Kutaragi on 360, Wii: "We don't care"

Despite admitting PS3 production problems, Sony Computer Entertainment president says he's not concerned about the next-gen competition.

Last week Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi delivered the keynote address at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show. As usual, he appeared confident, laying out his long-term vision for how the PlayStation 3 will take over many functions traditionally performed by the PC.

As for the PlayStation 3 launch, Kutaragi let Sony Computer Entertainment America president Kaz Hirai lay down the nuts and bolts in a video interview with GameSpot. However, the so-called "Father of the PlayStation," whose English is limited, did speak very briefly with British trade magazine MCV about the looming next-gen conflict.

When asked his opinion of the PS3's competitors, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii, Kutaragi was blunt. "We don't care," he flatly told the trade.

But while he was confident about the PS3's chances, the executive also admitted that the console's launch was not exactly going according to plan. "Right now...we can't manufacture enough blue laser diodes for our PlayStation 3s," he said, "But we will resolve that."

Blu-ray diode production problems pushed back the PS3's European launch to March 2007. The console is still set to go on sale in Japan November 11 and in North America November 17. However, its day-one inventory has been drastically cut from 2 million units to just 100,000 units in Japan and 400,000 units in the US and Canada.

    P.S. I will buy Ps3 because of the games not because it's name. Most of the x360 games i can play on my pc so why should i bother. I don't even think of x360 as a real console. I bought it cos' i had the money and when i buy Ps3 i will sell x360 immediately. Ps3 will have better games than Ps2, it's a fact and that's quite enough for most gamers

    Sony is trying to bring us something new and different and a true next gen console, i don't know why is everybody against that. Jealous jerks, you don't have to buy Ps3, just stop complaining and play your X360 and be happy. We will play our Ps3 and be also happy. I don't see the problem. If x360 is so great and Ps3's not then we will see. We don't have to wait much longer, the future is near.

    Ah yes.. that little "gimmiky" and "underpowered" and "inferior" device sells MILLIONS more than the psp.

    Oh, whats that now? UMDs getting pulled out of shelves, and out of stores entirely? Isn't competition sweet!
    Of course Sony care about the competition, but it's in their best interests to bluff and call the betters on.

    However, we ALL have seen what Nintendo and M$ have on their cards, and most of us are definately going to put our money on the sure fire winners (nice analogy huh?)

    Sony's way right now, is to go in the direction of "super console". It's not out there to proclaim GAMES as it's primary function. It's out to steal some heat from Microsoft with PC's (and apple) and it's out to take another chunk out of the gaming industry.

    But take a look at this -

    Starfxxxer.. Not only is your name questionable, but also is your comparison to the 360 and ps3 "add ons".
    Everyone knows, consoles are made to play games primarily. How many dvd remotes for the ps2 did you see fly off the shelves? Ps2's aren't used much as dvd players anymore, it's a fact. It's not why the console sells as much as it does now. Do you see sony advertising the dvd playback as much as they used to?

    Truth is, consoles playing movies is a hit or miss industry market now. You can buy portable dvd players, AWESOMELY cheap dvd players, nice dvd box sets to go with them etc etc.
    HD DVD and BLURAY is not going to be a large market, not for at least 4 years or so. It's for the people who have HDTV's. And for the most of us, if we DID want to watch HD movies, we would go for a movie format which offers us the same movies, for less.

    You can't actually give ONE reason why people would choose BLURAY over HDDVD. Why? Because people haven't even taken advantage of it, like, at all. Until it's all in mass production etc, we won't see a NEED to buy these HDDVD movies, or BLURAY movies until the inevitable switch-over to hdtv in like 5 - 6 years or so (when its more mainstream).

    By then, xbox 3 would be shown to us.. and the next new nintendo console. The ps2 was released in around 1999-2000. 6 Years later.. ps3 is on the cards. It's not hard to imagine, especially since the majority of ps2s were sold in the year 2001-2005. A 4 year market share. Did we care about it only lasting 4 years? Not at all. This 10 year crap is all speculation.

