Capcom taps top THQ exec

Germaine Gioia will lead licensing efforts at Capcom; will be based at publisher's Los Angeles office.

THQ is a game publisher that has built much of its reputation on games based on licenses. Powerful brands that include WWE wrestling, movies such as The Incredibles, Cars, Finding Nemo, and The Polar Express, as well as cartoons such as Power Rangers, SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, and Scooby-Doo!, have at one time or another been fodder for games from the publisher.

Tomorrow, Capcom will announce it has hired the individual responsible for those and other licensing deals to manage its own nascent licensing division. Germaine Gioia, formerly THQ's vice president of licensing, will take on the role of senior vice president of licensing, a new position at Capcom. She will report to Capcom USA senior vice president Mark Beaumont and will work out of Capcom's Los Angeles office, where she started work yesterday.

Gioia leaves THQ after more than 13 years at the company. Her agenda at Capcom will be to elevate Capcom's global presence "to attract the right properties to expand business in North America and Europe," according to the company.

In a statement, Beaumont said Gioia "brings a wealth of talent and a history of success to Capcom and is well qualified to support our growth plans. Her TV, film, and other industry relationships in conjunction with Capcom's reputation for quality development will give us a seat at the table for any potential license, maximizing our ability to bring high quality entertainment content to all our consumers. She is an incredibly valuable and welcome addition to our growing management team."

Capcom has made awesome games for so long...and they just get better and better. Now they are going after big licenses. Could this mean we will see movie games that don't suck? Look out EA.

Considering Capcom s quality, apparently in the next generation we will at last see good licensed movie&other games.
Not really thrilled, I always prefer original IP to licenses of course and capcom has enough IP but they need to expand to movie freaks and more casual gamers too.Maybe in the next-gen we will at last see more movie&other licensed games worth their sale numbers.

Thats good. I like Capcom way better than crappy THQ. The only good THQ game i have played is Banjo Kazooie: GR for GBA while i have played lots of fun Capcom stuff.

This is bad news. Most licensed games are poor. They bring in money but they arn't usually good games. This means that Capcom will have to pay out for licenses instead of making original IPs. This means development costs for them will go up. Besides Capcom makes great original games. I hope this doesn't hurt the quality of their titles. In the past they did well with Disney but if it means less games like RE SF and Lost Planet I'm gonna be bummed. They used to have people paying them for their ideas (RE) now they are going to pay others for theirs. Ihope things work out for the best but this could really be bad. And they just got their own stamp too.
