PS3 preorders sold out at GameStop, EB

Limited quantities of PlayStation 3 preorders vanish quickly from GameStop, EB Games; information on online, Canadian preorder campaigns coming soon.

Yesterday, GameStop and EB Games outlined the retailers' preorder program for the much anticipated PlayStation 3. With problems stemming from last year's preorder campaign for the Xbox 360 and that system's subsequent short supply, the two retailers buckled down this year, limiting most stores to only eight PS3 preorders and requiring a $100 deposit from customers. The program began this morning when the company's more than 3,500 stores opened their doors for business.

As expected, the PS3 preorders went like next-gen hotcakes. GameStop and EB Games have updated their Web sites with grim news for anyone hoping to reserve one of Sony's next-gen consoles from any of the company's thousands of stores in the US.

Messages on both sites read: "Due to high demand and limited quantities, our US in-store preorder for the PlayStation 3 has ended."

However, American gamers set on getting a preordered PS3 may be able to head north to get that valuable voucher.

The message continues: "Information regarding the launch date of our Canadian in-store preorder will be posted when available. Online console preorder information coming soon!"

    i have my wii on preorder for the last few weeks with zelda and red steel, i dont think ill get a ps3 as im mostly in to my pc games and game pads reck my head, ill use my 600 to help get vista and a dx10 card when they come out!

    hey everybody..ive been reading this forum all day ..its was really entertaining..got me through a long day of work. i work at a store that sells videogames..and i will have a ps3..just because of that fact.. and i understand that some people think its not fair but..i just really like playing video games..im not gonna sell my ps3 on ebay and ive been called all kinds of names by co-workers who want to sell it and make tons of cash and do all this stuff with the money..but ive been playing video games since i was 4 years old..i just love them. i enjoy getting a new system..reading the manual and (even though they all pretty much tell you the same things) hooking it up and getting some serious gaming on.


    i do not have a 360..why? because Microsoft sucks?..no, i was a proud owner of an xbox and i bought sooooo many games for it but..360 dosent have any games that i really really want yet..i wanted it for a few games but then those games came out on pc so i was like hell i just built a damn good pc..ill just get them for pc..but when the time comes ill get one..

    why get a ps3? it seems like people are saying that i should wait till the price drops or until i see if the first batch fails due to hardware problems..i say nah.. im gonna but it buy a warranty for it and register it with sony so if any thing happens ill just get a new one..and yeah the price is kind of steep..but i remember when my parents bought me sega cd..i though that was steep too.. and im like heck ive been saving up for ps3 for awhile now..so it wont hurt me too much.

    sombody made a comment saying that it should be illegal to sell consoles on ebay for a month or 2 after release..i think thats a good idea..i respect the entrepreneurship of those who feel that they can make a good dollar off eager gamers but...i feel like its just making things too much of a hassle..it shouldnt be this hard to get a system..i remember when i saved up for monthes to get a n64..i got there and the lady thought it would be funny to tell me there were no more..i nearly bust into tears..lol so i feel for all of you that missed the preorder for ps3 ..and even though more should be on the way..it sucks to wait..i know..but maybe you guys should get together and do something about console scalping...unify and send something to ebay..cause i think most of the people buying up the ps3 and every system of merit from this day forth..will want to just sell it to double their cash...just a though..

    oh and one last thing..LONG LIVE THE FAN BOYS... you guys make video game conversation fun..lol if not for them everything would just be facts and numbers..theres nothing wrong with brand loyalty ..even if the company dosent know you exist or they dont care..what ever people tell you...keep doing your thing im a fanboy too..a video game fanboy and ill defend videogames to the death.lol that was kinda corny..but its true..lol just wanted to thank all you guys so far it was a good read

    ok here is the thing for all you sony haters you should realise that the price for the ps3 is a great deal here is why, take microsoft for example you get a system for 400 but if you want wireless you need n extra 100 for something that in my belief microsoft should have included another reason is take sonys online service its free and no it will not suck but if you want online gaming for xbox 50 extra and for nintendo who really wants to wave a remoat around for games sure it fun for 5 minutes or so but it will really get tiresome please all you haters do some rescearch

    it looks now like the number of ps3s available in the us and canada will be 350,000 not 400,000. i dont understand why folks would go into a store whose employees buy up all of the available systems you want and then gloat about it. go somewhere else. go somewhere that likes gamers.