    If sony offer a 10 year guarantee, i will be surprised.. but they wont. Not even THEY believe in that 10 year cycle. If they did the guarantee, i would. I don't believe them, I dont believe that the $600 console would be the SAME console they will support for that 10 years.
    I expect a good few re-designs, price drops, and if the bluray fails to dominate, i can see it having removable drives too.

    Another aspect you forget is that sony apparently dont "care" because they are aiming at a different market (hence the price.. duuuuhh).

    If they wanted another ps2 on their hands, they would of delivered a powerful console, at a great price.
    But, they didnt. They are going for the finesse. And basically it's not working for us gamers.

    A large portion of us dont even SEE the need for next gen right now, alot of us are happy with okami and resi 4. Gamespot wouldnt give them 10 for graphics if they werent happy with how it looked.
    If it was $70 for a game, and $600 to be able to play it, im sure as a gamer you would see that even if the game gets a high score.. that TILT we all know about wont be as forgiving as we hope it to be.

    PAH! Comparing the 360 add ons to the ps3s package. If you want to pay $600 for a media console, then be my guest. The only reason I want a ps3 is for Ninja Gaiden Sigma, MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII and Virtua Fighter 5.
    Not for the media playback, not for anything else.
    If it plays those games well.. its money well spent.

    However, most people (which is the majority) aren't too bothered about a couple of games.. they want ALL the games.
    And the fact is, M4 simply are getting more games. FAR more games than the ps3 has even on presumed release. So if its the GAMES which are so important.. why pay £450 when you can pay £199. If its GAMES that matter that is...

    Same awesome franchises? What happened to those exclusives may i ask?

    Great hardware? I believe the ps3 has great hardware, but so does a porche. But it doesnt mean everyone has one.

    And if everyone DOESNT have one, developers move to the ones where everyone DOES have a console. It's a fact.
    More ps1 owners, more ps1 games, more ps2 owners, more ps2 games, more ds owners, more ds games.

    Fewer psp owners, fewer psp games, fewer psp umd movie sales, fewer psp movie releases (and avaliability).

    Those FACTS are hard to ignore against that Whole BLURAY PLAYS MOVIES AND GAMES nonsense. Oh yeah, i forgot how everyone hated metal gear solid 1 because you had to change discs half way through.. sheesh.
    Im being sarcastic by the way.

    The bigger the games, the longer the loads, the longer the dev time.. the fewer the releases. The majority of developers develop for a graphical standard. If it so happens that the 360 becomes the standard.. then you can bet your bottom dollar that the ps3 will be in the same boat as the xbox was with the ps2.

    And whats all this "milking" nonsense? Milk is what makes the world go round, son. Everyone needs, and needs to get milked in some way or another. Gamespot are infact milking US for subscription fees, BT milks me for the internet, the council milks me for the privalage of cutting some freakin grass!

    But nobody, sir, nobody knows the truth. If my name was nathan r jessop.. id know the truth, and the truth is -

    No freakin gamers LIKE the idea of having to pay out of the butt for the console. Its the GAMES we like the most. If we want hd movies, a couple of add ons is STILL worth it because its cheaper than a standard hddvd player..
    But if hddvd players come with 250gb hard drives as standard for the same price as a 360.. imagonna get me one of those one day, and so will the movie going public.

    You can't say that the ps3 is going to be better because of greater hardware and some freakin harddrive space! May I remind you WHO made harddrives COOL to have in consoles in the first place?!

    It's like you saying "the psp will be better because it has larger disc space for better games, all your favourite games will be on it, and it plays umd movies AND games.. HOOARR!"

    But then.. millions more ds owners beg to differ.. hundreds more ds games beg to differ.. all this "hardware" stuff is a no go area. Its the games that count, and as it lies, the 360 and the wii has more games.

    And again about the milking thing, i dont think people CAN get milked from behind (normally). You can't get milked unwillingly. You willingly spend money on a console in the hope that you will experience the best games and have the greatest time for your money.
    The ps2 delieverd MORE of this to us, for cheaper, and with MORE games.

    The ps3, is more expensive, is aiming at another market share to make money from, and its aim isnt dominating the world with the amount of games or game content.. if they were they wouldnt of let those exclusive titles slip would they!

