Wii arrives in Europe on December 8 for £179

Nintendo's next-gen console to launch in Europe for £179/249 euros on December 8, AU$399.95 for the Aussies on December 7.

Nintendo has announced that its next-generation Wii console will hit Europe on December 8 for a recommended retail price of £179/249 euros ($335.87/$314.57). The release date puts the region's launch a few weeks behind the US, where it debuts on November 19, and Japan, where it hits stores on December 2. With the recent postponement of the PlayStation 3 in Europe until March 2007, Nintendo's Wii will be the region's only console launch this Christmas.

Australia will get the Wii slightly earlier, on December 7, for AU$399.95 (approx. £160/$300.38). Both the European and Australian packages will contain the white console, one Wii-mote controller, the nunchuck attachment, and the game Wii Sports. In Europe, software will cost £34 to £39 (49 to 59 euros), and there will be 15 to 20 games available from launch. Among the confirmed launch titles are The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Need for Speed: Carbon, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, and Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz.

As for accessories, Wii owners will be able to buy extra remotes for £29 (39 euros), a nunchuck for £14 (19 euros), and the classic controller for £14 (19 euros). For more details on the worldwide release of the Wii, check out GameSpot's launch centre.

    I was very pleased with the price of the Wii, especially since I do recall the PS2 being about £200 upon it's launch, so to have a next gen cheaper than the old gen is definately great. I've also been concerned with the £50 price tag on the 360 games but again, Nintendo have done a good job, yes there is a slight rise in the price, but that is to be expected as it's shiny and new. PSP games cost £35, PS2 games cost between £30 and £35, XBOX is £30 to £35, PC is still £30 (where it has been for quite some time) whilst Gamecube games have really varied between £30 and £40, I assume because the Gamecube never really hit it off in comparison to the other two and since it's slowly being phased out, the games are more expensive. To hear that the most a Wii game will cost is £40 is very good, it means that yes there is a slight rise but it's still affordable instead of the £15 to £20 price jump that the 360 and (I assume) PS3 have. The price of the controllers aren't bad either, does anyone know if the GC pads are compatible with the old GC games or will I need a classic controller? Either way i'll need to buy a controller because i'll be trading in my GC when I get the Wii and it only has one controller, can't very well trade it in without offering up the controller as well, lol.

    I'm getting really excited about this now, but why does America get it first? You'd think the Japanese would be the first to get it. As for the PS3... well, I wish I could say I liked Sony as a company, but I don't. It isn't even the delay in Europe that has annoyed me, it's their sheer determination to make sure that no one in Europe can use one until March and their whole attitudes. Yes, Sony probably will come out on top again once it finally has a wordwide release but their attitude stinks. I'm getting a PS3 in late 2007 to conincide with when Devil May Cry 4 is released, since that is the main PS3 game I have my eye on right now, so until DMC4 is released I will be content to stay PS3-less. Though there is one benefit to the PS3 and region free in general, living in the UK i'll expect to pay £50+ on a PS3 game, but I can simply import it from America for £30, even with the tax etc it'll still be cheaper and i'll get it earlier than I would here in the UK. Heck, since DMC4 is always done in English and subtitled in Japanese I could import it from them and get it really early, provided Capcom don't region lock it, lol. Plus, it'll be good to finally put my HD TV to some kind of HD use.

    ps3 il have to give a miss for the time being as its well to expensive £449 is a hell of a lot of money in the UK to pay for a console

    Well I want a black Wii too, but I only get $6 [Aussie] a week so I won't get mine until August sometime, by which I hope the price has dropped slightly and we can get a black Wii to match my black DS lite, my Black Ipod, my black computer, and an [obviously] black Ps2 so a black Wii would be the finishing touch [until the Ps3 price drops]

    I still feel aus is copping the raw prawn on the price again, because the US got it for $250 US and that is equivelant to $330 in Aus so we're paying $70 more [although they did put in the Nunchuck and Wii Sports so I guess that evens it out]

    And I think that the Box Art for Wii Games is really plain comaped to the other consoles.