    the ps3 overheating is fact not fiction..since it actually happended( conditions were a little brutal though)... so therefore it's not made up..duh!!... one wonders how it'll react in the household though..... 360 scratching dvd's happened also..but it didn't happen to everyone... i haven't seen a console launch without problems..so more than likely the ps3 will suffer the same fate as all the past launches... problematic!... but bearable!!

    Would you change the gameplay machanics in any of the games I mentioned? I think you totally missed the point. Dude you were harping on graphics. Further I would rather have them push tons of systems so Wii can have a fighting chance to get 3rd party games and it looks as if Zelda will make that happen. As far as the "risk"..I mean risk in the detriment of the franchise name. Nintendo isnt forcing you to do anything. You either want to be wowed by PS3 graphics or play proven franchises. Either way you are going to have to wait for one.

    If I were working at Gamestop the day the PS3 came out, I would be wearing a bullet-proof vest, a helmet, and an ankle holster with a gun because there are going to be plenty of fights. My guess is, everyone who buys a PS3 on launch day will need to be escorted out of the store by the police. Whoever buys a PS3 on launch day is going to be wearing a bullseye target on their chest and back.

    I hope you are still on the forum. I will gladly answer your question. If I can recollect RE4 came out at the tail end of the GCs life span. And if i can remember it garnered the deserved recognition for it's innovative game play. Would you reckon that game has better graphics than any game Xbox was pushing? How about X360? Better yet why are people holding out for God of War 2.. for the weakest of the last Gen System graphics wise? Chances are the cliche will stick...if it isnt broken dont fix meaning gameplay wont change much because it worked so well B4. Would you reason people to be running out to get that game because of the graphics? Why do Final Fantasies sell out? What about Maddens? It cant be the graphics. PS2 Madden always out sold the rest of em. How did Grand Theft Auto get 4 games? The graphic were pathetic! Why do Nintendo franchises wipe the floor with everything? Certainly not graphics. You don't have to have killer graphics to push units. That's just a fact you are going to have to accept. Like I said B4 a person who follows Zelda is going to get the next Nintendo system Wiimote or not and a serious Final Fantasy fan is going to get the $600 PS3. The reason Nintendo waited is because they wanted to push more Wii units and more units of the game. They know their fanboys are going to buy it and anyone sitting on the fence is going to buy it especially if they follow Zelda. The line is drawn. You just have to make a decision my friend. You flatter Nintendo because of the simple fact that you are even considering getting Zelda over a PS3 because like you said it's too much money to support both. That says a lot about their franchises. If you want to wait for Zelda wait, if not go and buy it day one like those poor saps buying a PS3 for $2000 on Ebay.     Again, although your rebuttel did speak, the samples used still are not the same as the current situation.

    GOW2 ISN'T going to be released on the PS3 nor will it be pushed back for a PS3 release, this is the current case with Zelda, IF nintendo really did try and make me a "believer" they would also have to put more faith in their system... by releasing zelda on the Wii alone for the first 2 weeks it says that they are still on the rocks about getting their current userbase to switch over, and FORCING (well pretty much, if you don't want to be playing yesterdays news) them to buy a Wii because the last greatest game left for the Cube all year IS zelda (sorry BTO... you are good but not what the majority of the owners are waiting for). I don't think that I should be forced into being an early adopter just to play a game that has no merit to why its being pushed back (yes, I understand the whole push Wii sales but thats not being consumer friendly now is it?).

