BAFTA announces game-award noms

LocoRoco, GRAW top list for high-profile UK event with eight nominations across a total of 17 categories; We Love Katamari, Guitar Hero also prove popular.

The nominations for the 2006 British Academy Video Games Awards have been announced and two titles stand out from the rest. LocoRoco and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter both received eight nominations across various categories, with We Love Katamari receiving six and Guitar Hero and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion both netting five each.

This is the first year that the Video Games Awards, which is put together by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), has been given a ceremony in its own right, separate from the organization's film and TV awards. It will be held at the Camden Roundhouse in London on October 5 as part of the London Games Festival, and hosted by popular UK television personality Vernon Kay.

Over 40 titles have been recognised in the award nominations and other multiple nominees include Hitman: Blood Money, Tomb Raider: Legend, Shadow of the Colossus, and Dr Kawashima's Brain Training.

There are no platform-specific categories in the awards. Nominations are instead split into various game genres and aspects, and games must have been released at some point in the 2006 calendar year to qualify for entry. Paul Jackson, chairman of the BAFTA games committee, commented that he hoped this event would "become the industry and consumers' benchmark of excellence."

GameSpot UK will be in attendance at the event to bring you news of the winners. The nominees in some of the categories are listed below; the full list is available on the BAFTA Web site.

The categories are too vague, such as "Game"--that doesn't say much. I rather see some that has as many categories as the Grammy's or Oscar, even it takes forever to present them all. People will never give much credit to these awards. I, myself, am having a hard time directly understanding why they nominated some games in some categories.

No offense, but this is a British Academy, it's only natural they "make room" for British afiliated games and forget about some other big dogs such as Dead Rising. Don't take me wrong though, I personally like Tomb Raider, Hitman: Blood Money, Fifa 06 WC, and Moto GP '06; I own them all, and I'm playing them right now (check my blog, and see my collection or gamertag).

Geez. Quit complaining. Fact is, these ARE this year's game. Mostly because this year sucked so far.

But there are actually so games which save themselves.

I checked the website .. games are eligible if they were released (or are to be released) during the 2006 calendar year.

I still find some of the nominations surprising ... Rockstar Table Tennis is also nominated under the Simulation category

BAFTA = British Academy of Film and Television Arts ... so why the interest in games ... "The Academy is now committed to the development of the contemporary art form of video games, and to lending equal weight to its British Academy Video Games Awards as that given to film and television."

Are these really the right people to judge the awards?

An interesting list, but why aren't games like Half Life 2 Episode One included (at least in the gameplay section) wheras something really new like Lego Star Wars II is?

Also I don't see how Guitar Hero is all that innovative.. its only a tap a jam game linked to a guitar after all.

Black looks like a good choice however, and Dr Kawashima's Brain Training is a good choice as well.

Rockstar Table Tennis rocks but look at the games it has to contend with!

Gameplay - Oblivion A+A - GRAW
Sports - Pro Evo 6 tie with FN3
Best Game - Why is Saints Row not nominated?
Volition or THQ not pay a big enough bribe eh? It came out before Lego starwars2??? WTF
and pro evo 6 isn't even out yet.
This seems like a fake award ceremony to me where only the bigger companies can bid for an award, reminds me of the awful Music Industry.
But BAFTA you can't fool gamers, we are not stupid!

It may not be about the machines the games were released on, but it is sure about the marketing spends and size of publisher more than the games themselves. Just look at the related companies on the right.

I am so happy that LocoRoco is getting the credit it deserves. I wrote a review of that hailing it as the best PSP game and I stant by that. As far as all the other nominations go they all look great, nothing which I wouldn't expect.

yeah, i'd be upset too, if the games I love the most weren't on there, like GTA / Halo / WoW / (insert overrated game here).

But instead, most of them actually deserve the awards they are about to receive. Note that I used the word 'most'....take that into consideration.

Remember, voting is not a high school popularity contest. If it was, then Final Fantasy VII would still be on the top charts, unfortunately.

gavlam69 Here are the rules of entry:

If your title is selected for jury consideration, you will be required to make that game available to the BAFTA jury via any of the following methods:

*Providing the Academy with approximately 10 copies of the game for the jurors to play
*Providing one copy of the game for a closed gaming session for the jurors at the Academy
*Hosting your own secure gaming session for the judges at your own offices

I guess Konami were not in the position to do that with MGS3

Shadow of Colossus should easily win every category it's in. Gameplay should either go to LocoRoco or Guitar Hero, Pro Evo should get sports and best overall game should definitely be Guitar Hero.

It's about time somebody put on a awards show celebrating video gaming that wasn't half-assed. These aren't the games I would personally nominate, but it's definitely something that represents gaming as an art form rather than a toy for grown-ups.
