Burnout goes for a fifth lap

Electronic Arts confirms development of next edition of wreck-happy racer is under way for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360.

Electronic Arts isn't letting up on the gas of one of its premier racing franchises. The publisher today confirmed that Burnout 5 is currently in development and will be released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2007.

The decision to make a new version of the franchise was a no-brainer for the company; since EA took over the Burnout license from Acclaim, it has been one of the highest-rated racing series on the market.

Given Burnout's past success, developer Criterion isn't straying too far from the core of the winning formula. Gamers will once again buckle up and speed through the streets of Paradise City, with little concern to how their reckless driving will affect their insurance premiums.

However, Criterion is taking a U-turn on the series' user interface. Burnout 5 will apparently take an open-world approach, with menus eliminated and "every inch of the world" an opportunity to create massive fender benders. As if inspired by the legendary Enzo Ferrari/Gizmondo exec escapade, cars in Burnout 5 will also be able to be torn in half.

Burnout 5 has not yet been rated or priced.

You got to be kidding? Traffic checking was the mutts!!! Give me as much chance to destroy at high spped as possible - just think, multi-lane highway with hundreds of cars to check and be checked by!! I can almost see those baby-on-board signs flying now!

I swear, if I see one more "WII WANT BURNOUT" joke on any board, I'm gonna go crazy. Seriously. It ain't clever or funny, just annoying and obnoxious. Nintendo fanboys, please shut up. Is it supposed to be cool? Go whine about "no 3rd party support" somewhere else. I don't mean to be an ass, but that's how I feel, and I've seen so many of those "WII are the future"-esque jokes that I've been driven to say this. Please. Shut. Up.

Yeah, I hated not having the option to turn off the traffic checking in certain modes...and the whole new "Crash Meter" was stupid...leave that in the sports titles and keep Burnout like the series deserves...enhancements are nice but get the game played and tested for the "Burnout Fun Factor" too!!

Hm...as long as it gets rid f that dumb Traffic-checking thing in Burnout Revenge... Ok, maybe it wasn't THAT dumb, but Burnout 3 was alot more intense without it. Everything else in Revenge was better though.

Firstly, GT is currently the best driving simulator (minus the crashes)
burnout is the most easily accesible and enjoyable racing game and is the best arcade racer...
Second EA releasing sequels year after year? when did this start happening lol....

GT is a fake driving simulator it has no damage externaly or internally the gtr games have external damage tire ware, engine wear, yeah if you drive bad youll crap out your transmition, the GT games haven't inovated in half a decade. sony has just been pumping visually impressive remakes of older games, for the last two generations GTA was the closest thing to inovative game they'd ever had, but that game was just a 3d version of the 2d game, i hate when game designers add two features and a facelift and release a game. and charge 50-60 dollars for it. i want half-life 2 innovation. and with that episodic content it costs less, like 20. oh yeah and the burnout games are quite fun.