    Also, wouldn't it make MORE sense to release zelda simultaneously? not everyone who owns a GC will be buying a Wii and will most likely wait it out, but if nintendo really did want to make a killing they'd be making more money with zelda being on both systems at launch as opposed to just one... seems like its more focused on moving Wii units as opposed to Zelda:TP units because releasing a game on multiple systems will garner more money then putting it on just one or time releasing it.

    As for not risking it, they aren't risking anything, they stated that every Wii unit made isn't putting the company in a deficet like the PS3/360 do, so therefore even if 1 million Wii's where made and only half of that where sold, they will still project a positive "forcast" on the companies Profits/assessments statement(s).

    And as aforementioned, using Zelda as a guide is something I don't want for the Wii, I don't want to be playing the system a year from now and everygame in X genre is using the same control scheme featured in X games released in the past year, if every FPS plays like RS/COD3 its going to be a rather bland experience because the "innovation" is gone after 2-3 times playing the same game with the same setup... like my brothers DS, how many times can a game use the 2nd screen to display a map? sure it was convinent the first time, but consecutive use of that setup makes it seem like the innovative features that the system should be showing are wasted.

    I'm going to have to "wait" it out regardless, but I still am quite sad that nintendo has set a dome of resistance on me to try and push me to buy a Wii... buying a console should never be forced (even if for temporary reasons)... but a rather distinctive choice you decide to partake in after reviewing what the system offers and what games appeal to you (Yes Zelda does appeal to me but as aforementioned, buying a wii and a game isn't as convinent for me as buying just the game thats basically THE game that everyone will own for that system).

    Rhygeta you really don't know that much about the games for the Wii because they all don't use the FPS scheme. In fact COD3 is one of the only games that even really uses that scheme because in Red Steel you also use the controler like a sword. In games like DBZ and Madden 07 it's the motions of the controller that controls the on-screen action. Really you dont need to justify why you are buying a PS3 cause you already made up you mind about it. Just don't try tearing down the Wii to prop up the PS3.

    I was using the FPS scheme as an example, notice I didn't say anything about action games or the like... even still, if every platformer game has the same layout as Rayman or every action RPG uses the same scheme featured in the upcoming DQ or FFCC game... i'm not going to be "wowed" a year later playing the next good RPG using the same control scheme as DQ or FFCC or just uses an amalgamation of the schemes at once... the graphics isn't what is selling the system... the controller and how the games use it, is, and since the PS3 and 360 can continualy improve on that section(graphics), nintendo has to do the same for its controller or else its (as aforementioned IMO) will lose its appeal and become just that....a gimmick.

    I'm wondering how many are willing to pre-order if there was more available? The sell out is expected as its only 400,000 consoles, not sure how many gamers will own a PS3 before the end of the year but it looked good for the developers who plan to bring their games to PS3 this holiday. As its a small number for consoles out there its a huge number for blu-ray players out there. I think I read that there are around 32,000 next-gen DVD players are out there, I think this came up when we first heard of the blu-ray diode shortage and how it will effect other companies who will sell blu-ray players this year.
    So we may see 1 million plus blu-ray players out this year, that 1 million plus potential blu-ray movie watchers. Even if you don't plan to watch blu-ray movies you may do later on when blu-ray movies become more mainstream.

    There is also the HD-DVD add-on for 360 that will help HD-DVD but you 360 fans remember you don't need next-gen DVD players, so you won't be wanting the HD-DVD add-on will you?

    You don't have to get a Wii to show you are a GC owner. Obviously they are two different systems and you shouldn't have to buy another system just to play a game that was suppose to be on the GC. That is a good point you bring up.

    I may not agree with it myself but you are entitled to your opinion.

