Poker, pigskin help rack up Xbox Live numbers

Microsoft releases new stats for online service usage; temporarily free card game sets one-day record for downloads while latest Madden has already seen 2 million hours logged online.

In mid-May, Microsoft reported that Xbox Live Marketplace downloads had surpassed the 24 million mark, with more than one-fifth of those coming over the course of the previous week's Electronic Entertainment Expo. Since that announcement, the Marketplace has welcomed demos for Prey, Dead Rising, Saints Row, Ninety-Nine Nights, Rockstar Games Table Tennis, Just Cause, and Hitman: Blood Money, and Microsoft has launched the Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays program.

Today Microsoft announced the results of those efforts, since the Xbox Live Marketplace has now passed the 50 million download milestone. The publisher says gamers have spent 2 billion hours connected to Live since it launched for the original Xbox in November of 2002. More than 60 percent of Xbox 360 owners are connected to the service, with 65 percent of those (39 percent of all owners) having downloaded Live Arcade titles. Live Arcade titles collectively have been downloaded more than 8 million times since the Xbox 360 launched, according to Microsoft, and the company has sold more than 2 billion Marketplace points in the same span.

One of the most anticipated downloadable games and a featured game of the XBLA Wednesdays program was the hotly anticipated Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting, which Capcom recently hailed as the fastest-selling Xbox Live Arcade title ever. Depending on how one looks at it, the arcade brawler has lost that crown. Microsoft has said that Texas Hold 'Em Poker managed 100 downloads per minute for its first 24 hours online (which works out to 144,000 in all), a one-day record on the Xbox Live service for any downloadable item. Texas Hold 'Em was available as a free download in its first 48 hours online.

It has been a busy month for Live--the release of Madden NFL 07 for the Xbox and Xbox 360 (among a plethora of other systems) earlier this month spiked numbers on the service. Microsoft said its online service hosted 2 million hours of online play--or enough Madden to fill up 228 years' worth of spare time--in the game's first week of release.

That's 25 MILLION dollars from marketplace points alone. Anyone who believes MS is losing any money on the price of the 360 is a fool. It's going to take Sony YEARS to reap back there investment costs for the PS3, and MS will have it buy mid year '07, LOL! "

Yes and no. Think about it this way--$25mil points--and 5mil consoles sold. That is only $5/console. Plus, they have to share that money with other people (remember--they use points to buy games, add-ons, etc. where some of that money goes to Capcom, etc.).

And think about this--the numbers don't quite add up. $25mil from points--but $32mil from Arcade titles. Add in the add-ons (extra cars, maps, etc.) and it is even more. So somehow the numbers aren't adding up.

HOWEVER--that is $5 per console--in about 10 months. (less really since they didn't have 5mil consoles out until July. Many of those consoles have only been in people's hands 3 or so months. So just give a wild a$$ guess of an average of $10/console/year. They will likely have 20mil consoles by end of 2007. So that is $200/year in 2008. That really starts to add up.

Plus say they have 10% paying for Live Gold Premium (Or whatever it is called)--2mil*$60=$120mil. So that would be total of over $300mil. That certainly helps their bottom line.

Texas Hold'Em should be free as the only thing worse than the Ai is the people on line.
And Madden, those numbers seem a little weak to me if you look at the big picture; ie sales VS online hours. EA servers really need to catch-up as they are horrid. Maybe they should talk to SEGA."

then dload it and play it online. since you know...the rest of the world cant compete against your amazing pokers skills. we've all seen the movie so don't think you are special because you have too

i take it that MS yearly fee is distributed to third party developers in order for them to maintain and keep running game servers etc? i also imagine that it goes someway to providing space for all the free demos to be hosted and whatnot? it also means that most games aside from mmorpgs will not need you to pay any more subscription fees? microsoft have been connecting PC's together for decades, connecting consoles together for 5 years, and we pay for a well managed, cleanly structured, well maintained gaming service.

we get what we pay for, from the networking experts. 80 bucks a year, 6 bucks a month, 20 cents a day. wow thats some bank breaking crap right there.

i seem to recall nearly all of sony online entertainments IP's having connection issues and poor service and basically flopping hard, save final fantasy, which is turn based combat, and anyone can get that right as they dont have to worry about lag. now someone please explain why sony's free service is going to come out of the blue and steal away MS crown? i must be a bit on the stupid side, cause i just cant see it.

XBL is a well done beast and more importantly, a continually improving beast.

And if MS does add in the ability to move and copy all Non-Game data from your 360 to any home networked PC running XP, MCE or Vista in the next update I will be even happier

Love me some poker and I agree MSis iles ahead of Sony in the online dept. Anyone wanting to disagree is just foolish. Look at how MS has tweeked live over the years. I have been a live member for almost 5 years. Have seen many changes and truly enjoy it. Also, networking is MS's forte, not Sonys.

Anyone feel like bringing up the Playstation Network now? I have to laugh that PS3 fanboys think that Xbox Live is a gimmick. $50 a year for Live Gold is nothing to play all the games I own online. It's also nice that all those downloads are completely free for Xbox Live Silver Members as well.