    I dunno, once the dust settles over the christmas period, and the majority of us own 360's and wii's. Byt the time next summer comes out.. that whole "we dont care" motto will be old hat.

    Because we realy wont care either, once we get into some awesome gaming action, for less.

    At the end of the day, its about the games. If the hardware offers, its a bonus. But a games console is made to make games PRIMARILY. Not charge you $600 to play some freakin movies, most of us dont WANT this feature in the first place. And this can only mean even less sales for sony in the long run.

    I think they made a mistake aiming for a different market. And if they didnt "care".. then why go to e3? If it wasn't for healthy competition... they wouldn't of last-minute put motion sensoring in the pads.
    And if they CARED at all, they would of put rumble in there too and paid their dues to the patents just like the rest of 'em.. but apparently they "dont care" and we lose out some nifty features.

    I can't wait until 2008 because that way us gamers won't be so confused with certain games companies that like to say "we dont care" and hold their cards tightly to their chest.
    Sony needed to pay it's fans some dues. Not charge them a bucketload to do the primary things they want a ps3 for.. the games.

    At least with the 360 you can play games for a very great price as standard. And if you want the rest, you can get them and it STILL will cost cheaper than a standard hddvd player.

    I say to those that say "cows are getting milked.. forced".. I say "Cows are made to get milked..but the farmer "cares" about the cows".
    Sony apparently don't care that the competition is offering us a cheap price. I would think of that as idiotic. It's like Mcdonalds saying "We don't care that our burgers are going to go up tripple their price, more so than the competition".
    To survive in a business game, you need to learn the plays, master the oposition, and finally deliver that killer blow.

    But, this time sony sit there on their butts with a blue diode up their a***s and wait for us to buy ps3s.
    Sony have TOO much competition to not care - First you have the 360 with its very awesome games list. Second you have the wii with its awesome hardware prospects and awesome games lists (MASSIVE LISTS!). Then you have hddvd vs bluray..

    Apparently they dont care though!

    I wouldnt be surprised if Sony was run By willy wonka himself. Because not even WE know which way they are rowing... LOL

    Sony had the upper hand in previous 2 generations MOSTLY because of the games ...and now with the PS3 they have the games (same awesome franchises + new ones coming) AND a great hardware ...and now everybody complains, well... not everybody ...just the M$ fanboys mostly
    ...just because it's $100 more than the premium 360 (yes... i'm talking about the 20GB PS3 = $500)

    let's see... to $400 (yes... premium 360 price) we add:
    +$100 Blu-ray Drive for GAMES&movies (+ HDMI port) = $500 -> 20GB PS3 ...not to mention the superior hardware quality + internal power supply, noise free, etc. that a PS3 has over the 360
    Versus
    +$200 HD-DVD Drive add-on for movies ONLY (no HDMI port) = $600     ...great ...the price of a 60GB PS3 with just ONE addon ...what next?...other addons of course ...more money

    you heard some fanboys say :

    let's not forget that in the end it's all about the games, basically:
    - ppl that want/like playstation games get a PS3

    Hey xophaser.... WOW! I'm so impressed with your setup.... "I don't care" Your opinion of Games Consules as a casual gamer will have a significant impact on us Hard Core gamers...     This new format is in the service for better games and that's what the next gen is all about. We'll see soon if MS will need more space thann 9GB.

    -neither elder scrolls or DOA are exclusivesto X360. X360 has a few exclusives that are worth something. Ps3 has the awesome exclusives that will almost alone sell the console. Only a stupid Microsoft fanboy wouldn't want to play Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy etc. It's a fact that Playstation has the best games and that's what the consoles are all about- the games.

    You think that someone will buy X360 after the Wii and Ps3 come. Even now the sales are not going as expected, soon it will be bye bye X360. Especially in Japan.

    first off i'm not a fanboy I love sony I own a Playstion and a 61' sony tv walkmen and lots of other sony products. But I'm not some blind consumer who will buy anything that sony slappes it name on. I'm mad at sony for the poor decisions they have been making. For consoles the focus should be about the games and how to make them better not how to get people to adopt their new format

    If PS fanboys do not want to read negative stuff, then petition Sony to stop all the bad marketing they have got themselves into.