    The reasoning in my head is....I have a GC, but it has been collecting dust as I was playing my PS2 for Dragon Quest VIII and Kingdom Hearts and ESPN NFL 2K5 (now that was a good football game). Now I can wait for a while to get Zelda for the GC, but when there is a system called a Wii, that is supposedly going to revolutionize the very basis of how we play video games, with better graphics, and a damn fun way to play the same game I could be playing with a boring controller, how can you go wrong with that? If you are planning to spend your money on something else like bills or college tuition or just another console or upgrading your PC then yeah I can understand. But if not then, why be afraid? Especially when the Wii is suppose to be the cheapest of the systems? And maybe Nintendo doesn't seem to care much about its userbase through logic. But...compared with MS and the fires the 360 has caused, plus not being able to supply too many people with the units they preordered.....and then Sony with the equal amount of units as the 360, the high costs and the "we don't care how much it costs, we know you are gonna buy it anyways" kind of attitude ( I know they are saying those exact words but you can kinda feel it).......you can kinda say Nintendo is the best company when it deals with how much they care about their userbase. Besides, GC was dead for a while....besides Zelda, what else was you hoping for with that unit?

    Thats the thing, i'm purchasing a PS3 come november, add in about 2-3 games and i'm spent for the month (basically my whole months revenue would be just going toward it), also, the Wii just doesn't interest me at this point, I'll pick one up for christmas for myself or my brother will for me (whichever way it works) but I think that in the long term, the Wii just is going to lose its edge... I mean how much time can you play the same FPS using the same controller scheme featured in Red Steel or COD3?     the way i see it, it's supposed to provide something "new" but if every developer keeps tossing out the same bland controller scheme(s) used in the past year... whats "new"? what's going to make me feel like this FPS is different from the last FPS? the Wii (to my knowledge) doesn't offer HD gaming nor are the graphics anywhere near what my craptastic ati radeon x800xl can produce (can run oblivion on medium/high settings), the sound (again to my knowledge) also isn't HD.... so i'm paying near 300 (cdn) dollars for a system thats controller (again IMO) is what will drive the product but if the games all feature the same scheme... it kind of kills what the experience offered is supposed to make "valuable" for the price... I could upgrade my GPU or change my MOBO for around the same price and get a better "value" with that.

    And as for Zelda, although your reasoning is there, it still fails to acknowledge or provide a reason as to why the Wii version is being sold before the GC version... sure the "experience" will be different, but why is it that I have to wait to play it on my GC? I CAN budget a zelda+PS3 and 2 games, but I cannot budget a Wii+PS3+2games and Zelda for Wii... just makes it more inconvinient for me and a hassle seeing as by the time I get to play it, the game will already be old news and everyone would've pretty talked about and finished it, and by that time, christmas would mean Wii+zelda which means i'd be waiting even longer just to get a system for one title (for now anyway, as aforementioned with me buying GC just for PSO)

    Typical childish Forum users judging a product that has not even been released yet....Try to base your fan boy allegiance with facts NOT fiction.

    e.g Remember the xbox360 consoles that scratch the disks rendering them useless when you move it from vertical to horizontal(or visa versa). I have no problem with the PS2/1/Sega Dreamcast scratching disks.

    That's based on solid fact so please wait until Nov 17th (or march 2007 for PAL regions) until you air your fictional fantasies of biased HATE towards a the PS3.

    Well I never said that what the employees do is right....but its what happens sometimes in real life. Everybody has a point of view on this. On the one hand, we the customers feel cheated with the fact that so few PS3's are going to be able to be pre ordered and yet employees are making it worse by cutting out more PS3s from the preorder list. On the other hand, these employees work at the store day in and day out at a video game store, trying to fill our gaming needs evveerrrry sinnngggllle daaaaay. It's one thing to say if he/she aren't interested in video games; it would be totally different situation if they are qualified to work on a bakery or a video rental store or something but they just happened to work in a EB or Gamestop and just decided for the heck of it lets just preorder a PS3...but they prolly love video games just as much as we do and would do anything to get one just like us.

