X06: Xbox Live Arcade Doom-ed

Classic first-person shooter from id Software gets a surprise release on Microsoft's downloadable game service.

The wait for nostalgia-hungry gamers wanting to play their favorite titles of yesteryear on the Xbox 360 can be interminable. The 360 version of Capcom's Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting, originally announced in January, was delayed repeatedly before finally arriving on the Xbox Live Arcade in August. Fighting fans looking forward to the 360 edition of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, originally announced for the Arcade in March, are still waiting for the game to arrive.

Such was not the case for id Software's classic first-person shooter Doom. The PC game was announced for the Xbox 360 earlier today during Microsoft's X06 media briefing, and the game itself was released on the Xbox Live Marketplace almost simultaneously. The game is actually a port of Ultimate Doom, including that game's fourth episode, "Thy Flesh Consumed."

Nerve Software did the honors in bringing the game to the Xbox 360 and made sure to throw in a few features along the way. In addition to the mandatory achievements and leaderboards every Xbox Live Arcade game supports, Doom also has "enhanced graphics," 5.1 surround sound, and online or split-screen modes in cooperative and deathmatch flavors for up to four players.

Doom is available to download for 800 points ($10) and is rated M for Mature.

The difference between the GBA and 360 versions is the GBA release had much of the gore removed. The 360, however, is Doom in all its greatness.

Is it worth getting for the multiplayer alone? I already have the single player version that came w/Doom 3, so the only reason I'd get it is for MP.

Please, PLEASE don't bring Duke Nukem back. That was one of the worst "me too" games released. Now everyone repeat after me: "WE WANT QUAKE..."

I think the way it works is a 15 yrs old can download it, even though it is rated M, but because of the parent controls can't play it.

So on most of the Xbox Live Arcade games I actually stop and wonder if I should spend the points on them.... but with Doom, the second I heard it was up on Live, I signed on and downloaded it without even debating it. This is by far the best Xbox Live Arcade game to date.

Aside from achievements and online play it's pointless to play it on 360. Though it's good that it's a real live arcade game. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uh, that's the main reason to play it on the 360. That's 2 out of 3 major aspects to play the game.

PS. What is this talk of Killer Instinct? I think the reason why you won't see that game on XBLA is that it might be greater than 50 megs.

  • aldrenar47

P.S. This game is way better than Doom 3.

The "enhanced" graphics thing probably just means they slapped a filter on it (like you can do in emulators) so it would look better on HD sets or something.

What doesn't make sense is that this is an M-rated game (the first M XBLA game btw) but I was able to download it even though my account is registered for a 15-year old. Something tells me that Jack Thompson is gonna get involved....

It's nice to see that they threw in "Thy Flesh Consumed"... I'm still looking for those "enhanced graphics" though. Oh well, it's Doom so I can't complain that much. Time to make the gibs, baby.

this was a great surprise - I know many would have preferred Killer Instinct, but I think a Doom on the arcade is kinda neat.

    Posted Sep 27, 2006 6:53 pm PT

yea, Doom was one of those great shreware games back in the day where you got a whole chapter which was pretty much a game in itself for free or $2-3 for a floppy. Then you had to pay like $30 for the other 2 chapters (and later a 4th chapter). I've actually never tried the Final Doom chapter and with this release I'll finally get the chance. Though I think $10 would have been more worth it if they added Doom 2 as well.

Only the first chapter was originally free, you had to pay for the rest.

  • Kravyn81

    Posted Sep 27, 2006 6:10 pm PT

SURPRISE! You gotta pay for $10 for this game that initially was FREE to DL when it first came out. Anyone else see the irony here. It would've been much better if they offered the game for free.

  • SteveTwo

    Posted Sep 27, 2006 6:09 pm PT

There are no enhanced graphics option, I don't know what they were refering to. There isn't even a mention of enhanced graphics in the XBL script. It's annoying because I paid the $10 just to see what the enhanced graphics would be like. Thanks GameSpot! :-p

Great game! I did download it already, though I feel $10 is a little too steep to pay for most ports of old games put on Xbox Live Arcade. Keep releasing these games at $10 a pop Microsoft, and I WILL stop buying them. "

Well as long as you keep buying them at $10, they will keep selling them at $10. The time to boycott is now--not next year or the year after.