    I will get a Wii first off but when the Ps3 price drops to $500 Oz [which I bet it does, the Ps2 came out for $800 AUS and now it is $219 AUS] I will definatly get one as I am still drooling over that Ratchet and Clank Ps3 video and FF XIII

    I am looking forward to red steel, i would never buy it if it wasnt for the wii remote. Which is why i want to get a wii, it makes me not be so biased with games like i used to be.

    Also, if the rumour for gta or similar game for the wii is coming out.. man.. awesome. The controls would be perfect. And i cant be bothered to re-write this, so i just copy and paste my own words lol -

    Being able to run around in gta with the nunchuk analog, beat people with a baseball bat with the wii remote.
    Or, drive a car by holding the nunchuk and wii remote like a steering wheel. Like, the way you would grasp a steering wheel naturally (nunchuck is left side of wheel, wii remote is right side). And you could also, steer the wheel one handed with the nunchuk and shoot out the window with the wii remote.

    You could even possibly punch people, like with wii boxing, but on gta. aim with a sniper rifle the way you should.. Shoot a shotgun and reload action with the nunchuk..

    You see, this is why im excited about the wii remote, not only do the games on launch look great (sonic, trauma centre etc) but the possibilities of the future games which can come out. No longer will youre average "sequel" be just a point of being graphically better. I think with the wii, i am more excited about the possibilites.

    But on the other side, im excited about all those zombies in dead rising. But being able to kill them with the wii remote? man, even better.

    Yeah cool, but that 360 is getting impressive some of the games look sweet, guess I am going to give the ps3 a miss this generation, your post was very small, bit disapointed, so far just ordered twilight and mario, but will go for trauma and red steel, all great games, lol.

    Well, im glad that whole PRICE thing has finally died off. I think most people have angrily moved onto the 360 news by now. haha

    Im happy with the wii price, it means i can get a bunch of games for a reasonable price for a launch system.
    And i reckon, i would be having as much fun with the wii, than the 360, for less price aswell. Cool ey?

    Well they would be spot on about the ps3 price, considering the competition and the standards of the ps3 games we have seen lately, the wii is not expensive considering we earn more over here as our currancy is worth more, so give over already, besides the price is not confirmed, it is just estimated at the moment.

    Actually.. we pay less than aussies by £10, and compared our total comes to $285.. this INCLUDES tax.. whereas the usa one doesnt.

    ALSO, the european euro conversion price into dollars makes the equivalent to being $265 from euroes to dollars. Either way, including the tax, we are like paying £20 more or something. Still, cant wait to see how people are going to react when they have already got wii's and 360's and are going to complain about the ps3 price.. £500? Insane. No wonder those people moan about the odd tenner here and there, because with the ps3, those tenners look like NOTHING

    Yeah thats what i meant lol First party games (bigger named games aswell) will be released at a £40 price or a bit less. And other, lesser titles (like maybe rayman etc) would be about £30.

    You know, i just thought about this now.. you know how the trend goes with nintendos consoles... like super mario 64.. super mario DS... i really REALLY hope the games dont take after the console name at the end.
    Like Resident Evil Wii... or Super Mario Wii.. etc. It would be just awful.

    It would be awesome if a game came out for the xbox 360 called "High Powered".. and for the wii it would be called "High Powered Wii".

    Nintendo first party games will retail at the estimated retail price of between 49 Euros and 59 Euros (£34 to £39 in the UK). so who knows even the £179 for the console is only estimated as it is not final.

    What an amazing price for a brand new console. I remember me ol' dad paying £199 for my SNES with Streetfighter 2. And to get this for even less is fantastic! A quick comment to to all those bad mouthing the price of the Wii. Are you serious??? The console is only slightly less powerful than a 360 (my brother has one so thats a first hand fact) the Wii remote and Nunchuk are a pricey pair of kit on their own and you get a fantastic game to play with your friends and family right off the bat. So what the hell are you bad mouthing??? It is an absolute bargain!