    Have you ever heard a more lame excuse for the absense of force feedback? It has been a part of controllers since like forever... It's BAD marketing to NOT PAY for the lisence of an utterly successful technology that everyone loves to use. Why, Ken, can I not have BOTH force feedback and motion sensing? Wouldn't that pack a mean punch to X360 and Wii? Wouldn't you be able to throw it to the face of all those who have condemned PS3 before it even ships?

    It's also true that many new titles that are impressive and sought after, are released for X360. I'm sure that PS3 will have exclusive titles that we will drool on (Gran Turismo, Soul Calibur), but so does X360 (Elder Scrolls, Dead Or Alive). PS2 was so much more successful than XBOX because XBOX was released much later, it was a first attempt that nobody knew if they would like it, and for those reasons companies were reluctant to release their games for XBOX. In the case of X360 and PS3 it will be gloves-off from the beginning, so Sony can no longer automatically enjoy first place. That takes us back to the demand for strong marketing moves, which Sony seems to lack.

    And what's Kutaragi's take on all of this? Not "we will do something"... Not "we will surprise you"... It's "we don't care". Except everyone knows they care - it's impossible not to. He could have said that about PS2, and he would have been right, because, whatever the reasons for it, PS2 was the undisputed winner of the last generation. Of course maybe it was so because someone in Sony bothered to care back then.

    THATS WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO THINK. IF THEY CAN SELL THE PS3 WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE MOST ADVANCED GAMMING CONSOLE. WITH THE BEST GRAPHICS. THEN THROW IN BLU-RAY, AND IT ONLY COST 600 BUCKS. THERE OVER CHARGING FOR THE STANDALONE BLU-RAY PLAYERS. THERE DOING IT ON PURPOSE TO HELP BOOST SALES OF THE PS3 CUS PEOPLE WILL THINK WELL WE CAN GET A BLU-RAY PLAYER CHEAP WITH THE PS3, MIGHT AS WELL GET IT.

    Oh please, for the love of god, shut up. Who cares which system'll win. Since the SNES, I bought nearly every system that came out, at least if there were some worthwile games on it. As of now: X360 with PD Zero, and later Gears of War and Alan Wake. WII: Zelda, Metroid Prime, and possibly a RE game in which you can search an old mansion with a flashlight. Although I'll only buy it if Rare games (Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, GoldenEye) will be downloadable. And the PS3? MGS4, sounds like it could be awesome. As for the rest, I don't know. The hardware specs have continually been tweaked down. 'Rockets can be controlled with the PS2', anyone? I don't doubt the PS3 will be slightly better than the 360. Hell, it would even be better if it was just less noisy. But it won't grind its competitors to dust, even a kid can see that.

    Who did not see this coming. A "manufacturing problem". Oh please. You say your going to have 6 mil. consoles by march 2007? Yeh lets see if that one hits 1 mil at the very most. Bottlenecking your shipments is great, but if you do it like this its failure. Could you IMAGINE they JUST found the problem in the european launch manufacturing thing. All like about 1,000 consoles were made before, etc. You been working on this stuff for what now 10 years on 1 chip, a $700 product. This thing better work, and ill flip if i see any crazy glued wires.

    Hardware is everything sony said. Look when the PSP came out, all the hardware didnt sell, at all now for instance. Last time I saw a product promising hardware like that, the market value dropping that fast, is comparable to one of those 1 mil smart bombs. That thing worth 1 mil, that thing dropped and it BLEW UP!

    5.1 surround sound with tower speakers (no tin can speakers)...check
    PS3, not out till Nov. but $600+...check.

    I am more of an audio/ video person not much of a gamer anymore. Maybe I am getting too old to be playing hours on a shooting game after work, but I will have the next slickest design technology and that is the PS3. I am in the design profession and the styling of the PS3 with silver trim is like somebody put some thought in how it would look in center of an AV system. It is absurd that these X and W(ii) fanbabies are jumping on Sony case just because they can't afford this system. Let all start complaining on every single Sony press releases as that is going to be the end to Sony. This is starting to sound like when all the Apple people were jumping on Windows OS case and Microsoft is still as strong as ever. Sony is in the business of making money, they figures some of their original playstation owners are a lot older now and can afford to buy a more complete AV system.

