever. Not because sony said "no, we dont make those pads anymore.. no more for you "

    Is the ps3 able to have dual shock pads plug into it somehow? Ive never realy asked that question... If it could, its something at least..

    But an almost CONSTANT use of battery (you cant power a usb battery pad without the use of the battery, once the battery is dead, you cant use it off the mains either)... you would think it was important to have some sort of special sony battery inside..

    But you know what happened to sony laptop batteries.. maybe this is why thay said "no"

    I'm sorry to all the Sony faithful out there, but Sony's shooting itself in the foot. I don't prefer one system over another, (as all three have unique attributes that I want to check out), but Sony's not making the PS3 all that appealing to me with all of the prices and changing of the number of launch units. Heck, I have friends who are diehard Sony fans, and they're starting to give the PS3 second thoughts. Maybe now would be a good time to say a quick prayer.

    hmmm... ps3... waste of money, perhaps? yessum it is. everything that sony is "creating" for its new console is already on 360. maybe not a blu-ray player, but the whole internet capabilities and online gaming. XBOX LIVE is awesome and has really good features like friend lists and all that. sony is trying to do the same thing. they're already 4 yrs late ( Live came out in 2002) to come up with a GOOD or at least DECENT online service. yeah, it may be free, so what? you can only offer so many features with a free service. i dont mine paying 40-50 dollars a year for my live account, at least its proven to work. and its actually ORIGINAL, INNOVATIVE AND FUN. Sony keeps on trying to steal everyone else's thunder. hey, i own a ps2 and 2 psp's. i was very disappointed with the psp. CRAPTACULAR indeed. so...why should ps3 be any different?

    OF COURSE Sony has to charge exorbitant (look it up or use context clues) prices for accessories... that's how Sony will (try) to make up the losses it is selling the PS3 for.

    Let's see:

    HDMI cable= $50 (could have easily been included in the Premium bundle)
    Controller = $50 (for a controller that is essentially a Dualshock2 at TWICE the price (24.99), less rumble feature)

    I'm surprised that Sony did not try to have you buy a $60 Blu-Ray remote so that you can watch BD movies on the PS3!! Of course, it already has so much going against the PS3...

    Why are all the Xbox "fan boys" so insistent on reading about all of the Playstation 3 news? Are they scared that the PS3 is going to be better than the 360? It's really anoying that everytime i read comments on a PS3 news board, there are tons of negative comments from 360 fans. I could care less about the 360. I don't read about 360 news and could care less to hear about it on the PS3 boards. If I wanted to know about the 360, I would go read about it, and if you think that the 360 is so much better than the PS3, then stop reading about it and commenting about!!! Unless of course your afraid that the PS3 is going to own the 360 and thats the only reason you read about it.

    The people that scream "1080P FTW!!!" are so few but they are so loud you would think everyone has a 1080p TV. It's because of how loud they are MSFT decided to add 1080p support to the 360. Look, I'm a videophile and I'll admit 1080p is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. But the market is just not there yet. My HDTV does 720p and probably won't buy another TV until 2008. 720p does a great job and where videogames are concerned developers can get better performance at this rez regardless of platform.

    Wow, top shelf HD capabilities and WILL FARREL??? Sony has lost their minds, if it's the best console how about at least a good movie with a decent actor? How about Ran or Seven Samurai by Kurosawa if you want to go BEST. Oh thats right, its NOT about best is it? it's about sales to morons and key demographics. Have fun with Ricky Bobby, EFF Blu Ray if the best they can do is Blue Crush and XXX. If they don't start releasing GOOD movies on it itll die.

    nitrog, i can see your meaning. BUT there is another counter...

    The 360 is in a safe market. Meaning, its not just ONE thing, its TWO.
    The wii is also safe, in respect that its SEVERAL things (gamecube, wii, virtual console..)

    The ps3, is just an either/or system. Buy it, or dont buy it. Buy the expensive one, or buy the MORE expensive one.

    The market for that isn't big compared to the markets the 360 and the wii has on its field.

    You see, for a PlayStation gamer, used to the ps2 and ps1 demographic.. their options are lost. Because their budgets are probably more suited to what sony had to offer for the price.
    Sony never offered the BEST graphics etc, it had features, and price all in one.
    Xbox went the way of the specs, and it didnt work out as well as they hoped (but it worked better than we thought, because its awesome how one company does its first time around, especially against nintendo AND sony. Not even the great Sega could do that!).

    The ps3 is for people who are "serious" about their entertainment. Kaz said this himself "its not for everyone".

    The ps3 price, the market strategy of it is of the way of the small time. It will sell alot of units, it will make money off of people with buying stuff online.. etc. But whether their strategy wins with bluray succeeding over hddvd, or their games being released sooner and more frequent than xbox 360 and wii titles?

    That remains to be seen.