    Anyone agree?

    I reckon the games will be around £29.99 same as gamecube titles. I dont now why tho. Maybe the first party games will be released at £40.. But i think that will be more for BG games like zelda, metroid, mario galaxy, red steel etc

    I think games like rayman, sonic secret rings, excite truck will be about £29.99. Depending on the game you know? Super Mario Bros on the DS NEW is Still £29.99, sonic has dropped to £19.99 NEw (£24.99 in the most crazy places like whsmith) The reason why i think the prices will be like this is because if you compare the graphics of say a 360 game, to a wii game.. nintendo know, i think, that whats on the back of the box counts. Brain Training is £19.99 on its first day, because compared to metroid, even though brain training was hugely successful before even coming out here, because of the graphics, because of the genre the price was changed to a budget price.

    I mean, stick brain training next to asphalt urban GT at the same price.. Brain Training is SOO much better and more popular. But still really cheap. So i think, big games are going to be £40 at the most, and £30 for average kinds of games (not like zelda). If they re-release resi 4, i reckon a £30 price for that.

    BUT, third party can charge whatever they think is resonable, aswell as nintendo themselves. So price can go up and down, and considering nintendo are making money off the hardware aswell, its sensible to think they wont go crazy with software prices. Although, thats my thoughts alone here.

    Rouguesquardon.. i reckon the wii will sell gallons of wii (sorry LOL) over christmas. I hope nintendo haev enough of them, and i get to get one with ease!!
    Also, i think, as soon as a star wars game comes out where you use the wii remote like a light saber, and the nunchuk to use the "force". I think Nintendo will be a sure winner. because i mean, everyone wants to be a jedi!

    Gamespot should make a poll about that, then you should see what i mean! LOL

    Wii games will probably be about the same price as the 360s with the ps3 costing arround the £45 mark.

    Yeah use to ponder over that bit of plastic, just thought it was for getting the cart out easier, never found out, probably just a branding thing.

    Well I remember reading that they found a way to make a smaller cpu for the 360 which was cheaper and because of its size it created less heat. There was a rumor on this site about a internal HD dvd drive but I'm not sure, but they could do that cheaply, wouldn't help sony one bit that is for sure, lol.

    Some of those gamecube titles would be sweet, as the mentioned re4 and the likes of double dash, metroid etc...

    I think wii games will be about £10 less than 360 games (probably about the same as ds games cost.. about £29.99) Ps3 games are expected to cost anything between £60 - £80. WOW. I thought those days were over (when they used to be cartridges..)

    Hey do you (b_rob) And anyone else remember the EA catridges for the genesis, which used to cost a little more.. and everyone thought that little yellow bit on the left of the cartridge was a special chip, or battery? LOL

    Anyways. I hope to get a new case (black one from XCM) for the 360, i dont think the 360's specs will change, like, at all. Some things might change like a new make of cooling fan, or a new board with different points to stop piracy etc.. but i dont think the cpu will change as they are looking to reduce cpu manufacturing of the current one to cover costs. If they made a new improved one, it would cost them even more. I think anyways.

    ALSO, i read that satouru iwata (wii) said that they are considering re-making gamecube titles with wii remote functions. I can imagine resident evil 4 getting a remake, that pointing control system etc would be PERFECT for resi 4.

    We're becoming friends here Grim, us older gamers must stick together, yes I expect some great things from the wii and the 360, but I plan to wait on the 360 as I have heard some rumors on a smaller cpu, better cooling and hd-dvd being added, although they said they would never do it, as you can tell I'm playing the waiting game, I'm still not finished with the ps2 and gamecube they have still some great titles to come, mainly the ps2 and also the ds with the likes of castlevania, so time is on my side.

    I have never watched the tgs and don't know what to expect, and really hope to here some english, do they do press conferences before the main event?

    Im looking forward to trauma centre for the wii, sonic and the secret rings (it doesnt look awesome, but its sonic at least). And because nintendo usually get some really awesome exclusive titles (like resi evil) i can expect some kind of unique title coming along the way.

