Sega dusting off 'vintage brand' for PSP

Publisher enlists Infected developer Planet Moon to breathe new life into an unnamed old franchise.

Sega has one of the most recognizable names in the industry and a library of famous franchises that include Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, After Burner, Altered Beast, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and dozens more. A number of those games will be included in the recently announced Sega Genesis Collection later this year, but the venerable publisher isn't stopping at merely reproducing some of its classics; it's looking to revitalize them as well.

Sega today announced that it has enlisted San Francisco-based developer Planet Moon to bring one of its "vintage brands" back to life in a new game for the PlayStation Portable. It will be the developer's first time working with an established intellectual property. It has previously produced Infected for the PSP, Giants: Citizen Kabuto for the PC, and Armed & Dangerous for the Xbox and PC.

Planet Moon isn't the only developer bringing an old Sega franchise to the PSP. Totally Games, developer of the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series of PC space combat flight sims, is currently working on an action game based on one of the publisher's IPs. While the developer has a lengthy track record with flight sims, it is promising "something new" for its fans. Also, at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sega announced that it was enlisting its recently acquired studio Secret Level to handle the upcoming Golden Axe revamp on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

    God, HOW amazing does the main character look? I remember golden axe on the sega (was it the first, I don't know) when you'd get those three game cartridges with the console itself-oh the memories!! I would love to see streets of rage too!!

    I hope that it is Shinobi, with like Ninja Gaiden style, but with better camera work. That would be awesome.

    Way to go Sega ! You chose the right console to make games for ! As a owner of both the DS lite and the PSP, I can say that the DS lite is way over hyped. The only thing going for it is it's own Mario Franchise ! PSP is the future ! Go PSP !

    Sonic obviously won't be, with Sonic rush coming soon and Sonic for next-gen.
    Ah, Shining Force, Phantasy Star... good old rpg's... IMO the PSP needs this kind of rpg's, while the fabled PSX emulation cappabilities are nowhere in sight.
    Not to mention Panzer Dragoon, although I think that for the psp it's controls would suck.

    It's kind of interesting that, Sega is going to be putting their classics on the PSP, as well as the Nintendo Wii. I guess if Sony really wanted to, they could have a similiar service for the PS3... old Sega games, as well as PSX games.

    ...and ignorance abounds. I am amazed at how many people don't know what games were actually made by Sega. I am also amazed that people have forgotten what games probably no longer qualify as "vintage brands" since a lot of IPs have had a game made in this generation. Afterburner, Vectorman Wonder Boy and Streets of Rage are all good guesses. (But I really want another Joe Mondana Football. Yeah right.) Another Moonwalker would just be in bad taste but I bet the rights would be cheap.

    whats with all of the psp bashing? that thing not only has plenty of great games that are at a ps2 level, it also works as an mp3 player, a high resoloution picture viewer, a movie player, an internet browser etc...

    not to mention the firmware updates that expand its capabilities. in the works are a GPS navigation add on, a camera attachmentment, and it could eventually be used as a universal remote. the hardware on that thing is more then worth its price. calling the psp another game system is like calling a ferrari just another car.

    um....you gotta be kidding me, right? what handheld fighting game just scored 9.2 here at GS in the last month or so? before that, there was valkyrie/daxter/fieldcommander/syphon/megaman/mlb06/etc etc etc........so please give this "NO GUD PSP GAMEZZ" fud a rest, k?

    It will be neat to see what Planet Moon can do for the PSP. I for one can't wait to see Golden Axe on either the 360 or PS3 that should be a good game. I would love to see how a Streets of Rage game would work on the PSP. I would love to see it be a Streets of Rage game that comes with all the old ones and maybe a new Streets of Rage added to it too. I would pay thirty for that would not be a bad price at all. Plus if they through in the game share feature and Internet play it would really be awesome.

    The first thought I had when I saw this headline: Ristar 2.
    The second thought: New Vectorman.
    My third: Those Phantasy Star remakes that were supposedly being made will FINALLY get finished/released/something!

    Pablo620 Sonic Rush came out last year for the DS. Wild Fire will control in more of a 2D fashion, and I think the PSP Sonic does something similar to that.

    I'd love for them to resurrect SoR; but if its Planet Moon, its probably going to be a game with shooting and a weird sense of humor, seeing as they've only done games like that. So it might be an update of Vectorman; even though there was a Vectorman remake announced awhile ago. It was canceled. But, since we're talking about pipedreams, Kid Chameleon and Comix Zone would make a good surprise.

    Next-gen Vectorman would be pretty dope. Consider the character, the visual style of the 2D games. The translation to 3D would probably be awesome.

    oh how was it like? "PSP is a FLOP!" PSP haters (including the most Ninty fanboys)! Just look at the Numbers! It sells excellently (not as good as the DS of course) and it has a great 3rd party support! I am glad to say that I am an owner of the sexiest Handheld ever made! And oh wow good news! Streets of Rage and Alex Kidd FTW!!