    But it is a good point in that it is bad business if you have a shortage of units and make the list even shorter by buying or preordering your the one product everybody wants...except we live in a world where we don't get to live in a situation we would always desire. If all video game consoles can come in numbers like the Wii, where a million units would be available on launch day and 4 MILLION by the end of December, then definitely the employees won't feel the need to preorder them and would let all the consumers get first dibs. Sadly, many times companies can't keep up with all the consumers' demands, including employees who in essence are also just as much as a video gamer as we all are and who can't resist a chance to get something many can't get. So even though I hate the fact that employees would preorder a unit which is already a rarity because I am a consumer who wants to be able to get stuff when I want it, I can't blame them either because they are pretty much human like all of us.

    Oh and also I was never planning to preorder a PS3 either.....that sh@t costs tooo much for something that doesn't have a good game library...yet. I'm gonna go and get the Wii with Zelda and Red Steel....and maybe Madden....and maybe FF12....and FF3 for the DS...and maybe Wind Waker for the DS too....damn this is going to cost as much as a PS3...but this plan has games instead....good games....oh well thats my plan.....have a great time gaming!

    MS does not own the licence to BluRay or HD-DVD... So your comment has no merit... Sony is known for their propritary formats, restrictive licences and copy protection... Before you respond to my comment you should do some research and educate yourself... After the research come back and respond, then I'll listen.

    So what your saying is, its IMPOSSIBLE for MS to make a deal with the developer of this HD-DVD/BRD player and use that instead of just going HD-DVD right? why is it that MS opted to go HD-DVD anyway? is it because it is the "better" format, or that it's being used by its competitor?

    Having proprietary rights doesn't mean that another company cannot go into a deal with another company to use X format of their choosing, in this case, MS teaming up with NEC to provide that player to the 360.

    Chances are if you are a "dedicated" GameCube owner you will own a Wii. I don't have sympathy for someone who bought a Cube just to play Zelda. I'm glad Nintendo is makin em wait.

    So basically what your saying is, I HAVE to own a Wii to be a "dedicated" GC owner? I only bought the Wii for PSO and happend to buy another 10 or 12 games on top of it seeing as most other good games were already available on my PS2, also, to justify someone slapping a userbase in its face and saying "UPGRADE NOW *****ES!" is just wrong... I noticed I haven't seen anyone give me a logically sound reason as to why GC users have to wait seeing as nintendo CARES about its userbase SOOOOO much,

    You guys do understand that if you work at EB you don't get special treatment, right? At each EB, two of the employees got the chance to reserve a PS3. It doesn't matter if that EB has a dozen employees, only two will be able to reserve a PS3. And it doesn't matter if you were on the clock or not. They would have to quit their job in order to pre-order a PS3, and even then the manager would probably not let them out of spite. As far as letting EB staff get the first pick.... Would you ever shop at EB if you knew that you wouldn't be able to get the newest hot item because the employees (and their friends) snagged 'em all before they could even hit the shelf? No, you wouldn't. It's called bad buisness. The policies that EB has implemented are there to prevent just that. It's called good buisness.

    it's sad to think that the so called "high demand" is more so over who can make the most of it by selling it online.

    do real gamers even exist anymore? ...

    oh well, i wouldn't want the glitchy, launch batch anyways

    dominae - I definitely understand.

    tajwar101 - I agree, I think they should have first pick of a launch console over anyone. They devote themselves to video games every day in and day out, they deserve it. Actually I don't think I would want to work at a GS because being around games all the time takes some of the fun out. Too much of a good thing is never a good thing. I think i'd be sick of people asking me when the ps3 is coming out every 5 minutes. Not to mention my 360 biased opinions aren't well liked by everyone. I wonder if they still get e3 tickets... that would be a nice bonus, oh and the GoW lanyard. lol

    I had no intentions of preordering a ps3 on launch you know as well as I do about sony's launch history. And I will give the credit to the gamestop employees but i still think that they should wait in line like everyone else. I handle stuff like that everyday But I understand that the customer comes first and that what is left I can have my pick. It is called good buisness and it is rarely practiced anymore

    I'm employed at a GameStop in TN. I found out when you did, the night before. If I wanted, I could've skipped classes and ran up to the store in the morning, waited for my coworker to arrive and open the register and the store, and gone inside to pre-order my system.