    I would be 100% 360 if there wasnt a wii. But the thing which attracts me to the wii is the versatility. There will be some more 2 or multiplayer games, there will be some great 1 player games.. the 360 so far has only dealt a small handful of 2 player games, most of the 2 player aspect have been honed for the xbox live though, and not so much with split screen or whatever.
    I too am going to wait for TGS, i dont think sony could pull a rabbit out of the hat which would be bigger than M$ or Nintendo, so for this reason i think the wii and the 360 will get a much larger aspect of games etc. And if any of them are as cool as dead rising, or as fun to play as trauma centre on the ds for the wii.. For me, from experience with the ds surprising me and impressive games with the 360. Im sort of dead cert that a 360 and a wii is the choice for me.

    I wouldnt get JUST a 360 or JUST a wii, because the games will be quite different from eachother. Much like if i just stuck with my psp, i would miss out on the even more fantastic ds games.. but then on the other hand with the psp i wil miss the release of sonic rivals and silent hll 0.

    If i was on a budget, i would definately get a wii, try it out, wait for some great games to come out for it. You could always sell it on ebay, because i think it will be a desirable console. The ps3, you probably wont get what you paid for it (same as 360) because with expensive hardware second hand, people want a bargain you know.

    Thanks for your reply Grimbee, I reordered a wii, but will decide by watching the TGS if I really want it, as I want a 360 for mass effect, but don't want to play it until I get a hdtv, which will be arround october next year, so I was thinking a wii will tide me over, but am worried about that controller, as I prefer sitting down to play games, and every video show people jumping arround apart from the likes of metriod and red steel, so I'm still on the fence, and I think play will barr me soon as I keep canceling it, I really only want it for zelda and the likes of mario, zelda I can get for the gamecube and mario I could skip, so I really don't know that is why I asked you, thanks.

    I have access to a 360 in my dads home, but not at my home with my wife
    I got to play dead rising for a bit, and a few others like perfect dark, project gotham 3.

    I wasnt absolutely bemused by the graphics (like i was when i first saw silent hill 2 on the ps2.. after playing silent hill 1 this long time) but i was well impressed by all the zombies, the fluid gameplay (smooth framerate) and those awesome motion blur effects and shading effects.

    I always thought "nah, im not getting a 360 its too much for not much of a leap forward". The reason i got a ps2 for like £220 in its day, was because of gta3, silent hill 2 and it had a dvd player and i wasnt too keen on replacing my giant video collection!
    So i was sceptical about the 360, because i already had a dvd player, no need for hd dvd and there was no gamesi wanted to play (except perfect dark).

    That is, until dead rising came out.. never have i had the opertunity to kill so many zombies! gta was crap at going round killing living things, but this, with its swarm system and plethora of weapons. Even though i only played it for an hour, that game - and sonic - is enough for me to get a 360.. and not only that, but there are a lot of fourthcoming games i am looking forward to like resi 5 and gta 4. On the 360, to get these games ALONE is worth £200. However, they definately arent worth a bog standard £500 without even thnking bout getting any games!

    So yeah, I think the 360 has enough power to deliver an awesome gaming experience, especially if silent hill 5 is coming out for it (im only keeping my psp for sonic rivals and silent hill 0 LOL) its a reasonably priced piece of kit, i would upgrade my pc to the 360 specs, however 360 games seem a better deal (more of them that i like) and it would cost me alot. Otherwise if the 360s games were ALL out for the pc.. i would just spend the cash on the pc.

    As for the wii.. heres a story for ya.
    When the ds first came out, the only hand held i owned was a gp32 (awesome little thing it was). And the site i got it off sold japanese ds' before they were even over in the uk.
    The ds had NO games which interested me, i was having far more of a good time playing megadrive on the gp32.. and the psp SEEMED the proper system to get because of the specs. And having a gp32, a system is exciting JUST because of the specs.

