Retail Radar: Devil May compile, Xbox 360 gets a retro stick

Listings appear for a PS2 greatest-hits set for Capcom's stylish action franchise and a premium-priced arcade stick for Microsoft's latest console.

There have already been several sightings on the Retail Radar this week, but a few more notable new products have appeared on the GameStop Web site.

First, the site now says that Capcom will release a Devil May Cry Greatest Hits Set for the PlayStation 2. There are no details given on the site as to what would be included in the $39.99 package, but any such compilation would be likely to include the first two Devil May Cry games and the Dante's Awakening special edition of Devil May Cry 3. GameStop expects the set to ship on October 24.

The retailer also has a listing for a new Xbox 360 "Live Arcade Retro Stick" from Mad Catz. While the retro games on Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service are notable for their inexpensive nature (typically $5 to download classics like Joust or Smash TV to the system), Mad Catz' upcoming arcade stick appears to be anything but.

The product listing is devoid of details outside of the $69.99 price, but it does include a tiny picture from which a few things can be discerned. While the diagram in the picture is a bit too blurry to make out clearly, it appears that one of the controller's dual analog sticks has a removable, retro-styled stick attachment. Furthermore, there seems to be a few logos suggesting that the pack will come with 100 Microsoft Points to spend in the Marketplace, a free month's subscription to Xbox Live Gold, and three of something entirely illegible (possibly free retro games?).

Finally, after an unexplained monthlong stint selling the 1600 Microsoft Marketplace Points cards for $5 above the suggested retail price, GameStop has dropped the cards back down to $19.99.

Please note, while retailer listings frequently jump the gun on publishers' product announcements, they should not be taken as final confirmation of a game's existence, nor should the absence of a listing be considered as proof that a game isn't coming to a given platform.

I like the last paragraph discussing Gamestop selling something $5 over retail as being "unexplained." I can explain it. They're greedy bastards! It's called capitalism, has anyone at Gamespot heard of that?

$69.99 for a Mad Catz product? Wow. Just because it's Mad Catz, I'd only pay $19.99 for it. Why won't Microsoft make one of these?

I could care less about the stick...they should have given that to the PS2...and given the Xbox the Devil May compile.

Damn. And I bought all 3 Devil May Cry. Usually, the Greatest Hits versions have extras included or some glitches/bugs fixed (extra ending for Silent Hill 2 Greatest Hits, extra playable character in Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition Greatest Hits). That's why now I'm waiting for the Greatest Hits of major games. Pretty sure there'll be something for the Greatest Hits version of Resident Evil 4, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, or Kingdom Hearts II.

Read it before you post, Generic_Dude. It's not made by Microsoft. It's made by Mat Catz....Ugg...sometimes I wish they would take off comments for news story.

OMG! Does no one read the article!?!?!?
Ok, one! Microsoft is not making the retro stick! Mad Catz is!
Ok, two! The joy stick for the retro games in the XBLA not for other Xbox 360 games!
And last but not least! If you don't like it, DON'T BUY IT!

what good is that arcade stick gonna do for SF and KoF games? the stick loos well enough, but you need bigger buttons to get that real arcade feel. and maybe less lag would help, as well, but that's out of MadCatz's hands...

    69.99 USD? that's too much....

But then I'm also a person who spent 70 USD on a contoller that only works with one series of game (Beatmania) and is likely to buy a 300 USD full metal, near-arcade-quality DDR pad...

70 dollars for the retro joystick thats crazy

  • cybergooch

    Posted Aug 17, 2006 3:54 pm GMT

Is it just me, or is the page "mysteriously" gone with the retro stick on it? And, um, I think the stick is going to be good for more than just King of Fighters. How 'bout MK, SF, Galaga, and Gauntlet? And there are some lamer retros in there (Joust, Robotron, PacMan, etc) that would work well with the stick. And for all of you that think that $69 is a lot for a controller, think STEEL BATALLION...and that small appliance ONLY worked for one game!

  • rhsu

    Posted Aug 17, 2006 3:53 pm GMT

It's pretty much by the two Devil May Cry games that were good for regular price and get the reminder of how to screw up a series for free.

Generic_Dude, just breathe and calm down. No one is forcing you to buy it. Once those things stay on the shelves for a year or two without selling, the price will drop or they will be discontinued. No reason to get all bent out of shape over it.

"the Dante's Awakening special edition of Devil May Cry 3."

Wasn't Dante's Awakening the subtitle to DMC3 and not just tacked on as part of the special edition? Oh, GS, you and your videogame titles.

Also, that controller won't be used for anything other than a KoF game on the 360. I mean, c'mon.

  • Generic_Dude

    Posted Aug 17, 2006 2:18 pm GMT

$70!? For something that is going to be useless of rmost of the 360 games. Can you imagine playing COD2 or Dead Rising with that monstrosity? Oh, but wait... it's for the XBL Arcade games, right? I'll just pay $70 for a controller for a $5 game from 19-fricking-80. PSHAW. And what am I going to buy with 100 Marketplace Points? A picture pack? Give me a break. A free month of XBL Gold? I'm already a subscriber, so what so I get? You tacking on an extra month to my year's subscription? Unlikely. I can just picture the directions on the joystick's box now...

    1) Unpack joystick.
    2) Attach retro-style stick attachment.
    3) Pull down pants.
    4) Be seated.

No thanks, M$. No thanks at all.

bubnux, the original xbox controller wasn't really that bad unless your hands aren't fully grown yet.

$70 is a complete joke, though. Looking at the picture, the controllers are just all crammed on there and when you imagine it with that layout, the controller doesn't even seem comfortable. Why not offer a simple 1 or 2 button joystick for $20 max as a peripheral. This controller is going to bomb, and that is a shame because I enjoy XBLA.