    The bigger and more powerful (and more expensive) means less users, less games. Less market dominance. But sony aren't directly competing. Neither have they put themselves in a market which they are safe.

    Because on one hand, its got competition from bluray players (they will drop in price dramatically when hddvd puts a fight up). Hddvd is hoping to garner more attention, cheaper titles, more films, cheaper production costs.. etc etc.

    Then on the games side you have the 360 dropping in price, the wii, TWO consoles being more than HALF the price of the ps3 as a GAMES console.

    You can see where im getting at right? It doesnt matter if the ps3 has more harddrive space.. what if hddvd gets far more movie titles? what if lord of the rings, star wars.. and then the rest.. all get hddvd exclusive releases? The ps3 isn't equipped with that future in mind. Whereas the 360 IS, because if the movie formats fail (its got dvd to challenge up to you know). The 360 can either way, provide an external adaptor for those movie types.

    If hddvd dominates, you will be stuck with whatever sony signs. Just like how UMD is going right now (after only a year).

    Its not the fact that sony are VALUE FOR MONEY for what it is, its just that it has so much against it for that price.
    If you want the ps3 as a GAMES machine, you could get a wii AND a 360 for the same price!
    If you want a psp as a games machine, you could get TWO nintendo ds'!

    If you want a super media playing console, the ps3 is a good deal. But then it comes to the battle of the media formats doesnt it...

    You see? So much competition wherever the ps3 sits. The 360, you have the OPTION for this stuff. And the price of media players drop considerably...

    Competition is hot isnt it?

    Sony doesnt manufacture their own LCD/PLASMA panels. Most likely its made by IBM or LG. Anyways...

    For everyone that wants to know. 1080p is less then 3% of H.D. Tv's out there. On top of that, most people have DVI still, not HDMI(which carries and audio signal along with copy protected matierial). So why would the ps3 need HDMI AND Opitical? Overkill. Not to mention that I have NEVER seen a movie theatre in 7.1(which is two rear channels STRAIGHT behind you). Also HD-DVD(which is why it will succeed, just on the name alone because people dont have blue-tv's so why would they want a blu-ray video player) plays 1080p. The cable can handle it just fine AND you can play it on DVI!!!(which blu-ray can not, in 1080p anyways). So how will sony POSSIBLY succeed with the blu-ray on the ps3, making consumers pay for a technology that is dead from the start. because the people that already own High Definition TV(DLP gives best picture quailty for those who dont know) either 1)dont have 1080p or 2)dont have HDMI or 3) dont have 600 bucks to spend on a technology that wont even play to its full capability.

    But those that bought the xbox 360 for themselves or children will be able to pick up a HIGH DEFINITION(all of them are true high def, so shutup) for 200 bones and start to watch right away. Not to mention they've had a year to save for a technology(any high def format) that is going to be near impossible to take off within the next few years.

    and for those that want to get into high def. there is no way they are going to pay 600 bucks, then go out and buy a 1080p tv(which is in fake demand right now ). So awesome...now if i want to watch High Definition movies its going to cost me over 3000. sold.... :roll eyes:

    Just a note to all you silly kids who think that the "best picture" is with the PS3 b/c it has 1080p... First of all, who owns a 1080p TV (if you do you're in the clear minority)... Second, unless you have a TV that is MORE than 50" big there is NO DISCERNIBLE DIFFERENCE between 720p and 1080p... If you get a 1080p TV ("Full HD" as it is mislabeled) that is less than 50" you are GETTING RIPPED OFF... Incidentally, I own a Sony Bravia 40" 720p LCD and X360 looks amazing... A PS3 will not look better on a 1080p 40" TV. So, as you can tell I am not a Sony hater, etc., since they already have my money for the TV (Sony LCD's are among the best, no complaints).... I just know when a company is attempting to rip you off with MARKETING LABELS... -G.

I am not however going to believe that will be the prevailing trend but it is also not all the system has to offer. They have put as much innovation into the ps3 and nintendo put into the Wii it's just ps3 innovations are in features ect. The ps3 presents the most detailed picture at 1080p nobody can compete. Not only that it does play the high definition movies (not HD-DVD) but it plays them in HIGH DEFINITION. something that boggles my mind on the xbox360 add on. It's a hd-dvd drive that does not play movies in HD???? eh whatever. but also it has a hard drive that is 3 times the size of the xbox360. includes a WiFi adapter built in. The controlers recharge off the usb cable that you plug into the top of them xbox360 doesn't even come with wireless controlers. The network platform is free. The ps3 comes with standardized outputs I.E. HDMI, Digital optical, which btw is not the same audio that xbox360 supports it is 7.1 UNCOMPRESSED audio. The absolute state of the art sound for gameing today. The ps3 also has the ability to live stream audio and video to your psp ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD! There is even talks of doing a digital download rental and purchase of game software (although i think thats a rather lofty ambition for ps3 games it would probably work fine for ps2 and ps1 games. after all 30gigs of info would take a while to download. The reason I keep comparing it to the 360 is because people don't complain about the priceing for that and it's only $100 diffrence. Not only that to get the xbox 360 as close as you can to providing the functionality of the ps3 you would have to spend 100 bucks for the hd dvd drive like 50 something i think for the wifi adapter 40 bucks for a wireless controler and it still wouldn't have the resolution or the hard disk space of the ps3. there are talks of a 100gig hard disk for the xbox360 soon, but you know what thats going to cost? about $1 per gig is what quality hard disks are going for now and I don't think microsoft would both unless they were planning on increaseing the price on that a bit at least so i would guess in the $150 area. so if you work out the math it's acctually about 200 bucks cheaper then a comperable xbox 360 (estimated value before tax with addons nessacary to get it as close to the ps3 as possible 1/4th of price removed from hard disk add on. All estimates in this post are based on the premium edition of the ps3)

