UK game charts: August 20-26

Summer stagnation continues with no change in the top six; slow start for Ninety-Nine Nights.
By Phil Elliott, GameSpot UK
Posted Aug 30, 2006 5:39 am PT

There was very little change in the UK all-formats release chart last week, with the top six staying exactly as they were. That means that Cars remains top of the pile, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is second, and New Super Mario Bros. is third for the fifth consecutive week.

This lack of activity points to a generally slow summer in terms of high-profile title releases, although this should change in the coming weeks as new games creep onto the shelves--Saints Row (Xbox 360), Gangs of London (PlayStation Portable), and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas (Xbox, PlayStation 2) are all out this week.

The Sims 2, Pro Evolution Soccer 5, and Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training stay in fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively, while Animal Crossing: Wild World and Star Wars: Battlefront II both move up two places to seventh and ninth.

New releases Ninety-Nine Nights and Reservoir Dogs made relatively slow starts, coming in at number eight and number 14, with the next highest new entry being Madden NFL 07 at number 37. Need for Speed Most Wanted rounded off the top 10, having dropped three places from the previous week.

The only reason cars is number 1 is that its multi format and availble on everything, hell i wouldnt have been suprised if it was on the snes too. GTA:LS is more down to the ps2 than the psp, for weeks the psp version was out of the top ten till the ps2 version came along and knocked it to the top.

It still amazes me (and raises my mood) at how well the DS is still doing. Bring on Lego Star Wars!

It's not just about no games, it's about no good games, and pc games are not selling because of just FPS games, and Fantasy rpgs only. Just two genres to support a whole market - imagine consoles doing that - just platform and fighting games, say. Wouldn't you agree that would hurt console game sales?!

Go Sims!!! Even two years after its release!

Cars will stay in the charts until the next animated Disney film comes out...or when they stop doing the characters in Happy Meals. Its only been in the chart for 2 months to be fair. Kudos to all the games who've lasted more than a year!

and another thing, there are too many people here in the UK that will buy anything thats related to the movie. Im doing my part and staying away from tehm games so they dont bring garbage like that but unfortunatly not many others do...for example, i prevented my friend from getting fifa street 2 for the DS because its rubbish! he desperatly wanted it but i kept on saying no, no, no and showed him gamespots review and he still wanted it. I kept reassuring him that its garbage until he finally gave up.

iv always been ashamed to live in casual land (UK). Even if a good game gets released, these casuals will go for their football crap any day of the week. No matter how much you try and persuade them, they wont listen

at the end of the day this chart is BS, 360 not popular here? thats why it sold out and 360 games are everywhere in shops, plus the fact their are about a hundred different UK sales charts in every shop and on the internet and they all say different things.

we brits do have bad taste as too many chavs own consoles.

I did say that but that was because i was giving an example of how mainly the Americans are when they see the charts they generalize that we have bad taste yet they know nothing about our industry. Im sorry if it offended you but i was only giving an example and i edited because i didn't word the best and you took it the wrong way.
The UK industry is probably made up of over 85% casuals and we have had a terrible summer with not 1 good game coming out for months where as in America you have had Dead Rising we are still waiting for it in fact Saints Row comes out a week before it for some reason. Im quite surprised any 360 game is on the chart because it is not doing well over here unless they count games being bundled with console because a few shops have it bundled.

To shasam712:

He edited his post. Before he did, he said we had 7 madden games on our US charts. That was the best buy charts, not the NPD. So yes, he doesnt know what he's talking about.

Plus he removed his comment about generalizing the US as buying anything with Madden on the cover.

To Singletrac: I don't think you can say that us British buy anything with a football on it when over in the US Madden sells millions of copies every year.

Also, fordies said he knew the UK industry and he is lives in the UK, he never said anythin about knowing about the US markets.

To fordies:

You shouldn't be talking about "knowing" other countries game industry. For starters, the BEST BUY charts gamespot puts up are only sales from BEST BUY stores. They shouldn't even be posting those since they mislead people into thinking those are total US sales. The NPD Charts are the official sales chart for the US, and even that's not reliable because they only count sales revenue, not copies sold. Plus they only track two-thirds of the nations video games sales.

And since you're on generalizations, the UK buys up anything with a soccer ball on the cover.

Reetesh 'Majority of the games were realised LAST year!! It seems no UK people are interested in new things,,, ' Thats because very few good games have been released here for months and the good games on the 360 wont make it on there because it is having very poor sales.

HAHA.......i live in italy and i must admit that the 60 % are playstation fans , but they are ignorant ps fans because if u ask them why they bought one thay answer , because it playstation and everyone buy one. BUT Fortunatly im not one of them (my family too) Wii are all nintendo fans so i spend my money for a Wii.

i hope N3 flops, wasted potential

reason why 360 isnt performing well over here is the lack of variety in the games, too many racers and shooters doesnt sell a console at all..... wheres the platformers, fighters (DOA4 isnt enough) & action adventure games?

nvm...people over here in england are waiting for the PS3 anyways despite the high price, alot of electronic stores are already hyping up blu ray
