Euro PS2 gets pretty in pink
New system colour to debut at Leipzig Games Convention; Sony cuts the price of PS2 throughout the continent.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced the latest member of the PlayStation family on Monday--a limited edition slimline PlayStation 2 in pink.
The new console is set to hit store shelves on November 8, and will only be available from retail outlets in Europe. The new console will be shown off for the first time at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, later this week.
The console will come with two matching pink analog controllers and a pink 8MB memory card.
SCEE said that "the decision to produce a pink console reflects the growing and diverse demographic that PlayStation 2 has developed." SCEE credited franchises such as Buzz!, SingStar, and other "socially interactive" titles for these demographic changes.
This isn't the first time that Sony has released a new colour to try and inject life into its 6-year-old console. The slimline version has been available in both silver and white--as well as the original black--while the original version was released, in various different territories, in Aqua Blue, Midnight Blue, gold, light yellow, silver, Ocean Blue and Zen Black--both of which were translucent--Sakura Pink, Snow White, and Super Red.
In other PS2 news, Sony has just cut the price of the standard slimline PS2 to 129 euros (roughly $170) in the eurozone and £94.99 (around $180) in the UK. Memory card prices have been cut, too--the standard 8MB card will now retail for 19.99 euros (around $26).
