Sam & Max GameTap-ping October 17

Beloved characters return in first of episodic installments on game-download service next month; available to nonsubscribers November 1.

Just under a year ago, indie studio Telltale Games acquired the rights to make games based on the underground comic Sam & Max: Freelance Police. The news was a godsend to many old-school gamers who loved the first game the comic inspired, 1993's Sam & Max Hit the Road and lamented the 2004 cancellation of its sequel, Sam & Max: Freelance Police.

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo this year, Telltale announced it had partnered with the PC game-distribution service GameTap to copublish a series of episodic adventure games featuring the wacky duo. The deal marked GameTap's first outing as a game publisher.

Today, the two companies announced that Sam & Max Episode 1: Culture Shock, the first installment in the six-part Sam & Max: Season 1, would be available on October 17. The episode will follow the dog and rabbit duo as they "discover that a group of former child stars have become involved in nefarious deeds," according to Telltale.

Sam & Max Episode 1: Culture Shock will premiere on GameTap and be available exclusively to its subscribers until November 1, before being offered on the official Sam & Max Web site for an unnamed fee. The game will only be available via digital distribution.

    I'm very glad to see the ol' Sam and Max humour in full evidence in the above screens. Like Max at a gas station, I just can't wait any longer.

    well it's not childish... the old sam & max: hit the road (back in 1993) is one of the best adventure games ever released, just like day of the tentacle or indiana jones: the fate of atlantic.... i don't know about this one, but that one was very adult, funny and a bit difficult.

    Awesome! Also, Telltale's said there's a definite possibility of a CD (DVD?) version at the end of the season, like you can buy a season of a TV show on DVD.

    @AlbertWesker316
    This was a cartoon on Fox Kids? Did it have fun dialogue like:

    Sam: "So,...where are we and,...who is the scaly-ass, self-propelled, gutter cheese who's gonna' take the long, hard fall for this?"

    Max: "Better figure it out, quick! I got killin' hands!"

    If so, I NEED those DVDs.

    I'm totally excited about this release. The original is a classic. I'm already a Gametap member, so I'm all set for this new episodic adventure. Can't wait!

    BTW, for those non-Gametap members, the game will be released on November 1 on Telltale's website.

    Personally I'd very very much prefer to have this on steam so I know I have it for life even after formatting my harddrive but this is still great news.

    Most people who use digital downloads will probally pick this up. A win for the pc gaming world.

    edit: Why won't someone remake maniac mansion already. That game was awesome and it calls for a 3d remake.
