Capcom updates XBLA Street Fighter II

Patch fixes "connection and time out issues;" Leaderboards cleared due to instances of cheating.

The highly anticipated arrival of Capcom's Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting on Xbox Live Arcade was quickly followed by a wave of player complaints. Two of the frequently brought-up problems were lag when playing online, and a record-keeping system that didn't punish unscrupulous players for disconnecting from matches when it appeared they were about to be defeated.

It appears Capcom has tried to address those two issues, as there is a new auto-update available to patch the game. Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb posted the following note about what exactly the update does on his blog, Major Nelson:

The title update will address connection and time out issues that have been reported by players. In addition, the Leaderboards will be cleared in order to offset players that have cheated by causing intentional disconnections.

[UPDATE] Capcom has told GameSpot that the "connection issues" addressed by the patch have nothing to do with lag. "This patch actually relates to connection issues which stem from players being disconnected in Quarter Match or not being able to connect to matches due to timeouts and whatnot," a representative of the publisher said. "Regarding latency, SFII is dependant on a low latency environment as players' controller inputs must be synchoronized on both consoles. Thus the gameplay experience is greatly related to a player's Internet connection."

NzTauranga: I played SF2 online and spent 3months straight to lower my rank to the top10 xbox live, but because Im playing from New Zealand our broadband is average and terrible for U.S and U.K online play. Well I beat the top no.1 player him Sagat and me Zangief. But because of my lagg, I was voted as cheating to lower my rank and no thank to Xboxlive my rank was reseted from top10 to 4000. After this I sold my xbox360 until our broadband is faster, then I'll go PS3- upset player

I must honestly say, I find online play dull. Be it WOW or a game of Team Fortress, I've never had as much fun as I've had playing Goldeneye, Super Mario Kart, any of the Nintendo branded WWE games, Mario Party, etc. If I'm playing multiplay with my buddies and they start cheating or endlessly trash-talking, I can pop them in the skull (and vice-versa).

Oh, and it's sad to see that the PC Dev mentality has infected the console market. "Hurry up and get it in the store, we can just fix it later."

Larry Hryb's blog has a quite weird name...

Talking about that, remember when Jeff was angry on that guy who disconnected while playing with him?

This is great news, and I am glad Capcom and MS are listening to gamer concerns. It'd be great if they released another patch to fix the difficulty settings and tweak a couple of the sound effects that are off. Then the game would be perfect!

No, you don't re-review games as the point of a review is to tell you what the shipped product is like."

So a re-review would make sense in this case. IT's not shipped it's downloaded. So everyone who downloads it now will get the patched version since you can't play it without the patch.

I feel sorry for the guys that actually played fair and made it to the top of the leaderboards. Now they'll have to do it all over again. Good job ruining it for everyone, cheaters!

It should turn off the disconnect when starting a fight so you can't log off when your on the verge of defeat. They should of knew this would happen as soon as it was released. Or at least add to your profile a DISCONNECTED counter to log how many times you've D/C then people can look at it and say LOOOOOSER for running instead of accepting defeat.

  • smbius

    Posted Aug 29, 2006 12:56 am PT

IT'S ABOUT PHREAKIN TIME. I remember beating Rank #15 out of 60,000 ...and when the round ended...he'd just disconnect. All of a sudden his streak of 295 wins was intact.