Im sure you like a lot of that money back. but its not the gamers that make stupid decissions its humans. Poeple just need to learn first hand.     $ony won't rest till it gets all ( & I mean ALL of Your hard earned ) CASH .

    Not including the cable is very cheap , low-blow to loyal fans. This is the 1st time I got my pre-order cancelled & money back after I heard about that not-including cable thingy . I put up with $ony even with 400$+ PS , 500$ PS2 & I imported a japanese PSP on launch-day ( japan ) for a staggering 670 US$.Cause I beleived in their product . It's not the price , it's the principles - I had 100's of problems with my PS2 - SONY never/ever acknowledged that they had a problem with the 1st batch of PS2 , I bought a 2nd PS2 when they refused even when I had 4yr warranty & none of the games loaded caz of a drive-problem - YES , I'm that patient . But , talk about support from MIcrosoft - they changed my xbox360 ( free of charge & NO QUESTIONS ASKED ) . I don't see $ony doing that . If You are wise , ( gamers aren't - I totally understand that , but You are not stupid either ) , You'll hold-off this time to see how this PS3 launch goes , then target for that March release batch - I bet you my entire PS2 collection ( 257 games with a SCPH-5000 PS2 ) that it'll have a better hardware .

    AND most important to me : 1st batch of games on PS3 are crap .

    Wow, and people complained about the wii peripherals being expensive! for ten more $ you get TWO controllers with the wii, both with rumble, both with motion sensoring, one with a speaker, and also internal memory..

    Wow, imagine how much a ps3 with 4 pads will cost... WOAAHHH!

    Im glad im a lone wolf when it comes to consoles! And you would think, for the price, the ps3 could have some memorycard slots in it for ps2 cards, and ps1 cards... i mean, come on! why?
    The only reason? its to remove the memory cards from the market

    And shouldnt a massive media playing console come with a remote? it's like the ps2 all over again!
    Downloading ps1 games and ps2 games? ps2 games take up about 4-8gb in space.. wow! ps1 games for $14.99?! And how many of these games will be on that list which ARENT sony made?

    Until i see some proof of how well these "promises" work for the price, im waiting a year

    And one thing to remember, that $50 pad doesnt have a removable battery. And i bet if you removed it yourself, it would void warranty. and i BET the moving gyro technology would start to work a bit less responsive, JUST about when the battery starts to run out aswell... sneaky.. very sneaky

    How much out of ten do you think sony are gutted that spiderman 3 isnt out, or especially on dvd or bluray yet?

    I will buy this baby don't matter how it coast. And will install a linux in a month after release.... YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

    PS3 will be my videogame, bdplayer and a "downloader machine"(24h 7 days) using linux +firefox YEEEEEEEEEEEEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ;-D

    Playstation has said in the past that they don't plan on lowering the price of the PS3 or PSP in the future. Instead they will do system upgrades to make sure the systems are always offering top of the line hardware. I don't know if they'll stick with this, but they have with the PSP so far. Instead of lowering the price they're adding an eye toy.

    I think they'll eventually crack though, when they have ps3's sitting on the shelves cause no one will pay that much. I certainly won't buy one at that price.

    Im more exicted that u could download old ps1 and ps2 games online, now i can find those games i could never get years ago.

    this are really good news I'm getting a free movie with my PS3 only if it came with the HDMI cable included but OH well what else can u ask for! and for those people that dont have the money to buy a PS3 don't even bother talk about it please.

    Nice call. Notice stores always have a CG movie to show off their Plasmas and LCD's. Thats cause they are made in digital and look so nice a crisp compared to normal movies. Can you imagine FF7 in HD. The graphics and action in that are awesome. The first movie to really WOW me visually since the original Matrix came out. What game fan wouldn't want that, they should have done it.

    I'd much rather have a movie like Talladega Nights that I can watch over and over again. I saw Spiderman 2 once, while good, I have no desire ever to see it again. I have no idea where my Spiderman 2 UMD even is.
