360 COD2 breaches sales mark

Next-gen Xbox version of Call of Duty answered more than 1 million times in North America since its release; first Xbox 360 game to reach mark, says Activision.

Activision has known for a while now that it had a hit in Call of Duty 2 for the Xbox 360. The World War II shooter was the top-selling game for the Xbox 360's launch, and has shown staying power on the system's sales charts after replenished stock put more Xbox 360s in gamers' living rooms. The publisher also reported earning nearly $1 million in revenue from downloadable COD2 maps alone.

Today, Activision can add another impressive feat to its COD2 dossier. Citing NPD Funworld figures, the publisher claims the Xbox 360 version of the game has sold more than 1 million units in North America. According to Activision Publishing executive vice president Robin Kaminsky, COD2 is the first Xbox 360 game to break 1 million units sold in North America.

Since the game's release in November 2005, COD2 had been the top-played Xbox 360 title over Xbox Live until Madden NFL 06 took over the top slot in late August, says Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb on his blog. Activision has also released a Call of Duty 2: Game of the Year Edition, featuring some new map packs and additional content.

Call of Duty 2 is rated T for Teen and retails for $59.99. For more information, read GameSpot's review.

    I sure GRAW and Oblivion are also getting really close to selling 1 million. Then I think it wont take too long for Saint's Row and Dead Rising to also hit that mark.

    This game is amazing, great visuals and it runs so well on the 360, I thought it ran better on 360 than PC.

    Call of Duty 2 on the Xbox 360 is an amazing game! Even when Call of Duty 3 is released, it won't take away from the fact that Call of Duty 2 is such an amazing game! Plus, the only thing better than being able to play one or the other is being able to play both! The Xbox 360 is awesome, because only the Xbox 360 gives gamers the ability to play both Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 3!

    Right now at least us 360 owners have a game that sells 1 million. Typical of a Sony fanboy to bash the success of a 360 game. This game is at 1.4 million sold technically so no it did not take "this long". The only million sellers you are going to see from Sony at time soon is going to be coming for the PS2.

    360 = 1
    PS3= 0

    It took this long for a 360 game to get to 1 million.

    repus3000 said "While COD is indeedy a good game, it seems the more logical reason for its sales triumph isn't based so much on the quality of the game, but the relative lack of quality games on the platform. Much like the original XB is considered the "Halo Machine" due to a lack of original titles, COD remains the best game on the system nearly a year after launch.
    Here's hoping this machine gets better software, pronto."

    That's pretty untrue repus3000. There are many good games on the Xbox 360 with great scores from Gamespot. And many would argue that CoD2 is not the best but rather Oblivion is. I don't think you're argument holds much weight. Here are a few other great games on the Xbox 360 that have been around for awhile:
    Oblivion ( 9.6 )
    Ghost Recon AW ( 9.2 )
    Project Gotham 3 ( 8.8 )
    Burnout Revenge ( 8.8 )
    PDZ ( 9.0 )

    Plus, new games are coming out all the time that offer great new gameplay (Dead Rising, etc.). The Xbox 360 is not a one-game platform. You make yourself sound like a fanboy.

    "thekey
    CoD3 won't be as good as 2 for the 360 because infantry ward is not developing it. treciarc(I didn't spell it right on purpose) is doing it. (Remeber crappy spiderman 2 anyone?)

    COD3 is not going to be as good or look as smooth or run as smooth as COD2. Treciarc is going to make any effort to make the 360 or Wii version look or play good. Watch. I could be wrong but I doubt it. "

    Man, have you even watched ANY of the videos for CoD3??? I mean, the only thing I'd say is that I feel like the game may be a rush job because of them pushing it for a end of year launch...but man do the videos look AMAZING! They've boosted the multiplayer up to 24 players, the textures look even more detailed, sound effects are spot on, and judging from the video previews the game looks insanely fun.

    I hate WW2 games. I think there are too many. You played one of them, you've played them all. I've never said CoD2 was a bad game, but I'm tired of WW2 games. Just because one million people bought the game doesn't mean I'll suddenly go out and buy it. I don't want it. I'm Dead Tired of the WW2 shooter genre. God, if I see another Garand....

    What an ignorant thing to say: I hate WWII games. You guys think there are too many? I tooked a look your profiles. How many versions of Mario Kart and Yoshi on dope can you play? Didn't like that comment, right? Well, yes, it is a stupid argument. I could care less if its Halo17 or Mario52 or WWII-27. A good game is a good game. A million fricking people say you are wrong. Not only do they say you are wrong, but they have proved you drop dead idiots.

    As cool as Call of Duty 2 is on 360, I absolutely, with every fiber in my body HATE World War 2 games! My God! How many of them damned WW2 games have been made? I mean like every other month, there's a WW2 game being released. I know the war was big, but damn. I will not buy CoD2. I've had a 360 since March, and I've yet to buy the game. I never will. I've had too many WW2 games... when will people grow tired of the Garand?

    Nice recognition for a good game. Now MS, how about starting up a new Platinum Hits line, huh? I know that COD2 is still probably selling well but other games could benefit from it (PDZ, Kameo). Just throwing it out there...
