Prey hunts down free maps, skins on XBL

Five multiplayer characters, four multiplayer maps for Human Head's topsy-turvy shooter now on Marketplace; Madden picture packs also available.

Back in mid-September, 3D Realms did the unthinkable during a time of game companies doing backflips over microtransactions--it said new content for the Xbox 360 game Prey would be free. Today, the company made good on its promise and let loose the first postrelease content for the game gratis on Xbox Live Marketplace.

Gamers who have overcome Prey's motion-sickness-inducing perspective switches can now download a quintet of multiplayer skins and a quartet of multiplayer maps--all of which are free. The content is available in all regions except Japan. A list of the new Prey content is below.

Marketplace was also flooded with content from another Xbox 360 game today. With the NFL season five weeks deep, sports fans now have a better idea of whether each Sunday means one step closer to the playoffs or just another embarrassing beating (ahem--Raiders). Either way, gamers can still support their teams with a new batch of Madden NFL-branded picture packs, according to the blog of Xbox Live's Major Nelson. The remaining NFL team picture packs (six were previously released) are reportedly available for 60 Marketplace points ($0.75) each.

Prey Xbox Live Marketplace content:

Multiplayer skins
Becky
Elhuit
Elite
Hunter
Jen

Multiplayer maps
Gravity Labs
Space Oddity
Topillogical
Tunnel Rat

Free is good, not released in Japan, how funny that makes a refreshing change, they normally get exclusive treatment, ha, ha !

I played Gravity Labs this morning and it's pretty cool. It's basically 2 seperate levels sitting directly on top of each other. The ceiling of one part is the floor of the other and vice versa. You switch by going into special areas which turns the room upside down and drops you into the other part of the level. In the middle area you can see both levels and shoot at people above you.

Stevetwo ... you said the multiplayer seems tacked on? I remember seeing the video for Prey back in 98 when it was running on the Halflife 1 engine and they clearly showed multiplayer in it. The multiplayer has obviously been in the works for a while.

How about they stop releasing this worthless crap and release a patch so we can actually try the multiplayer. And fix the damn matchmaking it bites balls.

I think this is a good idea to push future sales of Prey. Maybe maginal sellers will do this, give away additional free content as a way to push extended sales of the original product.

The MP did suck, but I heard it was patched and good now. They are probably hoping the new content will get people to try the new code and maybe experience a repaired MP experience.

Prey is kinda funny with the MP. It's a single player game, the MP is definately tacked on. But, the thought of MP with gravity switching and running on walls and stuff seems SO COOL that I don't think they could resist having it in there.

If there wasn't MP, the Prey boards would probably be half-full of people talking about how cool it would be to wall-walk in deathmatch. I'm glad they did the MP, even though I don't play it, because with patched and content updates it could turn into a really cool experience.

Finally some developers releasing downloadable content worth getting! (only because it's free).. I would never pay for downloadable add-ons.. which is why I hate the marketplace - because no DC is usually free now a days (unlike on OldBox)

Take note all you other game developers. Either make new maps free off the bat or make them free after like 3 months or something otherwise there is no point to buying them because they can never be implemented into ranked match play.

Hardly anyone will be coming back to play this game. Thanks for the effort, but you should have released the game sans the lag fest.

I think making free content available is a good way to get more sales of the main game. Like Sociologist says, that is the likely reason. But it isn't a bad reason. Given little things like this away makes the main game appear more attractive. And which is better--to get 1000 people to pay $5 for add-ons or to get 200 people to buy your $50 game?

  • rageousl

Cool that some are still releasing free quality updates. Thanks!!

Prey was and still is a very weak game, even during the slow summer release schedule. I have played through about half of it, but grew bored over time, and now it sits on my shelf collecting dust. The lagging sales of the title may have something to do with the free content, and it is foolish to attribute it to altruistic developers/publishers.
