TGS 06: "White Knight" comes to PS3

Developer of Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy unveils next project with first story details and gameplay footage.

Sony unveiled a handful of new PlayStation 3 titles during the first day of the 2006 Tokyo Game Show. Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Sega Golfclub, and Wangan Midnight were in the initial batch of new games, but after the show floor opened, Sony dropped the news of another big PS3 title, Shirokishi.

Shirokishi

Check out the new fantasy RPG from Level 5!

Shirokishi is being developed by Level 5, the studio behind role-playing games like Dark Cloud and the upcoming Rogue Galaxy for the PlayStation 2, and the canceled Xbox massively multiplayer online game True Fantasy Online. "Shirokishi" literally translates to "White Knight," but that's still just a working title for the moment.

In the game, a coming-of-age ceremony for the princess of a peaceful land is disrupted by a mysterious group dressed in black. They burn down the castle and murder the king, but before they can get to the princess, a young wine merchant who meets the princess by chance sneaks her away into the castle's underground vault. There they discover a relic pulled from ancient ruins, the armor of the White Knights.

A trailer released for the game shows several minutes of gameplay, with the main character and two traveling companions ambushed along a road by a group of soldiers in black armor. The combatants pair off and battle one-on-one for the most part, until the player characters get a numbers advantage and begin to doubleteam their opponents.

Most of the combat in the first skirmish is more swords than sorcery, but things take a larger-than-life turn a little on down the road, when a giant fire-spewing, spiderlike boss appears to attack the trio. At this point the lightly armored protagonist responds by plunging a dagger into his gauntlet and transforming into a white knight alter ego, every bit as imposing as the boss, and the trailer comes to a close.

In March, Level 5 president told Japanese site Gpara that his team was working on another game, and dropped some hints about it. He said that it would be an RPG with a subgenre, although he wouldn't disclose whether it would be strategy, action, or something else. However, he hinted that it wouldn't be something completely radical, saying that, "for people that love these [RPG] types, this will be a really cult game." In its promotional materials, Sony lists Shirokishi simply as an RPG.

Currently the game is only 10 percent complete and has been given no release date or price.

I don't get what all the hype is about... I can see some serious POTENTIAL here, but not much more than that. IF, however, I were to judge it based on the trailer of a game thats only 10% complete, then I would say it looks super linear, improves on a KOTOR like battle system with cooperation (neat), and as for the White Knight part, unless it goes into a different battle system, it will likely be the duller part of a battle (like the difference between watching a battle in Gundam 0080:WiaP versus "BURNING FINGER!"). But that wouldn't be fair, would it? Give us a steady supply of downloadable content, multiplayer would likely be awesome, and include plenty of side-quests from the get-go, and this could be one kick a-- game!

I'm interested thou, what can this game bring to the table?

If it'll turn out any good without any mayor problems I think I'll buy it when it comes.

OMG!!! No load time, great battle system concept, great graphics, what more can you ask from a game?! Just hoping for the voice cast for the english version to actually not spoil the game on the whole.

i think that Optimusv2 might have a point there 10% probably means they wont have enough for gameplay, more likely to be pre rendered showing what the gameplay will be like... 'cos 10% wont have any playable content unless they have a demo version. i must say if it isn't they did a good job of hiding it.

Holy crap... this game looks awesome. And whoever said that none of that was gameplay, I think you're wrong. It wasn't all gameplay, but the beginning of the first battle was definitely gameplay. This title is gonna be HUGE. That fighting system looked outstanding as well.

10% completion means what was shown wasn't actual gameplay, but a target video. It isn't going to be as playable as that video showed at 10% completion guys.

I love Level 5. Dark Cloud 2 took me 100 hours to beat! If a game like this lasts 100 hours I would be willing to get a PS3 for it. Please give me a reason to get a PS3 Level 5, please.

WOW, this game's looking GREAT!!!! cult game I'm sure too! but... err... 10% complete? :'( nooooooo!!! I wish I could play in early 2k7...
anyway, this game will rock! I mean, blue dragon is not at all as good as I though from what I saw, and lost odyssey looks good, but not much "special" features, I mean, not a lot of inovation there, apart for the graphics, but that's not "inovation". lost odyssey looks good, but shirokishi is looking GREAT!! and FFXII and FF versus XII. And enchanted arms was looking OK, so I'll maybe also take it for my future ps3... dunno. I also have to buy MGS4, DMC4, maybe genji 2 ( if the game last longer than it's predecessor, heavy rain... etc etc, too much game, not a lot of money... damn, I need more money :'(

Man, I've dreamed of RPG's having combat like this. If it is only 10% done then I hope they make it amazingly-mind-numbingly good by 100%. It's already amazing.

    Halo 3 - prerendered?
    Are you stupid?
It was realtime on real console - not this lets-show-a-movie-Killzone-2-style....."
    .
    .
We only have Bungie's word that Halo3 was running realtime. I don't trust any of these companies anymore until I at least play a demo. They all try to decieve the public about what their game will be like. However, this game White Knight is showing some convincing footage that looks realistic enough for me to give them the benefit of the doubt. I can't wait to hear more on this game. Hopefully it can make it out by the end of 2007 but I won't hold my breath.

wow! I keep looking at the trailler... I've been on the side that thinks 500 is to much to play games (I can buy it but never thought it worth it) but if this is how PS3 games look and play, I'm having 2nd thoughts.

its only 10% so I"m still one of the people that wont get it in NOV, but if PS3 games are like this as the year keeps going, I'll pick one up.

I think everyone was pretty surprised by how slow and clumsy battles looked in Lost Odyssey. I agree with those who say Shirokishi, comparatively, seems to flow more smoothly.
Both games have a somewhat unpolished feel, though. It's too early to form a definitive judgment on either one.
I just hope that both turn out great by the time gamers can finally get their hands on them.

"if this game is only 10% Done and they are already talking about it, and the fan hype on the board i'm willing to bet that it will be ported"

It can't be ported to a non sony console this game is being published by SCEI.

I think it probably wont be ported. None of Level 5 games being ported to other platform and their products are PS2 exclusive.