    I was going to get a psp, but that freakin price? no freakin way! The gp2x was coming out soon (successor to the gp32) and it would emulate pretty much everything it could at perfect speed (it alreay does neo geo, mame, genesis, snes, and even has a crack at the ps1!!)

    My walkman (minidisc) broke, and argos didnt have a replacement, so i got a ds with sonic rush instead. I only got it because of sonic rush, i wouldnt of otherwise because the ds did look absolutely crap. I was still wanting a psp, but from arguing on forums about the gp2x, the psp had an absolutely poor battery life for emulation, and the memory cards were damn expensive. so that whole media thing is a waste of money. The gp2x plays any kinds of avi files without converting, and uses like 4 gb sd cards which are far cheaper than memory sticks.

    SO, i got the ds, played sonic rush. I didnt think the "rush between 2 screens" would be good for a sonic game.. but man, hands down, one of the greatest sonic experiences ever (far better than the crappy riders, and heroes and shadow the hedgehog).

    After that, i went to gamestation and had a look around at some games. Because i was really surprised how much fun i was having with the ds.
    I got phoenix wright, because it seemed like SNATCHER, and i totally love that game (hope it comes out for the ds, its perfect for the ds!).

    Then, i was hooked. Then i got advance wars.. hooked again.. trauma centre.. Totally hooked (and then had to remove it with the stylus and surture it LOL ) I even got Nintendogs.. mario kart, mario 64.. touch golf.. The list goes on really.
    Then, i sold the ds and the gp2x to pay off some debts. Sad sad day.
    But i kept the games. Which is good. Because i knew one day, i might get a ds lite.

    As soon as that came around, there were even MORE games to buy.. metroid, brain training, mario bros.. I also loved the new sleek design of the ds lite. So i got both a black and white ds lite haha.

    Shortly after, i got a psp aswell for which i paid £30 for from my brother in law who didnt want it haha. And basically, the psp, is good for £30. But i end up spending all my moolah on the ds.

    Anyways, i was so surprised that the ds was so good. I played it more than my pc, and thats sayign something! I read more and more about the wii.
    The ps3 was my original intention because of the games coming out for it. But then i heard the price. Absolutely ridiculous! and i thought the 360 was expensive!! Anyways, because of my experience with the ds.. i can see how the wii will appeal to me, trauma centre is coming out for it. And i like loads of styles of games, TOO MANY actually. And normal consoles never really give me that "woah, awesome game" feeling like the ds did and only resi 4 gave me that feeling aswell. Not even silent hill 3 and 4 gave me that wow feeling, and the graphics on those games were awesome.

    For me, i have a gut feeling that im going to enjoy the wii. Its styled like to match a ds lite, its compact (wont take up my tv cabinet, or i could put it next to my pc) and because of the fresh experiences playing games on the ds i would NEVER of purchased, not in a million years (brain training for fecks sake) i can see how the wii will bring me some awesome gaming experiences.

    When i wanted a dreamcast, i saw all my favourite games, with AMAZING graphics.. that for me was enough to get one. But developers chose the ps2 instead, and the dreamcast ended up with a bunch of good games, and a load of crappy ports.
    I dont see the wii going this way at all. Because if its anything like a ds, its got my attention straight away. And the control system can only mean me having a varied choice of games, and to buy games i thought would be good.. but never bought.. (like, a darts game would be ideal for the wii).

    On christmas, im hoping to get a 360 with dead rising and sonic. And a wii with .. well.. im going to search gamespot for a bit longer til i decide which games to get.

    So thats my sort of feelings about the two consoles barrett_rob. I defend the wii, because i was once dissapointed with nintendo before. And then began to sound like most people on these news section saying that nintendo suck, and they are kiddy manufacturers etc etc). I defend it mainly because im a gamer, you lot are gamers, and to miss out on ONE great game because some may think graphics or blu ray counts.. and i feel its a gamers duty to properly inform everyone about what games define the industry, and what games sould be condemned lol