    I loved Zelda games when I was like 11 years old; Nintendo is still sticking to that kiddy group. X-box was bringing out the PC gamers to the living room. I'll just watch some Blu-ray movies and show off some games on my 1080p LCD. Oh yes, it does play games on the PS3 also.

    If enough of us leisure money professionals buy the PS3 maybe in 2-3 years the mass can afford it with the drop in price or become old enough to get a job.

    Of course Ken isn't worried about the competition. He's too concerned with having stabbed the Japanese market in the back to worry about a little thing like competition.

    On another note; their arrogance is reaching crazy big levels. Such attitudes have destroyed whole empires, let alone a company like sony. When mr kojima abandons the good ship sony, the end shall be at hand.

    Spelledarn, why would it result in uncertainty for gamers? I don't know if I will get the HD-DVD, normal DVD's look good enough. You mention you're waiting for the true next-gen, you're entitled to your opinion, even if it's an ignorant one. All systems that are coming out in this "generation" are "next-gen".

    No one system is any better than the other, they just offer different things at the table. I want all three, will I buy all three? Maybe eventually, I have real bills to worry about, no need spending over a thousand dollars on consoles, when I could be paying rent and buying food for ten months. Price drops will happen eventually.

    Why is it a good thing releasing unfinished hardware and then completing it bit by bit, Fritz? Aside from meaning that the end product will be more expensive than with a single package, it will also result in uncertainty for developers and gamers alike.

    One system already tried to do what you advocate: The Sega Genesis + Sega CD + Sega 32X. End result? Outright failure.

    I'd rather wait for true next gen, i.e PS3.

    It's a bummer that there aren't so many PS3's on launch day. I'm not going to purchase one until I can just walk into a store and buy one myself. Getting the 360 on launch day was almost impossible and I don't want to make the same mistake again with the PS3. Besides the Wii and all the great 360 titles launching this holiday season will keep me busy until I can get my hands on one.

    Wait Wait Wait..Tell me this is funny...I remember reading one time that When they ask that crazy ken who will win next gen war he said PS3..What happend recently... quote.."When asked his opinion of the PS3's competitors, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii, Kutaragi was blunt. "We don't care," he flatly told the trade. PS3 lovers i'm sorry..they should of taken their time..Like Xbox 360 who took their time..and now will release the hd dvd player sepratly reducing console cost.. + giving it more ability..as it is external hardware...Go 360 n Wii bad PS3

    I'd like everyone to just say "We Don't Care" about the PS3 and it's rediculous price and their constant screw ups... but... we do care.. and we'll still buy it.. DAMN YOU!

    With the price set so high, I doubt the PS3 will meet it's expected sales numbers. A lot of gamers, at least majority of the ones I know, can't afford something like that. I am one of 8 in my group of friends that has a 360. The popular comment I hear is "I'm getting a Wii." The PS3 does have impressive hardware and IF it were cheaper, I'd totally consider getting it. But the fact remains, with the price set so high the casual gamer, high school and college, can't afford a PS3.with the MS line up for November being as Powerful as its looking right now i wont have enough for all the games and acessories for my Xbox 360.Not to metion that im definantly getting a Wii.So soory sony youll get my money when there is a price drop or when ur cell processor generates way better looking games than what the Xeon processor on the 360 could put ok i mean come on .look at FORTZA 2, FEAR ,and a little game called GEARS OF WAR most trailers for it are real time gameplay not that prerendered **** that killzone was last year.

    They are getting cocky. the problem is is that people who don't follow game news and progress think that playstation is good because it was out first and Sony has exploited and are now abusing there social status. just like Apples i-pod.

    That was pretty funny TintedChimes. Anyways, honestly I love sony's consoles and I support the games. But I really don't care about how they 'don't care' about the competition out there. They should just keep quiet and let their actions speak louder than those pesky words and just be about business.