    OH WAIT, that sounds like everyone else.
    And by the way, none of our employees pre-ordered the system. I would say that we care about our loyals that much, but really we couldn't care less about the PS3. The launch will be more of a nightmare than a blessing of entertainment.

    Well you do know that they cant do anything about the "8 per store" system...especially with the short amount of PS3s available. Sony couldn't give enough and Gamestop are doing the best they can since out of the 400,000, you gotta account that some are in Canada, then Best Buy, Circuit City, Toys R Us, Target and all the other stores want some. After all of that Gamestop and EB games got the rest........for the rest of the nation.....not that many, is it?

    And the employees working there work there so they can get systems...thats pretty much the only incentive for working in the store...can you really say they don't deserve it? And if you are saying its their fault for not telling you on time, then you gotta ask how is it that the others 6 got their's before you? Either they got the message at the same time but ran faster than you, or they constantly been going to there local Gamestop to check up on preorders. All I can say is live with it....and hope you find a weakling carrying a PS3 so you can get your revenge.

    im not saying anything bad about the employees I just think that it is messed up that they would allow it with only eight per store. I would tell my employees to suck it up or take the day off and wait in line to preorder. They knew it was going to be reserved on that day. You got all the advantage right there with just a heads up. Hell im trying to find out when they are taking reserves for the wii and everyone acts like they do not know but I then I am told it is monday, no, teusday, or maybe next month. I did not get the email for the ps3 reserves until 11pm the night before and how many people did not read it until the next day and were already too late. I just want a fair shake

    Ummm...so if they all have to wait in line.....who's selling the systems? Guys you have to realize the people who work there didn't just get into the business cuz it help pays the bills. They have an interest in video games just as much as you guys do. Prolly soo much more that they actually got a job in a video game store. It's logical to think that perhaps after having to serve and help sell video games to whiny, snot-nosed brats and have to deal with people that just "browse" around and not buy anything but yet want to be treated as customers, maybe they deserve to be on the front-lines in buying a new system? Don't you think they deserve the chance? If you really wanted a system, you would have gotten a job there. And if you dont want that kind of job, then quit whining about not getting a system and just blame Sony for not supplying your gaming needs.

    man that is terrible. I would be mad aswell. Why with so limited number does gamestop with hold 2 for their employees. I think it should have been everyman for himself. Let the employees stand in line for 4 hours and then they can have their reserve aswell, not just walk in 5 min to 10 and be like yeah i want one. just like that

    Thanks to the manager at one of my local Gamestops I was screwed out of my preorder. After waiting for a couple hours in line behind only two other people, the manager came out and told us there were only two preorders available. B*****it!! I spoke with the district manager today and he told me that that store had 8 systems allocated which meant there were six systems that were supposed to be available for the public. Thanks to people like this manager, people like me and the other three people behind me got screwed out of our pre-orders. People like this guy suck. I just hope he's reprimanded in some way and that the DM can somehow get me my preorder.

    Poor Canadians! Americans stealing their console! But it comes at a price as we'll have to pay more money for the Canadian one compared to the American one.

    Also, i wish i had a videogame store like EB or Gamestop near me. I live right next to DC, and you'd think there'd be a ton there.

    *SMELLS* ahhhhhh YES!, you can smell the haters in the air! it's ok, it's ok, Nov 17 will come and pass and you dont have to worry about dealing with people saying "i cant wait for ps3 to come out".....

    HOWEVER you will have to deal with people saying how great the ps3 is and that will never go away, sorry we cant all get what we want.
