Jaffe drops hints for next game

Developer resurrects old blog to confirm that PSP project HL is shelved for now, says next game should be out by end of January.

Sony game designer David Jaffe has apparently resurrected his old blog with news of his latest projects. While the God of War director's slate of upcoming titles has been unclear since he finished work on the PlayStation 2 action hit, recent updates indicate that he has stopped working on one project but is getting close to completing another.

As far as the concrete information in the blog, development on Jaffe's PlayStation Portable project, thus far only known as "HL," has been paused.

"That game is--for the moment--on the shelf," Jaffe said of HL. "The core reason is that it was very ambitious and so was/is [the PlayStation 3 game] WarHawk. The same developer is making both games (with some key members shared between both games), so Scott (head of Incog) and I said: f*** it. We'll do HL later...maybe. But for now, let's make something else."

The blog doesn't spell out what that "something else" is, but gives a number of hints about it. For one, Jaffe expects it to be released between November and January, "depending on a handful of factors." It plays in 1080p resolution and has been in development for six or seven months. Beyond that, Jaffe said it is not a game like God of War or HL, but that it has things in common with Bomberman and Twisted Metal.

In a post from last week, Jaffe said, "Sadly, our new game will not be at [Tokyo Game Show 2006] this week but it will be hitting the air waves (as in, you can purchase it from like, you know, the air waves!) in the next few months if all goes well...so stay tuned!"

Given the confirmation that the game plays in 1080p and the above comment, it seems that the designer's next project is a downloadable PS3 game to be distributed over Sony's answer to the Xbox Live Marketplace.

"I CAN [emphasis in original] tell you that man, SHORTER, LESS EXPENSIVE GAMES [emphasis in original]...wow! What a BLAST [emphasis in original] to be working on these things," Jaffe wrote in his latest update. "I feel like the old cartoonists who used to make Bugs and Daffy must have felt, how Rankin-Bass must have felt, pumping out show after show after show...just knocking them out. And some are--worst case--just average, while some are amazing...but it adds up to a hell of a batting average over time and lots of fun games. I have not dug the work this much in ages!"

I love how people are proclaiming "the psp is dead and ds rules". Well the psp most certainly isn't dead, and the ds only rules if you actually like the system. I don't have either at this point, however I do plan to get one. I'm one who likes to research before i buy something, and you know what? It looks like I'll be getting a psp. I've tried the DS and a number of the so called good games for it. Got bored with everyone of them within the first few minutes of play. That system has so much potential that is IMO wasted on stupid gimmickly little games when it could be so much more. So why will I get a psp? Cause it actually has games that I would enjoy. And thats a good enough reason for me.

who gives psp is wasting my time , no killer aps and most games and ports found else where sony is a great console maker but poor handheld maker cause they forget about the key things a handheld needs that is battery life that exceeds 10hrs at least(while playing a game , 2 the games prices are 49.99 same as consoles but lack the graphics quality of them 3 there is no need for a 199 version the 249,99 version is better then the 199,99 version is actually a ripoff it isnt really a price drop at all cause when you say a price drop you dont drop the value and take things out of the package and then come back later with another 249,99 price tag with different stuff for reall ds or ds lite had price drops they never took out a stylus or wrist strap or a cloth thing or anything for that matter that is a real price drop cause your not forced to buy things they take out

thats cool, if it took 6 or 7 months to make then I'm guessing its not that long, it should be good though.

If PSP was dead then developers wouldn't be making more games for it, would they?. In fact it's doing great for its first attempt at the handheld market, and all the great games coming out on it throughout fall and Q1 07 will be the defining point of its success as a gaming machine.

''hmm more bad news for the PSP, the system I would've bet money would kill the Nintendo DS

and somehow this has turned into a PS3/360 fanboy battle lol''

PS3/360 fanboy battles are as stupid as ''xbox 360 rules!'' comments.

"Why would he work on the PSP when the PSP cares little for games and more about movies? PSP is a waste of time to develop for. "

Yep. That's exactly why the PSP has over 100 more games scheduled to be released than the DS and on averages has higher rated top tier games. Way to stay on topic, since your little attack on the PSP has everything to do with Jaffe's new game. Knowing what Jaffe had said a while back, it'll be some fast paced, highly multiplayer based game. And with his excellent track record, I'm hoping the game is as immaculately done as his last projects.

You call Sony making games at the resolution the promised as ownage... hilarious.

I would only expect this from them... at a minimum based on what they have promised.

But for now, let's make something else." Sounds like his brainchild was not very good, if it was actually good then it would continue in development through outsourcing or a re-arranging of personnel. His "f*** it" comment with "We'll do HL later...maybe." with emphasis on maybe mean NEVER. He was s**tcanned. Dumped. Told his project sucked.

I loved God of War but since then this guy has just gone on and on about how great his ideas are and what they will develop into. However, we find that he is just a LOSER.

Now he is kissing Sony *ss by creating a downloadable game that cost not much to make but sucks the life out of our pockets; he says it himself that some of these downloadable games are not so good, I assume he means himself too.

Now we find Mr. Jaffe doing the same thing American McGee did with his name. He is attaching his name to a game for attention by the gaming public. Great another episodic masterpiece. Just like American McGee.

I am SO DISAPPOINTED. He had so much promise with God of War. I guess fame and fortune ruin talent. I expect after a couple of duds Jaffe will go to China too.

    I really hope GOW2 doesn't stink.

How is Jaffe ripping off M$? He's a software designer? And, really, MS is ripping off all of the PC game designers who first made episodic content and short games available via web only. Nimrod.

I don't have a 360, because I don't have the clams, but I like the idea of smaller, indie-type studios (no, I don't mean Incog) putting out short/cheap games via web. I'm looking forward to see what comes on all three platforms via this medium.
